Darius's POV
Consciousness crept back slowly, dragging me from the depths of darkness. The fluorescent lights above stabbed at my vision like daggers. Everything hurt, especially the burning sensation radiating from my chest.
My skull felt like it had been split open with an axe. Every muscle in my body screamed in protest as I tried to move. The mattress beneath me might as well have been quicksand, pulling me down with relentless force. The air tasted clinical and sharp, confirming what I already suspected.
I was in some kind of hospital.
My hand moved instinctively to my chest, fingers finding the source of the agony. The memory crashed over me like a tidal wave. One of Grant's bastards had put a bullet in me during the raid. The son of a bitch had gotten lucky with his shot.
