Chapter 135 - One More Question

Arin had thought about it.

Even though he had at least a hundred other questions about all that he had experienced swirling around in his mind, he'd realized he didn't want to spend all day sitting in this strange room and asking the man them all.

Not only was the overload of information going to stop making sense after some time, but also, there was the very real fear of the white-haired man finally getting tired of him.

And much as the man seemed refined and kindly as ever, even in the face of all his demands and disrespect, Arin wasn't keen on discovering whatever his breaking point was.

After all, it was a fact that the man was under no obligation to help anyone in this situation, other than his own student - Rin.

That, of course, was most pressing issue; facilitating Rin's return, and sending him back to his own world.

But he knew that the white-haired tower master would almost certainly tell him if there had been any other developments on that end.

Maybe he'd misunderstood the goal of the mystery solo assignment Tarra had been sent on; maybe it hadn't been about his situation after all. Or maybe, whatever she'd left to do hadn't borne any results.

Either way, he decided he'd trust the white-haired man to tell him more about that on his own.

For now...

'I really need you to tell me more about Rin,' he said. 'I've already messed up at replicating his personality. That, at least, can be sort of explained away, thanks to most people not really knowing him. Like Siel, they'll probably just think his reticence hides parts of his nature.'

'However, I'll be stumped if he comes into contact with someone who actually knows him. Or even if someone knows enough details about certain parts of his life, like whatever 'secret' it was that that kid had been worrying about discovering.'

The tower master's red irises had remained locked onto his face the entire time he'd been speaking, and Arin sat up straighter, somewhat disconcerted by the gaze.

Soon afterwards, though, the man before him let out a small sigh.

'I suppose you really ought to know...' he said at last.

Did he sound... disappointed?

At the prospect of having to do away with some of the unnecessary suspense he'd built up?

Arin pursed his lips somewhat pityingly.

Being the banished master of a low-tier magic tower in the middle of nowhere was probably terribly boring, huh? Could he really blame the man for wanting to fool around a bit, when something exciting finally came up in his life?

..,

...Yes, he absolutely could.

Thankfully, the tower master didn't seem to have noticed the brief straying of his thoughts. The man was looking into the distance somewhat blankly.

After a couple of seconds, he seemed to have confirmed something, and smiled.

'We'd be here for a while if I were to narrate the hows and whys of my disciple's life, Arin, and I do believe that neither of us wants that. Instead, I think I'll have you go visit the quarters of another one of Rin's fellow students.'

'Little Alma has, in her possession, a rare Mirror of Record. Go ask her if you might make use of it.'
