Joe's POV
The moonlight bled through the trees in thin, silver lines as I padded through the forest on four paws. The night was heavy with fog, thick enough to muffle even the crickets. Every rustle, every shift of shadow sent instinctive pricks of awareness through my senses, but I didn't stop. I could smell the metallic tang of the old wards in the distance, the same ones Lily had described.
Lily.
I shouldn't have been thinking about her now. Not when every sound could mean a trap, not when the success of our mission, and our freedom depended on tonight.
But damn it, my mind kept circling back to her.
The same totem I had been searching for since we got here, the one thing standing between me and redemption, had revealed itself to her. Not to me. To her.
And worse, it had been through Devante.
