Lila comes out of nowhere, shoving us with every ounce of strength she has. We slam onto the ground hard, all three of us, as the monster's claws shred the pavement where we were just standing.
Then it roars."RAWR."
The sound drills straight through my skull like it's grinding my Bone up!.
Damn… I feel abused.
Beside me, Ivy's voice cracks. "Vesper!!! Where is Vesper!!! Noona!"
She grabs my sleeve with both hands, shaking like she'll disappear if she lets go.
I then force myself up, knees wobbling, and grab Lila's hand,
while Ivy clings to my chest like a terrified Cat.
I looked around—
The parking lot is a mess of smoke, cracking pavement, and glowing, something... falling from the still open portal. And then I saw her.
Far.
Too far...
Vesper stands alone, not with us, but near the sidewalk...
half-kneeling, hand glowing faintly gold, and breathing hard.
"WHAT!" I yelled, voice cracking.
"WHY ARE YOU THERE?!"
Vesper lifts her head, her expression weird... Like between shame and irritation... "I attempted teleportation," she says in her elegant Victorian tone, even while panting.
I stared at her. "Then why didn't you teleport US too?!?" She lowered her head slightly. "I tried. Truly. But my mana is… insufficient. The spell pulled only myself."
She clenches her fist, the faint glow flickered out like a dying candle. "I failed to bring thee with me."
Atp... I want to yell...
I want to scream...
I want to demand why the universe hates me... But the beast roars again, "RAWR~" turning its head toward Vesper… making her completely exposed!

I froze.
Ivy chokes back a sob. While Lila whispers, "No, no, no, no— not again— THIS isn't part of the dream—"
I wanna tell her to drop that. Dream of her and focus right now... But then the monster took one heavy step toward Vesper.
THUD.

The ground cracks beneath every step as it begins to charge.
And I—
I don't even... Know...
I think...
My legs then move before my brain does, I grab Ivy tighter to my chest. And lock my other hand around Lila's wrist.

And I ran.
Straight toward Vesper. Wait no that's too dumb...
I then changed my mind and sprinted toward the shattered entrance of the CU store, still half-carrying Ivy as Lila struggled to keep up.
Glass crunched under my feet. Inside, the shelves were collapsed, lights flickering weakly. I gently set Ivy down behind the counter and looked Lila straight in the eyes.
"Take care of her for a bit," I said, firm, steady, even though my chest was tightening. But at least lila swallowed hard but nodded. "O-Okay…"
As I turned back toward the parking lot, ivy grip my hand. "D-dad! Don't go." Sure... I wanna stay but... Yeah vesper will die. Then she let out a sob. "Please... You promised that you won't leave me alone."
I patted ivy head, "Yes, yes, I'm not gonna leave you alone I will just save vesper, don't you want that?" but before ivy could respond, I heard a Massive Thud. I turned around toward Vesper anda beast to see the beast crouch low, muscles tensing, ready to lunge straight at her.
I gently pushed ivy arms, and stand outside.
Vesper stood yards away, alone, breath shaky. "I attempted to transport all of us," she called out in that formal tone, "yet my feeble reservoir of mana barely permitted myself."
"Okay! Okay! Just... Don't do anything," I yelled back.
"Okay" she responded. But the beast didn't care about our yelling. And it was seconds away from ripping her apart.
Then— my eyes caught something on the cracked pavement.
The eggs...
The pack of eggs Ivy was supposed to be holding… lying there, miraculously intact. But then my body moved before I even finished thinking.
I grabbed the carton, yoink it off the ground, and... "HEY!!!" I shouted and threw it at the beast.
It... It didn't Reach the beast... Vesper and the beast stared at me... Like they're laughing from the inside... I then threw another egg but this time with all my might. Thank god. The eggs curve... through the air and smashed right across the hybrid wolf-dragon's snout.
It froze... Then slowly... very slowly... its head turned toward me. Those eyes. All of those eyes... locked into mine. And I felt it— the full, crushing weight of its aggression shifting, toward me.
Its entire body pivot toward me, claws scraping thru asphalt, now facing me. And... I just know that im it's target...
I then stared at the night sky and Admired it... Then a single tear rolled down on my check.
Why... Why did I do in my past life to be this unlucky... Was it all the karma that my past body accumulated?
Then, the System appeared, right above my head.
