Chapter 37 - Chapter 37: Departure and Arrival

The morning of her departure arrived with the kind of crisp clarity that made everything feel significant. Aiko stood in her small apartment above Mrs. Sato's salon, surrounded by two suitcases that somehow contained everything she would need for the next six months in Spain. The room that had been her sanctuary for over a year looked oddly empty now, as if it were already preparing for her absence.

"Are you sure you have everything?" Mrs. Sato asked from the doorway, her voice carrying the kind of maternal concern that Aiko had never experienced from her actual family.

"I think so," Aiko replied, running through her mental checklist one more time. Professional tools, traditional Japanese hair ornaments to share with Spanish classmates, her portfolio of work, and carefully researched notes about Spanish hairstyling culture. But most importantly, tucked safely in her carry-on bag, she had copies of everything she'd been able to find about cycling groups that had visited Japan three years ago.

"Remember," Mrs. Sato said, moving into the room to help with the final suitcase, "you're going to Spain to learn and grow as a stylist. Everything else—whatever you find or don't find—is secondary to that goal."

"I know," Aiko said, though they both understood that her search for Javier was far from secondary in her heart. "But Mrs. Sato, what if I do find him? What if he's really there?"

The elderly woman studied Aiko's face with the same careful attention she gave to analyzing hair before a complex styling procedure. "Then you'll deal with that situation when it arises. But don't let the search overshadow the education you've worked so hard to achieve."

The ride to the airport was quiet, with Mrs. Sato driving and Aiko watching the familiar streets of her neighborhood pass by, wondering when she would see them again. At the departure gate, their goodbye was brief but emotional.

"Make me proud," Mrs. Sato said, embracing Aiko tightly. "Though you've already done that a hundred times over."

"I'll write every week," Aiko promised. "And I'll bring back everything I learn."

"Bring back yourself, enhanced by new knowledge and experiences. That's all I ask."

The flight to Madrid was Aiko's first time leaving Japan, and she spent most of the journey pressed against the window, watching landscapes change as they crossed continents. With each passing hour, the reality of what she was undertaking became more vivid. She was traveling halfway around the world to study in a language she was still learning, in pursuit of both academic excellence and personal answers that might not even exist.

Madrid's Barajas Airport was overwhelming—massive, bustling with international travelers, filled with rapid Spanish conversations that her classroom studies hadn't quite prepared her for. As she navigated through customs and baggage claim, Aiko felt the first real waves of culture shock hitting her.

"Aiko Matsumoto?" A voice called out in accented English as she emerged into the arrivals area.

She turned to see a woman in her fifties holding a sign with her name, wearing the kind of effortlessly elegant clothing that seemed to characterize every Spanish woman Aiko had observed since landing.

"Sí, soy Aiko," she replied in careful Spanish.

"¡Perfecto! I am Carmen Morales, your host mother. Welcome to Spain, mi niña." Carmen's embrace was warm and immediate, the kind of physical affection that still felt foreign to Aiko after years of emotional distance from her aunt's family.

The drive through Madrid to Carmen's neighborhood was a sensory overload. The architecture was unlike anything Aiko had seen—grand buildings with ornate balconies, tree-lined boulevards, plazas where people gathered even in the middle of a weekday afternoon. The light was different too, golden and warm in a way that made everything seem more vivid.

"Your Spanish is very good," Carmen said as they navigated through traffic. "But don't worry about being perfect. My family will help you practice, and Spanish people are very patient with students who are trying to learn."

Carmen's apartment was in a traditional building in the Malasaña district, with high ceilings, tile floors, and windows that opened onto a small balcony overlooking a busy street. Aiko's room was simple but comfortable, with a desk positioned near the window where she could study while watching Spanish life unfold below.

"Tonight, you rest and adjust," Carmen said, showing her where everything was located. "Tomorrow, I will take you to the Instituto Superior de Belleza so you can meet your instructors and other international students."

That evening, Aiko sat on her small balcony with a cup of tea, listening to the sounds of Madrid settling into evening. Somewhere in this city, or perhaps in another Spanish city, there might be answers to questions she'd been carrying for three years. But Mrs. Sato's words echoed in her mind—she was here primarily to learn and grow as a professional.

Her phone buzzed with messages from home. Yuki and Kenta had sent good luck wishes, along with pictures of their latest class projects. Hiroshi's message was longer and more personal: "I know you're going to do incredible things in Spain. Follow your heart, but don't forget that you have people here who care about your happiness and your safety. I'm proud of you for taking this leap."

As she prepared for bed in her new Spanish home, Aiko felt a mixture of excitement and anxiety that seemed entirely appropriate for the magnitude of what lay ahead. Tomorrow, she would begin her formal studies at one of Europe's most prestigious hairstyling institutes. She would immerse herself in Spanish culture and techniques that could transform her understanding of her craft.

And perhaps, if she was very fortunate, she would find answers to the questions that had driven her halfway around the world.

The search for Javier would begin in earnest soon. But tonight, she was simply Aiko Matsumoto, international student in Madrid, preparing to embrace whatever discoveries lay ahead.

The adventure she had worked so hard to achieve was finally beginning.
