Chapter 22 - The price of ignorance (1)

Elena and Carson vanished from their spots.

CLANG!

The two of their swords clashed with each other. Elena pushed her sword forward, making Carson jump back to negate the force.

Sounds of swords clashing spread throughout the arena. All the students couldn't avert their eyes from the stage. They kept observing with rapt attention, no one speaking a word.

Grey was surprised too, seeing the two of them clash. They were top entrants for a reason. Curious, he activated his eyes of revelation to check on Carson.

"So, he's similar in stats to Elena. No doubt Grey lost so miserably."

 CLANG!!

The two of their swords clashed again. They then immediately jumped back, gaining distance between each other.

The sharp edge of Elena's blade started glowing with a bluish light, aura infusing in the sword.

"Moon slash!" She slashed her sword in an arc downwards from the top. An aura slash rushed out of her sword, dashing towards Carson.

"Red slash!" Carson didn't tarry. He activated his skill. A red aura slash moved out to intercept Elena's attack.

BOOM!!

The two aura slashes clashed, creating a booming noise as a shockwave spread out, the hairs of the spectator fluttering back from the strong winds. Smoke rose out, small embers of fire spread around on the platform while the two attacks cancelled each other out.

"Enough!" Zarnak hollered. He swung his arm towards the platform, creating a gust of wind, moving forward, dousing the small embers of fire and dispersing the smoke.

"You two can stop now." He said with a satisfied smile on his face.

The two of them were strongest in the first year. If they fought seriously, the platform could get destroyed, making this joint practical class useless.

He stopped them as this much was enough to boost the adrenaline of the students, and the effects could be seen on their faces already.

Elena and Carson sheathed their swords, nodded at each other, then turned towards Zarnak and the professors, and bowed to show their respect.

"It was a great duel. You two can go back now."

The two of them walked down the platform and started moving to their seat. When Carson was moving up the stairs, he nodded at a student from the A class with his lips curved up into a grin.

"Alright. Who wants to go next?" Zarnak looked at the crowd with expectation and excitement.

"I'll go next professor!" one student from the A class stood up. He was also from the dragon race, with two small black horns jutting out of his temples. Black hair and vertically slit pupils.

He was Waylon, the very one, who Carson had nodded while climbing up the stairs. A follower of Carson and his loyal lackey.

"Hahaha! That's the enthusiasm. Come child." Zarnak laughed excitedly, glad at him volunteering for the duel.

"Who else?" Zarnak asked, looking back at the students, but there was no one who stood up.

Why would they want to offend someone from Carson's group. Their whole academy years would become hell if they dare to.

Zarnak's face darkened, his excitement vanished. Being a battle freak, he hated those who cower from a fight. He was about to roar at them when Waylon spoke up.

"I have something to say professor."

Zarnak turned towards him curiously. "Speak child."

"Since this is a joint class. I think students of the same class dueling amongst each other will not be that effective. We should exchange moves with students from the other classes, especially C class, since they will benefit the most from this exchange, and we'll all be able to gauge our strengths and weaknesses." He said respectfully.

Zarnak went into thought at his suggestion. He then turned towards the other professors, especially Thorgar.

"I think that's a good idea elder." Thorgar accepted without hesitation.

He knew that his students will probably lose miserably, but he wanted them to feel the difference in power among them and the others. Breaking their spirits so that he can forge them and awaken their fighting spirit, making them work harder and train more.

"Hmm…alright. Let's do that then." Zarnak nodded. He then looked towards Waylon. "Since no one is coming out themselves, let me ask you then, do you have someone specific in mind?"

"Yes sir. I do." Waylon said.

Zarnak raised his brows. He knew Waylon had given this suggestion with someone in mind already, but he still let this happen, we just wanted the duels to go on, no matter how.

"Who is it?"

Waylon moved his eyes towards the C class seatings. Most of them were trying to hide their faces, refusing to look at him, praying that he doesn't pick them.

But Grey sat confidently, he knew Waylon was going to chose him. He had seen Carson and him exchanging nods. He had faced this kind of bullying a lot in his school days, but he made every one of them regret later.

While others were cowering, Grey was looking straight at Waylon, not averting his eyes, since he had activated his skill.

[ Waylon Drakon ]

Waylon looked right into Grey. The corners of his lips lifted up into a smirk.

"Grey Silverthorne sir."

Everyone's eyes turned towards Grey. Some looked at him with pity, while some grinned at his misfortunate, hoping to see another great show.

"You ignorant fool. I wanted to test my strength anyway. Let's see what you amount to with those stats!" Grey stood up with a smile on his face.

"I accept."
