Chapter 34: The Devil in Hell's Kitchen
Matt Murdock.
The name itself carried weight in New York's legal circles. A blind lawyer with a reputation for defending the defenseless, Matt was respected not just for his skill, but for his relentless pursuit of justice.
Kim admired him deeply. To her, he represented everything she aspired to be—principled, unshaken by corruption, and willing to take on cases that others were too afraid to touch.
So when Karen mentioned she worked at Nelson & Murdock as his secretary, Kim's eyes lit up with genuine happiness for her friend.
Karen, however, didn't share the same sentiment. She swirled her drink idly, her expression somewhere between frustration and longing.
Unlike Kim, she didn't dream of the law. For Karen Page, the law firm was just a stepping stone. What she truly wanted was Hollywood—fame, cameras, red carpets, and the glittering life of a starlet.
"Being Matt's secretary pays the bills," she confessed. "But my real goal is to break into acting. You'll see—I'll make it big one day."
Kim bit her lip, holding back a sigh. She knew the reality. Hollywood was cutthroat—overflowing with dreamers, each willing to sacrifice everything just for a single line in a forgettable show. Beauty wasn't enough. Talent wasn't enough. More often than not, it ended with broken hearts, broken bank accounts, and broken spirits.
But she said nothing. Some truths couldn't be forced on others. Karen would only understand when she faced the harshness herself.
By the time Tommy returned from his stroll around the bar, Karen Page had already left, leaving Kim alone with her thoughts. Her shoulders slumped, and her expression was tinged with sadness.
"Your friend's gone?" Tommy asked casually, sliding into his seat.
Kim quickly masked her emotions with a polite smile. "Yeah. We just caught up on life. Nothing much."
She hesitated, then added, "Oh, by the way, Boss—you know Karen's working as Matt Murdock's secretary now? He's kind of a big deal here. A great defense lawyer in Hell's Kitchen."
She went on to explain Matt's reputation, assuming Tommy, fresh from Italy, wouldn't know him.
But Tommy's sharp gaze betrayed recognition. Of course he knew. Matt Murdock by day, Daredevil by night. A man who wore justice like armor—and spandex like a second skin.
"Matt Murdock…" Tommy muttered under his breath. "Didn't think I'd hear that name here."
To him, Daredevil was nothing more than another wildcard in the city. As long as Murdock didn't interfere with his business, Tommy couldn't care less about the so-called Devil of Hell's Kitchen.
They didn't linger much longer. After paying the tab, Tommy and Kim stepped back into the chilly night and returned to the modest apartment in their black Prius.
Kim collapsed onto the sofa, utterly drained from the day's work. Within minutes, she was asleep, her breathing soft and steady.
Tommy, however, had no intention of resting.
He unlatched his suitcase. Inside, neatly arranged, were the tools of his next step:
A Glock 34 pistol, freshly cleaned, magazine full.
And a black Continental Hotel bulletproof suit—tailored, elegant, and reinforced with cutting-edge fibers. It wasn't Vibranium, but it was damn close.
He ran his hand over the fabric, noting its weight. It wouldn't stop the pain of a bullet's impact, but it would keep him alive. And that was all that mattered.
Tommy smirked. "Now that's more like it."
Compared to the revolver he had when he first arrived in this world, tonight's arsenal made him feel like a professional. His mysterious employer had thought of everything—offense and defense, carefully balanced.
"Not bad," Tommy muttered, holstering the Glock.
The hunt was about to begin.
