This was the moment she should have used to question him, to demand answers, to let her fear show instead of swallowing it whole. Yet here was Evangeline, confessing a flaw of her own instead, as though baring herself might somehow make him less frightening.

Hades, curious now, stayed silent. He let her speak, only to be caught off guard by the direction she chose. For the very first time in his life he didn't know how to react which was funny as he always knew what to do, never once losing sight on his own action. 

It was quite beguiling how such a small creature could just surprise him every single second. 

"I asked once… why my parents didn't like me," she said quietly. "In the prison.. before we departed. They told me it was because I was born with a flaw. How my father's family was cursed, and some of them were born with scales. That flaw made my mother hate me, and apparently… she destroyed it."

"I see," he replied, measured as ever. "Then why are you telling me this?"
