Chapter 56 - 56 Why a military base

Zain's Room

"So there's a lot more to today's deal than the original?" Rain asked.

"Yeah," Zain replied. "Initially, it was just Dane. All of a sudden, City C Don is meeting him as well."

Rain exhaled sharply. "Shit. That ruins the plan. We can't take him down today."

"Exactly," Zain said. "We can't go up against both of them. We'll have to call it off."

Rain nodded. "Agreed."

Silence settled between them.

A moment later, Rain suddenly stood up.

"Shit."

Zain looked at him. "What?"

Rain's jaw tightened, his eyes distant—as if something had just clicked into place. Already reaching for his jacket, he muttered, "Just… a bad feeling. What if—"

Back at Dane's Mansion

"They've stopped," Daisy said, slowing the car and parking at a distance.

Both of them got out and watched as the two men walked into an abandoned military facility, boxes still in their hands. Wanting a better view, Daisy motioned toward the roof of a nearby building. Lara nodded. Within minutes, they were up there.

"Why a military base?" Daisy whispered. "It's not even functional anymore. How do these guys have access to a place like this? Someone would need authority, right?"

"Exactly," Lara said. "And Dane definitely doesn't have that kind of power. He's using someone—has to be. This place is perfect for trade. Close to the harbor, easy movement in and out." She paused. "And no one questions it. People hear 'military' and assume it's official, even if it's abandoned."

"This doesn't look simple anymore," Daisy said. "Someone big is involved."

"Agreed," Lara replied. "Let me call our team and get the blueprint of this place. We need the layout before we step in and see what's really going on."

Daisy stayed on watch with the binoculars while Lara made the call.

"Yes. I need it ASAP," Lara said, then cut the call.

As she lowered her phone, her gaze shifted to the neighboring rooftop. "Did you notice that?" she asked.

"Notice what?" Daisy said, scanning the area.

"I think there's someone else here. Someone other than us."

"I don't see anything suspicious," Daisy replied, adjusting the focus. Then she stiffened. "The two guys are coming out. Empty-handed. Now Dane must be alone with his men."

"So they delivered whatever they came with," Lara said.

"Should we go in?" Daisy asked.

"Not yet. Let's wait five to ten minutes."

"Roger that."

They watched the base closely. Nothing moved for the next ten minutes. Finally, Lara nodded. It was time.

They checked their guns, pulled on their face covers, and moved in carefully, sticking to the shadows. Daisy stayed near the main entrance while Lara scanned the surroundings.

Lara signaled clear.

Inside, voices echoed—heated talk about bringing in more weapons, about plans to tear City B apart. The words sent a chill through them. They recognized one voice immediately.

Dane.

What they didn't know yet was who else was involved.

"You take the right," Lara whispered. "Check for bodyguards and signal once it's clear. I'll take the left. Once both sides are clear, we move on Dane."

They exchanged a quick nod and split.

Moments later, Daisy tapped her earpiece twice—the agreed signal. Lara moved quietly along the left corridor and spotted two guards. She didn't hesitate. One went down instantly. The other stumbled back, shocked.

Lara pushed forward.

The sudden chaos put Dane on alert. He grabbed his gun.

Daisy, who had eyes on him, spoke sharply into the earpiece. "Attack!"

Lara took down the second guard, and without pausing, both women dropped through the opening above to the underground level.

"Shit—the number of men is more than we imagined," Daisy said.

Before they could steady themselves, the man standing next to Dane threw a smoke bomb. Thick smoke flooded the space, swallowing everything.

They struggled to see. Then flashes of gunfire cut through the haze.
