Chapter 56 - Chapter Five – The Flight from Aeloria

The night they fled the capital, Aeloria burned behind them like a dying star.

The palace towers shimmered faintly against the horizon, their banners aflame, their bells tolling in warning. Smoke climbed into the moonlight as if the city itself mourned what had been lost — or perhaps what had been set free.

Kael urged his horse faster along the mountain pass. Isolde rode behind him, her cloak whipping in the cold wind, her golden hair veiled in soot and shadow. Behind them, Elira's diversion had drawn the guards away, but the sound of pursuit still carried faintly through the hills — a drumbeat of betrayal and resolve.

The river glimmered below, winding through the forest like molten glass. The moonlight turned the waters pale, reflecting the ghost of the flames behind them.

"They'll hunt us to the edge of the realm," Isolde said, her voice breaking the long silence.

"They'll try," Kael answered, not looking back.

Her eyes flicked toward the distant glow of the city. "You left everything."

"I left nothing worth keeping."

But even as he said it, a flicker of pain crossed his face. The crown, the council, the people — all of it had turned to ash.

By dawn, they reached the northern road — a winding path through the frostbitten fields of Greymarch Vale. The landscape was quiet, but not at peace.

The villages they passed were half-abandoned, doors nailed shut, wells covered in black cloth. In one courtyard, Kael saw a family burning what looked like a body wrapped in linen. The smoke rose thick and dark, the same hue as the flames that had claimed the Hollow.

Elira's warnings echoed in his mind: "Where shadow feeds, flame follows."

They stopped by a stream to rest. Isolde dismounted slowly, her breath visible in the cold air. When she knelt by the water, frost melted beneath her touch, turning the surface to steam.

Kael watched her, torn between awe and fear.

"How long can you keep it contained?" he asked quietly.

She didn't look at him. "I don't know. Every time I use it, it grows stronger. And colder."

He frowned. "Colder?"

She nodded. "It doesn't burn like it used to. It feels… hollow."

Kael crouched beside her. "That's the shadow's influence. The Black Ember's call."

Her gaze lifted, eyes reflecting the silver of the river. "Maybe it isn't calling me. Maybe it's remembering me."

He hesitated. "What do you mean?"

"Every night, I dream of a man made of flame and darkness. He stands in a place like the Hollow, but older — a temple of light and stone. He looks at me and says, 'You left me there.'"

Kael's pulse quickened. "It's the Shadow King."

"I don't think he wants to destroy me," she said softly. "I think he wants to finish what we started."

Kael reached for her hand. "You're not him. And you're not his end."

But when his fingers brushed her skin, he felt it — the faint rhythm of a heartbeat that wasn't hers.

That night, they camped beneath the ruins of an old watchtower. The fire crackled low, throwing pale light against the stones. The wind carried the sound of wolves in the distance — or something like wolves.

Kael sat awake long after Isolde had fallen asleep. He cleaned his blade by habit, though it was more symbol than weapon now — the Moonsilver shattered beyond repair.

He found himself staring into the fire. The flames shifted, turning momentarily black at their base. A whisper followed, faint but distinct.

She burns for you, as I once did.

Kael stiffened, scanning the darkness. "Who's there?"

The whisper deepened, almost tender. You think love will save her? It's the same love that made me.

He rose sharply, drawing what was left of the sword. "Show yourself."

The fire went out.

Darkness swallowed the camp. For a heartbeat, he saw a pair of amber eyes open in the void — ancient, sorrowful, and full of promise.

Then they were gone.

Isolde stirred beside him, gasping, her hands glowing faintly gold. Kael dropped to his knees, shaking her awake.

"Isolde! Wake up!"

Her eyes opened — and for an instant, they were black.

He froze.

Her voice came layered, hers and another's. "He's coming."

Then the light exploded from her palms, and the watchtower's stones shattered outward.

When the smoke cleared, Kael stood over her, shielding her from falling debris. She blinked up at him, dazed and terrified.

"I didn't mean to," she whispered. "He was there. He touched me."

Kael pulled her close. "You're safe now."

But as he held her, he looked down and saw that the ground beneath them had scorched in the shape of a crown.

At dawn, Elira found them. Her cloak was torn, her face streaked with soot, but her eyes still burned bright.

"They've named you traitors," she said without preamble. "Seris has seized the throne. She calls herself Regent of Light and claims your fire is the shadow reborn."

Kael's expression hardened. "Then we'll take the truth to the people."

Elira shook her head. "The people don't want truth. They want someone to blame."

She looked at Isolde, whose hands were still faintly glowing. "They'll see her as prophecy fulfilled — the end of the age."

Isolde's voice trembled. "Maybe they're right."

"No," Kael said sharply. "You're not an ending. You're the only chance we have left."

Elira unrolled a worn map, placing her finger on a distant mark. "Then our path leads here — the ruins of the Sanctum of Vareth, where the first flame was born. The Keepers left something there, something older than prophecy."

Kael frowned. "What kind of something?"

Elira's gaze was distant. "The truth."

They broke camp at sunrise, heading north toward the mountains. The forest loomed ahead, ancient and silver beneath the light of dawn.

Behind them, far across the plains, the bells of Aeloria tolled again — slower now, heavier. The sound carried on the wind like a warning.

In the shadow of the ruined watchtower, unseen by any of them, a raven landed on a fallen stone. Its single amber eye glowed faintly as it pecked at the scorched earth.

The mark of the crown pulsed once — and from the ashes, a flicker of black flame stirred.
