Chapter 45 -  The Moon That Refused to Fall

The moon was threatening emotional violence again.

Aarav was beginning to suspect celestial bodies took things personally.

Standing beneath a shattered moon suspended over an ancient throne designed by people who clearly hated happiness, he watched silver cracks spread through the floating lunar fragments above Crownspire.

Each fracture sent tremors through the Hollow Crown.

The palace groaned.

The kingdom remembered pain.

And somewhere far above, the real moon in the outer heavens answered.

Badly.

Very badly.

Kaiden stared upward.

"I would like to formally apologise to every normal problem I ever disrespected."

Reasonable.

Deeply reasonable.

Lyra stood before the First Moon Throne, moonlight wrapping around her like old promises trying to become chains again.

Her silver eyes reflected the broken moon above.

Queen Selene Ardyn stood beside the throne like a ghost refusing retirement.

Cassian had the expression of a man realising history was just repeating itself with better architecture.

Riyan looked spiritually taxed.

Tradition.

Beautiful.

Mira Valen leaned against a cracked pillar at the chamber entrance, watching everything like a queen who had survived enough disasters to charge emotional rent.

A perfect audience.

Terribly assembled.

Selene lifted one hand.

The chamber changed.

Ancient moon runes ignited across the floor.

Silver circles spread outward, touching every wall like old law remembering its shape.

The First Queen's voice became quieter.

Which was somehow worse.

"The Moon Throne does not rule."

A pause.

"It balances."

Lyra folded her arms.

"And by balance, you mean emotional blackmail."

Selene almost smiled.

"Yes."

Excellent.

Honesty.

Refreshing.

Terrible.

She looked upward.

"When the first celestial war began, the moon was split to seal what fell from the upper heavens."

Another throne.

Another prison.

Of course.

Selene continued.

"The fragments above are not merely moonstone."

Her eyes darkened.

"They are chains."

Silence.

Bad silence.

The familiar kind.

Aarav sighed.

"I miss when rocks were just rocks."

Kaiden nodded.

"Yes. Simpler times."

Mira, from the doorway—

"No, you don't."

Fair.

Annoying.

Correct.

Selene pointed toward the broken moon.

"If the throne collapses, the seal breaks."

A pause.

"And what sleeps inside the moon wakes."

Kaiden closed his eyes.

"No."

He pointed upward without looking.

"Whatever that is, I reject it spiritually."

Universal agreement.

Riyan whispered—

"Can one family line have one normal ancestor?"

Cassian answered immediately.

"No."

Correct.

Painfully correct.

Lyra stepped closer to the throne.

The silver crystal pulsed like a heartbeat.

Waiting.

Hungry.

Ancient.

She looked at Selene.

"You accepted this."

Not an accusation.

Question.

The First Queen nodded.

"I did."

A pause.

"I thought sacrifice made me noble."

Her gaze softened.

"It mostly made me lonely."

That line stayed.

Because prisons were always lonelier from the inside.

Aarav looked at Lyra.

At the girl who fought like moonlight and argued like truth.

At someone's destiny kept trying to turn into architecture.

No.

Absolutely not.

He had opinions.

Strong ones.

Professionally disruptive.

Lyra looked at him.

And understood immediately.

Dangerous woman.

Excellent taste.

She asked softly—

"If I say yes…"

A pause.

"Do I disappear?"

Selene answered honestly.

"Yes."

No softening.

No lies.

Good.

Cruel.

Necessary.

Because false comfort was just prettier betrayal.

Lyra nodded once.

Then—

without drama—

said,

"No."

The chamber shook.

The Moon Throne screamed.

Not metaphorically.

Actually screamed.

Silver cracks spread across the floor.

The broken moon above trembled violently.

Mira muttered—

"Well."

A pause.

"That was optimistic."

Reasonable.

Very reasonable.

Selene closed her eyes.

Not disappointed.

Relieved.

Because sometimes refusal was the right prayer.

The throne, however, disagreed violently.

Moonlight exploded.

The First Moon Throne awakened.

Fully.

Silver-black chains erupted from the crystal seat, tearing through the chamber like divine roots.

The floating moon fragments above spun faster.

A colossal eye opened inside the shattered moon.

Wonderful.

Absolutely terrible.

A moon with opinions.

Exactly what no one needed.

Kaiden screamed—

"WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAVE EYES?!"

Excellent question.

No answer.

As always.

The voice that followed was not Selene's.

Not human.

Older.

Colder.

A presence buried inside lunar silence.

Who refuses the inheritance?

Lyra stood against the pressure.

Blade drawn.

Moonlight answering moonlight.

"I do."

The eye opened wider.

Interested.

Dangerous.

You reject eternity?

She answered immediately.

"Yes."

A pause.

"I prefer bad decisions I choose myself."

Aarav looked at her.

That was suspiciously attractive.

Concerning.

Very concerning.

The moon-being's voice deepened.

Then let the sky fall with you.

Perfect.

Reasonable villain escalation.

The chains descended.

Aarav moved first.

Nightfall rose.

Shadow against moonlight.

He cut through the first chain.

The Endblade answered the second question.

Cassian shouted formation changes as if strategy itself had entered combat.

Riyan discovered Noble Panic had excellent stabbing reflexes.

Kaiden became lightning and emotionally unstable.

Mira smiled like this was why she kept inviting dangerous people.

Selene stood still before the throne.

Watching.

Judging.

Hoping.

The first queen had already made her choice.

Now it was theirs.

At the centre of the storm, Lyra faced the eye in the moon.

Its pressure tried to force obedience.

Tried to make destiny feel like duty.

Tried to convince her that sacrifice was the only language love understood.

She hated that.

Because she had believed it once.

Because royal blood taught girls to disappear politely.

No more.

She raised her blade.

Moonlight sharpened into rebellion.

"I am not your queen."

Silver fire exploded around her.

"I am not your prison."

The throne cracked.

The chamber screamed.

The moon above split wider.

Selene smiled.

Proud.

Ancient.

Free.

The moon-being roared.

Then who are you?!

Lyra stood in the centre of ruin.

Alive.

Terrified.

Certain.

And answered—

"Someone who stayed."

A pause.

"Someone who chose herself."

The words hit like law.

Because freedom was not grand.

Sometimes it was simply refusing to vanish.

The Endblade in Aarav's hand burnt black.

He saw it.

The real target.

Not the moon.

Not the chains.

The throne.

Always the throne.

Of course.

Furniture remained the enemy.

He ran.

Toward the First Moon Throne.

Toward another prison pretending to be necessary.

The moon screamed.

Selene stepped aside.

At last.

Permission.

Aarav lifted the Endblade.

And smiled faintly.

"Your family has terrible furniture."

Lyra, somehow mid-apocalypse—

"I know."

Then—

BLACK STEEL

against

SILVER ETERNITY.

The blade fell.

And the moon refused to remain a prison.
