Aetherion Academy shimmered beneath an early spring sun. The campus had shaken off its winter chill, and laughter rippled through the courtyards like birdsong.
Classes had ended for the day, but the grounds buzzed with anticipation. Word had spread—another transfer was arriving, a latecomer whose recommendation came directly from the Central Council.
Lyra, perched on the fountain's edge, kicked her boots against the marble.
"Another one?" she asked. "How many prodigies do they plan to collect?"
Selene smiled faintly. "This one's… different."
Kaelith glanced at her. "You know him."
She hesitated, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Our families traded influence years ago. I thought he'd gone to the Imperial Conservatory."
"Name?" Kaelith asked.
"Eldric Vaelor," she said quietly.
The name rolled through the courtyard before the man himself appeared—tall, composed, dressed in tailored whites edged with gold thread. His hair was the shade of molten amber, and his smile practiced yet almost genuine.
He moved like someone who had never known failure.
> "Selene," Eldric said, bowing with measured grace. "You still look like trouble."
Selene laughed softly. "And you still talk like you own the sun."
Lyra blinked between them, sensing history. Kaelith said nothing.

The Meeting
Eldric's gaze flicked toward Kaelith, assessing. "And you must be the shadow I keep hearing about."
Kaelith met his eyes—calm, unreadable. "Depends who's whispering."
"Everyone," Eldric said easily. "You've made quite an impression."
Selene crossed her arms. "Try not to start a duel before lunch."
"I'm perfectly civil," Eldric said, though the slight tilt of his mouth told another story.
Lyra stepped between them, trying to defuse the current. "Maybe you both could… not test each other's mana reserves in the middle of the garden?"
Kaelith turned away. "No need."
Selene watched him go, unease flickering behind her usual light tone.
Eldric's voice softened. "He's not what I expected."
"No," she said. "He's not."

An Uneasy Balance
Days passed—slower now, every hour layered with quiet tension. Eldric's presence changed the rhythm of the Academy.
Where Kaelith was still water, Eldric was fire contained behind glass—burning, bright, and polite enough to hide it.
He joined Lyra and Selene's study group, always courteous, always helpful. He made instructors laugh, charmed the guards, and still found ways to cross paths with Kaelith.
Sometimes it was coincidence.
Sometimes it wasn't.
During elemental calibration practice, Eldric's energy pulsed gold, flooding the air with warmth. Kaelith's shadows met it instinctively, canceling the surge before it could spark.
The instructor blinked. "Impressive control from both of you."
Selene exhaled softly. Lyra clapped nervously.
Eldric's tone was smooth. "We make quite a pair, don't we?"
Kaelith replied evenly, "Pairs need balance."
"Then perhaps you're my shadow," Eldric said.
Selene frowned. "Enough."

Beneath the Courtyard Lights
That evening, the Academy lights cast long reflections across the lake.
Selene sat on the railing, staring at her own reflection.
"You're quiet," Eldric said behind her.
"Thinking," she murmured.
"About him?"
She didn't answer.
Eldric sighed, leaning beside her. "I know you like your mysteries. But be careful, Selene. Shadows don't love the way we do."
She looked at him then—really looked. "You mean the way you do?"
He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes. "Maybe."
Across the water, Kaelith walked alone along the path of lanterns, unaware of their silhouettes in the distance—or maybe he was, and chose to keep walking.
Above, the stars hung still.
The peace of the Academy held… thin as glass.
