As he hurried downstairs, he saw Quirrell stumbling towards the restaurant. Quirrell ran up the stairs leading to the basement and disappeared around the corner at lightning speed, seemingly oblivious to Maca on the second-floor stairs.
"Salute to the spirit of the Best Actor." As he ran, Maka straightened his back and saluted, his feet never stopping, and soon he reached the basement corridor.
As soon as he arrived, he smelled a mixture of stench from two-month-old unwashed socks and a stale, old toilet.
"This flavor, mixed with the pumpkin smell that fills the castle, is really awful."
Maca looked up and saw the giant in the corridor, but the creature didn't seem to notice him.
"It collapsed!" Maca drew his wand and smacked it.
"Bang!"
The troll collapsed instantly, which surprised Maca for a moment—he remembered reading in the book that trolls had pretty good magic resistance, so how could it have fainted like that?
Just as Maca was pondering this, the giant struggled to its feet once more. It seemed Maca remembered correctly; this thing's magic-resistant skin was indeed a major characteristic inherited from giants.
Next, Maca witnessed the troll's second major characteristic—it wasn't very bright.
It looked around, but perhaps because the basement corridor was too dark, it hadn't spotted the enemy attacking it. Instead, as if it had heard something, it used its monstrous strength to force its way through the doorway next to it.
Immediately, Maka heard a shrill, terrified scream.
"His IQ is even lower than I imagined. It seems that the book 'Monsters and Their Origins' needs to be revised. The statements in it are too vague." Maca ran towards the place with a lot of complaints.
Hermione!
Upon reaching the door, Maca immediately spotted Hermione huddled under the sink, trembling as she stared at the angry troll!
The troll clearly hadn't noticed the person behind it; it was striding towards Hermione, its massive club almost striking her. The situation was obviously extremely dangerous, and levitation spells were clearly too late.
"Sandstorm!" In a hurry, Maca barely managed to aim at the wooden stick in its hand and cast a spell that could blow things away.
The large wooden club slipped from the troll's hand, almost grazing Hermione's hair as it flew past, bounced against the corner of the wall, and landed in the toilet stall, knocking down a large section of the partition.
"Crushed to pieces!"
While the troll was still stunned by the club slipping from its grasp, Maka aimed at the back of the troll's neck and delivered a powerful blow with all her might.
With a loud "bang," a bowl-sized gash appeared on the back of the giant's neck, filled with blood and gore, and the shattered cervical vertebrae could be vaguely seen.
The giant's enormous body swayed, then crashed to the ground, its body even twitching a few times.
"Phew—" Maca breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing this. "If it had hit somewhere else, it would probably have just lost a piece of flesh. No wonder this big guy is known for its thick skin and tough flesh!"
"Ugh... Maca!" Hermione looked terrified and immediately threw herself into Maca's arms.
He savored the beauty of Xiangyu's embrace, but in his mind he was thinking, "What grade was this little girl in when she started developing?"
"Cough cough, it's alright, it's all over now." Feeling the girl in his arms trembling, he had to temporarily suppress his wild thoughts and comfort her.
To be honest, Maca didn't have any special feelings for this know-it-all girl, even after she grew up. But who could resist a heroine who actively throws herself at them? Although there were reasons for this, it still made Maca a little giddy.
To calm her agitated state, Maka began to mutter something under her breath, and one could vaguely hear inexplicable words such as "three years" and "death penalty."
Suddenly, a loud footstep sounded, and the two people embracing looked up. Hermione was startled for a moment, then quickly pushed Maca's chest away as much as possible.
Clearly, the commotion earlier had been too loud; the violent collision and the giant's roar had attracted someone's attention.
"Hermione!" "Maca?"
Ron and Harry arrived, looking around in surprise, not noticing Hermione's flushed face.
Before they could say anything else, Professor McGonagall rushed into the bathroom, followed closely by Snape, with Quirrell bringing up the rear. Quirrell glanced at the troll before letting out a weak sob, sitting on a toilet seat, clutching his chest tightly.
Snape went over to look at the troll. Professor McGonagall, meanwhile, looked at the group of people present; her lips were pale, and her eyes were wide open, clearly indicating that she was quite angry.
"What kind of tricks are you playing?" Professor McGonagall said, her voice filled with cold anger.
Harry and Ron glanced at Maca, who was still standing there, wand in hand.
"Consider yourselves lucky you didn't get killed by it! Why didn't you stay in your dorms?" Professor McGonagall shouted. Maca thought to himself that she was indeed the Head of Gryffindor; when she got angry, she was just like the lion on the house crest.
"Oh…" "Please don't, Professor McGonagall… He's looking for me."
