Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Tongguan

Fang Shenyan spoke with a calm tone. After all, they were inside the hotel, where their status stood above the ghosts, so he wasn't worried about being attacked.

"Damn, you really lucked out!"

Yu Guo jumped excitedly, blurting it out without context.

His second persona sometimes had the same temperament, but what came out of his mouth was even more nonsensical.

"Tch, the peeping ghost looks so ugly—I wouldn't want it even if it begged me!"

Fang Shenyan adjusted his glasses and said softly:

"The first day I noticed it, I went out and dragged it back to the second floor. It obeyed.

But the next night it came again. And on the third night, it showed up as well.

Its persistence is almost embarrassing."

Ji Li frowned at him. The peeping ghost's peculiar habit wasn't surprising.

But showing up punctually every night, leaving its assigned area against the hotel rules just to watch Fang Shenyan—this was unexpected.

He suddenly thought of Fang Shenyan's left hand, where the tattoo unique to the peeping ghost remained.

Could it be because of that tattoo…

He didn't voice the thought, only gave a casual reassurance:

"Inside the hotel, it doesn't matter."

Stretching lazily, Ji Li pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, handed one to Fang Shenyan, and with the cigarette in his mouth, walked toward the first-floor lobby.

This time, the lobby was already set up with six chairs arranged around a large desk at the center.

It seemed that as the number of people grew, the hotel's service was upgrading as well.

Ji Li chose the nearest seat without hesitation. Fang and Yu sat to his left and right.

Three copies of the newcomer manual were placed on the desk. The three of them waited in silence for 2:00 p.m. to arrive.

...

When the clock struck exactly two, a scorching white light appeared out of thin air.

Ji Li raised an eyebrow, watching quietly as the light faded to reveal two figures.

A man and a woman—arriving at the same time. Their closeness suggested they were a couple.

The man stood around 1.8 meters, not bulky but tall and upright. His features weren't especially striking, but his sharp contours and the unspoken heroic air between his brows gave his not-so-broad frame an undeniable sense of safety.

Beside him was a slim woman with long black hair tied into a neat ponytail, dressed in workwear. She looked young.

Her gentle face lacked aggression, yet her attire and bearing revealed a brisk, commanding energy.

Yu Guo's eyes lit up. Compared to the last batch of newcomers, this pair was much more impressive just by appearance.

But Fang Shenyan frowned. He looked at the man's narrow phoenix eyes, their gleam undimmed even under obvious supernatural influence.

The aura flowing from both of them felt upright and righteous.

He hesitated, then whispered to Ji Li, "Something's off with these two."

Ji Li had already sensed it himself—the aura around the newcomers gave him a strange familiarity.

Before he could speak, the man addressed them first. His gaze swept across all three before fixing squarely on Ji Li.

"You're the acting manager of Branch Seven, aren't you?" The man's voice was deep, resonant, magnetic.

At those words, Ji Li's breath caught. Fang and Yu both gasped sharply.

*How is that possible?*

*How could he react like that?*

The second persona was completely stunned.

*Could it be that he was once a staff too?*

The third persona asked in disbelief.

Ji Li narrowed his eyes but stayed seated. He pulled out a cigarette and offered it across the table.

The man only smiled, shook his head, and instead pulled his wife down into a chair.

Rather than accept Ji Li's cigarette, he brought out his own pack.

"My name is Tongguan. This is my wife, Chang Nian.

We come from Tianhai Hotel, Eleventh Branch. I was once the acting manager there."

*Hiss—*

Ji Li hadn't expected the so-called newcomer to carry such a status. This Tongguan couldn't even be considered a newcomer.

The man's identity and bearing were extraordinary—it was obvious he had gone through numerous ghost missions.

Ji Li had only just taken over Branch Seven and knew nothing about how many branches Tianhai Hotel actually had.

Now, hearing that Tongguan had once been the acting manager of Branch Eleven left him unsettled. Just how vast is Tianhai's reach?

Tongguan glanced around at the three present.

"It's clear your Branch Seven isn't much better off than Eleven was.

Only three staff—must've just taken over not long ago.

No need to guess. Branch Eleven was shut down."

Fang Shenyan adjusted his glasses. He sensed something different about Tongguan compared to themselves.

Everything about the man's demeanor was so ordinary.

Tongguan seemed like someone who had struggled up from the bottom yet managed to keep his heart intact.

Whereas none of the three at Branch Seven could be called normal.

"Why was it shut down?"

"I don't know. All I know is, my wife and I had just led our team through the task of advancing to two-star.

But then Tianhai suddenly declared Branch Eleven closed.

All six of us staff were split up in pairs and reassigned to other branches."

Though he was answering Fang Shenyan's question, Tongguan's eyes never left Ji Li.

Ji Li pressed his lips together and drew hard on his cigarette.

Neither Tongguan nor his wife, Chang Nian, were ordinary.

Tongguan carried himself calm and steady, neither arrogant nor servile. Chang Nian, for her part, showed a composure far greater than Ding Miaoxin had.

She never spoke, leaving the words entirely to her husband—clear confidence that he could handle any situation.

A man who successfully led his team to two-star…

Ji Li studied the seemingly mild man whose every word was carefully measured. Troublesome.

He glanced at Fang Shenyan. Fang's face was expressionless, but he gave a slight shake of the head.

Ji Li understood: Fang was wary of Tongguan's arrival.

Ji Li gave a quiet, dry laugh, exhaled a smoke ring, and rose slowly.

"Regardless, welcome to you and your wife."

Tongguan also stood. With equal footing, he met Ji Li's gaze.

One dark and brooding, the other upright and resolute—they clasped hands firmly.

...

Yu Guo, who had been silent the whole time, suddenly sprang from his chair. He hurried to the center of the hall, glancing around.

"Wait—that's not right. Weren't there supposed to be three newcomers? Where's the other one?"

The moment the words left his mouth, a white light engulfed the floor beneath him.

Ji Li turned just in time to see Yu Guo swallowed by the light. A scream rang out.

When the glow faded, Ji Li's expression turned odd.

The newcomer had landed directly on Yu Guo, pinning him underfoot. Yu Guo howled in pain beneath the stranger's shoes.
