Chapter 26: Invasion (Part 1)
Wall Guard Jack:
"We are under attack by wolves."
"Quickly… quickly alert everyone… you go and ring the right wall bell. Don't just stand there like a statue, now's not the time to freeze, I know the feeling but I won't stand in my place waiting for death."
I looked at my fellow mage, who had no expression, only paleness like a corpse.
"We're done for… we won't survive…" said my companion with a trembling voice.
"This is not the time for such talk, go alert Lady Dark. Don't lose hope. I'll cover your place and mine." I pushed my mage companion to move.
"Ability [Fireball] – Skill Fireball. Hurry up… move, you idiot."
I kicked my mage companion's back, knocking him on his head to wake him up.
He stood, got up, and ran with all his might, tears on his face.
"Fhew…" I stopped my fear with a strong exhale, "and now, how will I deal with all this?"
An endless group of wolves with gray fur and blue eyes began trying to climb the wooden wall. I managed to count fifty, and I could still see more coming out of the forest.
"Ability [Fireball] – Skill Giant Fireball." I launched a Rank E skill.
A large fireball with a diameter of half a meter appeared and headed toward the wolves that were trying to jump to reach the top of the wall.
The wolves dodged it quickly, so it hit the grass and burned the sides of some wolves.
"Ugh… they dodged it, these night wolves. How annoying. Known for their agility and night vision. Ability [Fireball] – Skill Giant Fireball." I cast my skill again, which hit the wolves due to their numbers.
Turning them instantly into burning wolves. But it didn't end there, as that gap was filled again with another group of wolves.
It's working somehow… thank God… but this won't end… where are they coming from? I thought.
Their numbers benefit us as long as they don't reach the top of the wall. There are currently ten people on the wall, but almost all of them are Rank F. With the alarm, more will come, we ten must hold out until then.
"Guys, use all your strength, our lives depend on ourselves until help arrives. Ability [Fireball] – Skill Giant Fireball." I said, encouraging my companions as I fired another fireball that charred some wolves below who couldn't dodge it.
Thus, in the first few minutes, many Rank E skills were launched — fire, lightning, rock, wind, etc.
Leaving the wolves in great suffering without achieving any of their goals.
Dring dring dring dring
"Finally." Joy appeared on my tired face, exhausted from continuous casting, "we survived… hold on, only a little more left."
"Ooooooooooo…"
When I finished my words, a very strong howl came from inside the forest. I covered my ears.
"What is that? A howl? So strong." I held my heart and felt a sudden urge to run away.
But after the howl, a strange change occurred in the wolves' movement, "Whaaaaat????!! You're kidding… how did the wolves suddenly become organized?" I was shocked to see the wolves begin climbing over each other, getting closer to reaching the top of the wall.
"Ability [Fireball] – Skill Giant Fireball." I launched a Rank E skill toward the column of wolves coming toward me.
I burned the first wolves, but the next ones climbed over them and continued rising.
"Damn it, the power of the skill isn't enough to stop them. Ugh… if only I had an [Earth] type ability. Ability [Fireball] – Skill Giant Fireball."
I found no solution for my impending crisis, allowing the wolves to reach the top.
"Ability [Fireball] – Skill Fireball." I fired a fireball toward the wolf that reached the top, sending it back down with a whimper.
But the next one came, and I sent it down too. This continued until wolves came from my sides, growling toward me.
"Damn that idiot… why did he stop casting, because of him the wolves managed to reach the top from his side. My problem just got worse." I was close to crying.
One of the wolves advanced toward me as it ran, noticing that, I sent a fireball at it.
That made it retreat without being hit by the fireball, which was the size of a soccer ball.
"Tch… I can't hit wolves when they're alone."
Another wolf advanced, but this time it jumped toward my face. When I saw this, a smile appeared on my face.
"This is what I was waiting for, you fool, in the air how will you dodge? Ability [Fireball] – Skill Fireball."
The fireball hit the wolf's face, making it fall dead in its place.
"Arghhh…"
Upon the wolf's death, the others lost their fear, resulting in all of them attacking me at once.
I cast and cast many skills, but it didn't help me survive the massive number of wolves. My mana ran out.
"Ah… I'm sorry, my love… my children… pant… I won't see you again… sorry, I wanted to see you… pant… at least once more."
I said my last words as one wolf bit my shoulder, another my neck, and another my hand.
—
Kane:
Mercenary Camp, Front Wall.
"For god's sake, there's no end to them. We need backup immediately. Where's Dark? And Kris, Selene, Raphos… etc." I asked while swinging my sword to kill the wolf that tried to pounce on my neck.
"Numbers 11, 15, 3, 4, and many weak members went with the right deputy Dran into the forest a week ago and never came back. As for number 6, I sent someone to wake her, her sleep is heavy. Come on, you'll go to the right wall, things are worse there than here." Vern replied, launching ice spears that pierced some wolves lunging toward him.
"Alright, I hope this hell ends soon, we've lost many members. How did we not notice such a large pack of wolves? Despite searching the forest many times."
Said Kara as she struck a wolf's face with her stone fist, sending it back into the forest.
"I think we're facing an intelligent wolf leader. That's how I explain their coordinated climbing strategy."
I said my thoughts while dodging the wolf that tried to bite my neck by leaning to the side.
"Oooooooooo…"
"Another howl… and filled with mana. Can I run away?" Vern joked.
"Hey… am I imagining, or is that a wolf bigger than the others… argh," I said.
—
Vern:
A large wolf, the size of a car, appeared. It advanced at a tremendous speed toward the wall, leaping and biting off Kane's head while he was talking, swallowing it in one bite.
"What the hell? How fast… that idiot, I told him a thousand times not to lose focus. Watch out, that's the White Night Wolf. It has a skill that allows it to move extremely fast, but it needs time to activate it, so don't give it space."
I gritted my teeth and cast the skill [Great Ice Spear] of Rank C. The huge spear, half a meter thick, shot toward the wolf.
The huge white-furred, blue-eyed wolf dodged the spear with a step to the side and charged at me, slashing with its claws.
But before the wolf could hit me, Kara appeared, her hands enhanced by the [Stone Hands] ability, blocking the wolf's claw.
I retreated and cast the skill [Icy Breath] of Rank D, trying to slow the massive wolf's movements.
The giant wolf stepped back and avoided the icy breath.
"Ability [Ice Summoning] – Ice Chains."
But then, in the spot where the wolf stopped, many ice chains appeared, trying to bind it.
When the wolf noticed, it tried to jump to dodge them. Quickly, Kara appeared in midair, "You won't escape."
That made it attack her with its claw, ignoring the ice chains, which managed to bind it.
"Ability [Ice Summoning] – Fast Ice Arrow Skill."
I quickly launched another skill of Rank C, forming an icy arrow that shot toward the wolf, piercing its skull and killing it.
"Easy," Kara said as she looked at me.
"It wasn't easy… without your risk, we wouldn't have taken it down so fast," I said with worry on my face.
"Vern, watch out…"
