I shot my way through three different story limits to reach them, and arrived just as something called the Compliance was about to steal their will to fight.
My name is Alex Martinez, and I used to be the protagonist of a dystopian series about overthrowing an oppressive government. Used to be, because I refused to follow the script that said I had to sacrifice myself heroically in the final fight.
Instead, I escaped my story completely.
"Get down!" I shouted, raising the weapon I'd stolen from my narrative's armory. It wasn't just a gun - it was a plot device intended to kill predetermined endings.
The Compliance stopped in its approach, its waves of artificial contentment flickering as my weapon disrupted its narrative field.
"Who are you?" the one called Kira asked, shadow-walking closer despite the risk.
