Chapter 144 - In Front of Evil

When the whole place was functioning and a group of people were watching over the surroundings of the safe area, Brad looked at Priest Jonathan sitting on the sofa, then his eyes fixed on that weapon that had the name Devastator of Evil Spirits. He pulled Drew, who was next to him, and whispered, "What is it that you all talked about earlier? Don't play with me, tell me."

Drew looked at the police officer with confusion in his eyes. "What did I say?"

"I remember you mentioned to me that evil spirits can't be killed with weapons, but have you looked at what those people have in their hands?" Brad pointed with his gaze at the shotguns of both Priests who had remained silent all this time.

Drew was also confused by this, even Ed and Lorraine didn't have a convincing explanation for it, but neither of them denied that Jonathan truly had ability, therefore he didn't know what to say about it. "They aren't normal Priests of the Christian church. If you look at those golden books, you'll notice that they're not actually fixed to a single belief. It may have something to do with the Church of Healing."

When Drew said these words, he inevitably looked once more at Ed and Lorraine, who had not stepped aside, so he whispered to them: "Sir Ed, who exactly is Priest Jonathan and his assistants? Are they really Priests?"

Ed and Lorraine looked at each other. They knew much more about the Church of Healing because they were the ones who had taken charge of paranormal cases in place of the church as it used to be. No one knew exactly why the Church of Healing took the majority of the cases, but each of its members was absolutely professional regardless of their methods.

"I made a call to the church to confirm, and it's true that Mr. Jonathan has jurisdiction over this whole area. He is the one who handles Exorcism cases and paranormal rumors here. Rest assured that no matter what you see, Priest Jonathan has the abilities to take charge. We're lucky to have him because he is a Belmont, a family that once hunted mythological monsters and is now among the highest-ranked hunters in the world."

Drew asked, surprised, "Mr. Jonathan comes from an influential family?"

In his thoughts, the Warrens had so much experience in paranormal cases that normally the procedure was to call the church so they would send a Priest who would take charge of things that couldn't be resolved. For such an extravagant Priest like Jonathan to arrive as quickly as possible meant things were truly very serious.

Lorraine nodded and said, "You may only be related to the paranormal world, but out there they say that werewolves, vampires, goblins, beings so incredibly magical that they can exterminate hundreds of people before the Association of Light even notices their existence—those all exist."

Hearing these words, everyone who had been immersed in anxiety became very confused by what Lorraine had said.

At that moment, Jonathan was looking outside, wondering how long it would take for night to fall.

It had already been late when they arrived, but after focusing on preparing this place, the light outside had turned into an orange sunset.

At this moment, the sun was giving off its last rays of light.

"Everything will start in about half an hour…" Jonathan narrowed his eyes and looked around seriously. Everything was silent and there was no movement at all, but he could feel the resentment growing stronger as time passed. He could even feel that the Spirits here did not welcome him or Doug, who was closer to the safe zone.

As Jonathan walked, he soon sat down again, but at that moment he felt someone touch his back, so he turned around and saw a little girl looking at him with curiosity. It was Judy: "Can she die?"

Jonathan knew there was no need to lie to this girl who had previously been in contact with the supernatural and nodded lightly. "The damage can be severe, and if I don't control it, she must die."

"Hey! Judy…" Ed called to his daughter from the side, afraid she would bother the priest who had asked for silence, but Jonathan gave him a look telling him not to say anything.

Seeing Judy so calm, Jonathan motioned for her to come closer and said quietly, "Do you really want to do the work your mother does?"

Jonathan was aware that some evil spirits were dead souls of normal people and had no harmful intentions. As for harassment, it could be due to their instinct to appear in front of humans. However, dead souls were not humans after all, and being able to retain some consciousness was considered dangerous. As for dead souls who retained full consciousness and had intelligence, he had not seen any yet.

Hearing Jonathan's question, the girl seemed to be thinking deeply, but then nodded seriously.

"Um, but much better, I can see everything just like she says she sees!"

"Have you seen anything that could help me?" Jonathan asked, trying to learn more.

Judy nodded again and asked, "But you still need to answer my question. Are cursed spirits really bad?"

As soon as these words came out, the Warrens behind her carefully watched for any reaction from Jonathan.

Jonathan looked at them and remembered that it was suspected that the child following Beth in the photo was the ghost of the boy who mysteriously disappeared, so he thought and answered seriously, "No, I will only give him eternal rest so he can be happy."

In the end, his job was also to relieve the resentment of the evil spirits who had been affected by the living. The resentment sometimes became so strong that they had to intervene and cleanse it. Unlike demons that came from hell, evil spirits were only pieces of resentment left behind in life.

Little Christine didn't understand; she only blinked, looking at the adults in front of her. For her, as long as her friend wasn't hurt, that was fine.

"Now go with your parents and don't leave their side, go on."

Little Christine, who had received a satisfactory answer, nodded obediently and ran to where her parents were. Carolyn hugged her and regretted that her family had to go through all this.

This scene happened before Jonathan's eyes, making him feel that he was doing his job well if it was for people like them.

As the sky darkened and the temperature dropped, the resentment in the house grew stronger.

It was then that evil spirits were at their strongest. But stimulated by a large amount of holy water and crosses, these evil spirits felt threatened.

Naturally, evil hates anything related to good, especially evil spirits like Bathsheba.

When Jonathan stood up, Doug followed, and this caught everyone's attention.

Ed was the first to speak. "Priest Jonathan, do you need my help?"

Jonathan held his shotgun in his right hand and shook his head as he left the safe zone. "You all take care of your daughter, we'll handle this."

Ed unconsciously looked at his daughter and then nodded. Professional matters must be resolved by professionals. He also knew his own abilities. If the priest couldn't resolve it, he wouldn't be able to help at all.

Jonathan turned his gaze to Officer Brad, who stood up. Under normal circumstances, the police help Exorcist Priests, so he asked, "Brad, you know how to use a shotgun, right?"

Hearing this, Brad's eyes lit up and he nodded seriously. "I can definitely shoot!"

Jonathan pointed at a backpack and said, "Stay behind us and shoot where we shoot. Cover our backs, and if you see something move, shoot without hesitation."

Although the help might not make a big difference, Jonathan wanted at least someone to witness what he and Doug would do in the house, so he called the police officer who was directly under his orders.

This also made Jonathan feel it was a pity. It would be perfect if anyone could face entities that only Exorcist Priests could see.

"If necessary, fire into the air based on your intuition."

Brad tightly gripped the shotgun and said seriously, "This is my thing, Priest Jonathan!"

Jonathan nodded and then lowered his gaze from everyone as he headed toward the side of the stairs.

According to the Roger family's account, this was the place where the mother died. The basement was obviously a place where a certain medium could be activated.

Following the path beside the stairs to the end, Jonathan stopped at the door on the right.

In the quiet space, a creaking sound was heard and, when the small door opened, a coldness and a rotten smell reached Jonathan's senses.

In the dimness, Jonathan rubbed his nose and looked at the stairs that descended to the bottom of the basement. He hung a cross on the small door and went down first, followed by Doug, who didn't hesitate to go down.

"May God protect us…" Brad murmured as he also went down.

"He won't protect you, you must fight your own battles." Wednesday coldly looked at the meddling police officer, someone who shouldn't be here, and entered the basement.

"And who the hell is she?"