Maca was about to speak when Hermione interrupted him.
"Miss Granger!" Professor McGonagall said with some surprise. In her memory, Hermione Granger was an extremely well-behaved student who strictly followed the school rules.
Hermione finally managed to stand up, her knees trembling.
"I came to find the troll because I… I thought I could handle it on my own—you know, because I've read about them in books and know a lot about them."
"Oh, Hermione, you don't have to do that." Maca shook his head; he had already gotten up.
"Professor, I heard on my way to the restaurant that Miss Granger is in the restroom," Maca explained. "She's been having some trouble and isn't in a good mood, so she's been staying here instead of going to the restaurant."
"I only came to comfort her, you know, she's my friend." Maca shrugged, his face full of innocence. "But who knew a troll would be running rampant in Hogwarts?"
"I think this should be investigated." Maca gave Rocky a meaningful look, but Rocky was covering his face and sobbing loudly, continuing his Oscar-worthy performance!
"Oh—if that's the case…" Professor McGonagall gazed at them and murmured.
"Mr. McLean, you used the Shattering Charm to shatter the troll's neck, didn't you?" Snape glanced coldly at Harry, then looked at Maca.
Maca immediately sensed something was wrong, but on the surface, she nodded without changing her expression.
I think so.
"Hmph, not bad power, but can you explain where you learned it?" Snape stared at Maca with a grim expression. "I imagine there aren't any 'curse' spells in first-year textbooks, are there?"
Professor McGonagall glanced back at the troll's wound, from which blood was still gushing out!
"…I taught myself." Maca had no choice but to tell the truth.
The situation was too urgent, and he didn't have time to think much; he just subconsciously picked a suitable spell. Now that things have come to this, he can only be thankful that he's far from mastering the Unforgivable Curse! Otherwise, if he had carelessly flung a green light at it, he probably would have ended up in Azkaban dealing with Dementors.
"My God! You should know you're only in first grade!"
Professor McGonagall seemed to only come to her senses at this moment. She rushed over and examined Maca from all angles, seemingly more concerned about her student's physical condition than the incantation.
"...Maca."
Hermione looked at Maca with concern; she was very familiar with the classification of spells. Spells in the "Curse" category were all Dark Magic, requiring intense negative emotions to be successfully cast. Even the three Unforgivable Curses belonged to this category!
However, unlike other "curses," the Unforgivable Curse is "unforgivable" precisely because there are no corresponding counters to the Killing Curse and the Cruciatus Curse; while the Imperius Curse is due to its highly disruptive magical characteristics—it can completely control a person's mind and body.
"It's alright, it's just a little exhaustion—I mean, Mr. McLean, you must provide a reasonable explanation for your actions!" Professor McGonagall seemed relieved, but immediately put on a stern face after realizing something was amiss.
"Uh, I think I might be moving a little too fast—I mean, I really enjoy learning, and…" Maca glanced at Hermione deliberately, "I hope I can protect the people I want to protect."
Hermione blushed again upon hearing this, while Harry and Ron, standing beside Professor McGonagall, showed no reaction. It seems there's some truth to the saying that girls tend to mature earlier than boys.
Professor McGonagall looked at Maca, and the corners of her mouth couldn't help but curl upwards. In her opinion, Maca's precocious manner was truly amusing.
Snape, however, kept glancing back and forth between Maca and Hermione without saying a word, his thoughts unknown.
"Professor McGonagall, if it weren't for Maca saving me, I'd probably be eaten by a troll by now," Hermione pleaded.
"I think we need to talk to Dumbledore about the Smash Curse," Professor McGonagall said. "But I don't think any first-year student has ever been able to defeat a troll on their own. You've earned ten points for Hufflepuff."
"Now, you come with me to the principal's office. As for the rest of you," Professor McGonagall glanced at the others, "you can leave."
Maca glanced at the three of them, then calmly followed Professor McGonagall, who had turned and left, out of the bathroom—in fact, all that remained of it was a cracked and broken door frame.
"Oh—I'm here to deal with this big, big thing," Quirrell stammered as he wiped his face.
Snape gave Harry a cold look, then followed without turning back.
Hermione watched Maca's retreating figure with a worried expression, having no idea whether Maca would be fired or anything.
Harry and Ron, however, did not share this concern, or perhaps they simply hadn't thought about it that much.
"'Curse'? That looks really cool!" Ron looked at the giant lying motionless on the ground, the bowl-sized wound of which looked a little scary.
"Yeah! Even that big bat who only knows how to insult people said 'not bad'! I can't believe it." Harry nodded as well.
"He's just being sarcastic about Maca!" Hermione exclaimed.
