Chapter 60 - Middle of a Battlefield

Pov: Eirian

We have been walking for about 30 minutes already, and the weather here has been noticeable. The wastelands weren't just hard to survive in because there was no life here, but because of how intense the weather was compared to the rest of the world.

I was already mostly used to the weather, but the others were not so much. Eira was shivering while Ael was only bothered by it a bit. Not surprisingly, Amiel didn't seem bothered by it. What was throwing me off was the fact that he almost looked immune to it.

"Amiel, what happened?" I asked, confused.

He turned his neck towards me as he pushed the wagon. "What do you mean?"

"I mean, one moment you were huge, and now, you're back to normal." I held my hand up, indicating the height change.

"Oh!" He chuckled, "That's my miracle."

"Your miracle?" Eira spoke, and Ael listened in but kept his face forward.

"Basically, when I get colder, I grow bigger. When I do, I get stronger." He continued. "Well, that's what it seems to be like."

I held my hand to my chin, "That's... interesting, but what if it's super hot, then what?"

"Well, that's where my second miracle comes in: I can actually control the temperature around me. Not by a lot, but enough to keep me strong."

"So, your class?"

"Tank," He added.

"That makes sense," Ael replied.

"You know, now that I realize it, I never asked you all what your miracles were." I grabbed my chin, looking up to the sky.

Ael chuckled, "That's right, huh? Well, mine is blood manipulation; I can use my blood to make different objects. The only downside seems to be that it uses my own blood, and there are limitations to its miniplantation. As for my second miracle, I have blood sense; I can sense people around me. Class, assassin."

"I mean, I could guess what your miracle was just from fighting back there." I pointed my thumb back the way we came. "Wait, how are you not cold then?" I asked, "Your miracle has nothing to do with cold resistance."

"I circulate it through my body better. If you do that, you can stay warmer."

"Smart," Amiel replied. When he did, he turned towards Eira. "How about you?"

"Well, I can conjure a weapon and have an astral projection of myself."

"Wait, that's cool," Amiel replied.

"It is, isn't it?" She leaned forward as he kept walking and looked at him. "I can even use it to scout out different areas." She looked up, poking her cheek. "I didn't have much of a chance to use it in the academy, so it still feels a bit weird."

"Wait, back up, you can scout different areas?" Ael asked. "That is cool, just think of the different things you can do with that."

She chuckled.

"Question, can you actually scout around us right now?" I looked at Eira. "We don't know if we are enemy territory right now; this scouting ability might be nice right now."

"That's right." Amiel added, "Eira, if you don't mind, could you?"

"Sure...?" She lingered as a blue mist came from her and a body lifted into the sky.

"How high can that go?" I asked.

"Decently high." She replied. After a moment of searching, she said, "I don't see anything."

"Well, that's good—" I let out, looking at the others as we stood at a standstill while Eira covered one of her eyes, searching around us.

"Wait! I do see something."

Upon hearing this, I turned, confused, "Huh?"

"I see strange metal boxes coming our way.... and people as well."

"Tanks?" Amiel let out.

"Where?" Ael asked.

"Uhhh, from our left... no, our right." She pointed.

"What do we do?" I asked.

Ael looked around for a moment. "We—"

Before we knew it, a plane made its way above us, soaring. As it did, a straight shot takes down the plane. Looking at it, it didn't seem like a missile, but rather a straight shot of something unknown, as a red streak followed it. As the plane fell, it made its way towards us.

"Run!" Amiel yelled.

Leaving the wagon behind, we ran back to where we came from and tried to take cover. The plane slid towards us, stopping moments before making contact. Soon, the whole wasteland turned into a battlefield.

Different men ran onto the battlefield, wearing blue coats and carrying weapons. A few ran in with a star on their capes, while others wore standard military uniforms.

Soon, the ground broke and shook, as men fell on the battlefield. Other men took out their swords and brought them into their chests.

The other men on the opposite side wore black uniforms with a gold lining. Some other men also had the same star that the blue coat men had.

Using the plane to take cover, we leaned on it. Trying to catch our breath, I turned to the other and asked, "What is this?"

More explosions go off in the background. Soon, I realize different abilities go off. This wasn't just a normal war; this was a war with people who had pacts with the God of Numen.

"I... I don't know?" Eira replied. "One moment there was no one and now..." She looked back, seeing more bloodshed on the battlefield. 'Well, this.'

Ael looked around, "We need to get out of here."

"How?" Amiel replied.

Ael didn't reply and looked around for any opportunity. When he did, Eira yelped from another explosion close by. The man who was on the plane was exiting and fell onto the floor.

Panicking, he reached for his weapon and was getting ready to shoot Eira. Before he could, Ael formed a needle and flicked it to the head of the soldier.

I turned to him as he just killed a man. I stood there stunned.

"We need to make a run for it!" Ael yelled as more explosions went off. When he did, a huge shock came from the middle of the battlefield, making it all go silent. Looking, I see a lone man standing there.
