Chapter 66 - Chapter 66 – Shadows in the Tunnels

The hidden panel creaked ominously as it swung open, unveiling a narrow passage carved into the ancient stone, which led to a dark and damp corridor that exuded an unsettling chill. A cold draft rushed out, laden with the earthy scent of damp soil and the metallic tang of rust. Tristan's firm grip tugged me through the yawning entrance, and he slammed the panel shut just as the thunderous footfalls reverberated against the wooden floor of the study behind us.

The tunnel enveloped us like a living creature, swallowing any trace of light. A solitary emergency lamp cast a feeble glow, its flickering light feebly against the jagged walls, creating an unsettling dance of shadows. My heart raced in my chest, each pulse echoing in my ears as if announcing our presence to anyone, or anything that lay in wait.

"Stay quiet," Tristan whispered, his grip on my hand like iron, unwavering and protective.

In front of us, Edward moved with a predatory grace, as though he had traversed this maze countless times before. His gun was drawn, every sense alert and poised. Yet behind us, the faint scrape of stone reverberated, sending a cold twist of dread through my stomach.

We weren't alone.

-

The tunnels were supposed to be our sanctuary, the last refuge in this relentless nightmare, but the ominous sounds behind us told a starkly different story. The bastards knew that we were here.

I tightened my grip on Ellie, instinctively pulling her ahead, positioning her between Edward and me, like a fragile barrier against the encroaching danger. It's always a gamble in our line of duty, but it felt like the only option we had at this moment.

The passage ahead forked ominously, and Edward raised two fingers, signalling left. My instincts screamed for me to scan to the right with every muscle taut with tension. The shadows danced unsettlingly, and before I could process the growing threat,

"Down!" I shouted, thrusting Ellie firmly against the damp stone wall as gunfire erupted.

The tunnel detonated with sound, echoes crashing around us like thunder. Bullets ricocheted off the stone walls, sending sparks flaring into the darkness. Ellie gasped but miraculously held back the scream that threatened to escape her lips.

She was brave, too damn brave.

I retaliated, firing back with quick, precise shots that covered Edward as he moved forward. The shadows shifted, and I took out one threat, only for another figure to lunge from the depths, a knife gleaming menacingly in the dim light.

Before I could react, Ellie surged into action.

-

I could feel the instinct driving me, and it was all I had in that moment.

The man charged toward Tristan, blade raised high, ready to strike. Without waiting for a second thought, I snatched a loose piece of broken pipe from the cold, damp ground and swung with every ounce of strength I could muster.

The sickening crack of metal slamming against bone reverberated through the tunnel. He collapsed, the knife clattering away, lost in the darkness. My chest heaved heavily with my breath coming in ragged gasps, my arms trembling with adrenaline, but I refused to falter.

Tristan's gaze snapped toward me, a storm of fury and fear blazing in his eyes, but this time he didn't shout or pull me back, instead, he reached for the fallen knife, flipped it deftly in his hand, and pressed it back into mine with palpable intensity.

"Keep it," he growled, his voice low and fierce. "And you are not allowed to hesitate again."

-

A wave of protectiveness surged through me. I wanted nothing more than to shelter her from this chaos, to lock her away in safety, but Ellie had crossed a line, and she stood unbroken, defiant in the face of danger.

Gunfire ebbed for a moment, but the echoes of boots still pursued us, growing nearer with each passing second. Edward barked over his shoulder, urgency lacing his tone, "Move! They'll corner us if we stall."

I pulled Ellie forward, adrenaline coursing through my veins like wildfire. Every step deeper into the stony maze felt like a descent into a lion's den, dark, perilous, and alive with feral energy.

Yet, with her by my side, and the knife gripped tightly in her trembling hand, I realised now that Ellie Everett wasn't simply surviving this ordeal. She was evolving, metamorphosing into something beautiful and formidable.
