A couple of days later, Asher and Erica walked to school together. He'd asked everyone not to tell Erica what had happened that night—he didn't want to worry her unnecessarily.
"Hey, Asher…" Erica murmured, snuggling up to his arm. "We still have an hour before school starts, so why don't we—"
She didn't finish. Asher flicked her on the head.
"You pervert. Are you sure you're a werewolf and not a succubus?" he teased.
She leaned close, whispering in his ear, her warm breath brushing his skin. "For you, I am…"
Asher chuckled and moved her gently aside. "Glad to see your wolfy confidence is back, at least."
Erica puffed her cheeks cutely, then walked ahead, swaying her hips. Asher smiled. He knew she was trying her hardest to look strong for him. Over the past few days, he'd been tending to her after that epileptic attack, and she hadn't wanted him to see her worry.
Both of them were pretending to be strong so the other wouldn't worry.
When they arrived at school, Asher spotted Scott. His expression was a mixture of anger and sadness—though sadness won out. The anger was because tonight was the full moon. Strangely, Erica didn't seem affected at all. Maybe female werewolves had more control… though running a hand over the scars on his upper body reminded him that maybe that wasn't the case.
"Hey, Scott," Asher said, greeting him and Stiles. "Stiles."
"Hi…" Scott replied briefly, his eyes flicking with barely-contained emotion.
Stiles gave Asher a look that screamed, the situation is bad… really, really bad.
"Erica, mind getting ahead?" Asher asked.
"Sure…" she said, grabbing his collar and pulling his face to hers. The kiss was rough, demanding, before she pulled away. "See you later," she called over her shoulder.
Stiles sighed. "Why am I the only one without a girlfriend—"
Then he remembered Scott. "Ah, right… Scott's with me now. Back to being the single buddies—"
Scott's glare was enough to shut him up immediately.
Asher rested a hand on Scott's shoulder. "Come on, Scott… don't give it too much weight. You're gonna take her back, right?"
The bell rang.
"Yes… you're right," Scott said, eyes almost like possessed. "I'm gonna take her back."
And with that, he started heading to class.
...
Scott entered the classroom just as the bell rang. Today was chemistry test day. His eyes immediately found Allison's desk. She glanced up at him, awkward, avoiding his gaze.
"McCall… stop bothering Ms. Argent and sit down," Mr. Harris barked from behind. Scott frowned but complied, making his way to the back of the room, Stiles and Asher following.
Mr. Harris began distributing the tests.
"You have forty-five minutes to complete the test," he said, once every student had a sheet. "And remember—writing your name on the test automatically gives you twenty-five percent of your final grade."
A few students scribbled their names immediately.
"Though, as happens every year," Mr. Harris continued, "someone inexplicably won't write their name, and I will spend entire hours interrogating myself about why I chose to become a teacher." He shook his head in mock despair.
Mr. Harris set the timer.
"I'm ready to face this delusion," he said quietly, pressing the start button.
A minute passed. Asher already had the test completed. He glanced over it, a faint smirk on his lips. School had always come easily to him; once he read something, he understood it immediately. Studying was practically useless—he absorbed everything in seconds. He leaned back, ready to hand in his test.
Then he saw Scott.
Scott was standing, zipping his backpack with surprising speed, and heading straight for the door.
"McCall?!" Mr. Harris called after him, startled.
Stiles immediately jumped up, dashing after his friend. "Stilinski?!" he shouted.
Asher, pausing only for a heartbeat, grabbed his test and backpack and hurried after them.
"Even you, Sable?!" Mr. Harris exclaimed, exasperation dripping from his voice as Asher left the test on his desk.
The classroom was left in sudden, confused silence as the three boys disappeared into the hall, the chemistry test forgotten for the moment.
To be continued...
