Chapter 51 - The Small Achievements

Smoke hung heavy above the ruins of the casino, drifting like gray ghosts through the broken beams and cracked stone. Raven stood where the flames still hissed against damp ash, brushing soot from her cloak while Gato knelt before her. His breath came in wheezing gasps, and the three dead jōnin around them still steamed from chakra burns, their armor half-melted into their skin. The world around them was quiet except for the faint crackle of dying fire.

Raven looked down at him. "You've told me enough about Orochimaru and Danzo. Now listen carefully. I'm going to tell you what happens next."

Gato's mouth quivered. "I-I'm listening."

"From this moment on, Gato no longer exists," she said. "You will vanish from public life. You'll let the world believe you burned to death in this fire. Your accounts will remain, your companies will continue, but no one will ever see your face again."

He stared at her in disbelief. "And if I don't?"

Raven's eyes glowed faintly violet. "You will. The seal on your chest ensures it."

She began pacing around him, the heels of her boots crunching over shattered glass. "You'll rebuild your networks quietly—ports, smuggling routes, weapons trades—but you'll redirect their purpose. From now on you recruit for me. Find female shinobi with power and broken loyalties. Missing-nin, mercenaries, wanderers. When you locate someone promising, you send word through the seal. I'll decide who's worthy to serve me directly in the Land of Whirlpools."

Gato wiped the sweat from his brow with shaking fingers. "You're serious. You mean to restore that wasteland? You have no idea who will come after you for even trying it."

Raven stopped pacing and looked over her shoulder. "You underestimate the enemies you've already angered, Gato. You think small—slave ships, narcotics, black markets—but your greed has fueled half the wars in this continent. Every famine, every rebellion, every collapsed village has men like you behind it, feeding both sides for profit."

He shook his head violently. "No, that's absurd. I'm a businessman, not some warlord pulling strings."

Raven crouched in front of him until her face was inches from his. "You're a pawn who mistook himself for a player. I'm offering you a promotion." Her tone softened into something almost kind. "You'll still be corrupt, still ruthless—but this time, your corruption will serve a purpose."

He swallowed hard. "You talk like there's some invisible hand running everything."

"There is," she replied. "The same one that destroyed the Uzumaki and the Senju, that used you to fund its laboratories and armies. Someone has spent decades shaping the world for collapse. I intend to reshape it before they do."

Gato's throat worked as he whispered, "And if I fail you?"

Raven's chakra flared, filling the air with invisible pressure that bent the drifting smoke. "Then your pain will be legendary."

The warning hung between them like thunder. He nodded so quickly his hair plastered to his forehead.

"Good," she said, the tension vanishing from her voice. From inside her cloak she withdrew a small black card etched with spiraling red lines. "This is keyed to the mark on your body. Channel chakra into it to report or receive orders. The seal also lets me track your position and, if I choose, control your movements. Don't bother testing it."

Gato reached out hesitantly and took the card, sliding it into his jacket with trembling hands. "Understood… Lady Raven."

Raven inclined her head. "Disappear. Make me wealthy."

He stumbled to his feet and fled into the smoke-choked streets, the faint glow of the obedience seal pulsing once beneath his collar before fading.

Yumi padded over the rubble, tails flicking lazily. "Aren't you worried he'll run?"

Raven watched the direction he'd gone, expression calm. "He can't. The tracker's woven into the seal. I can sense him anywhere. Later, when my Rinnegan matures, I'll communicate through it directly. No more shadow-clone messengers. Maybe I'll use animals—ravens, snakes, something poetic as puppets to cominicate amd fight for me."

"Efficient," Yumi said. "Disturbing, but efficient."

Raven turned her gaze toward the sea. "We're done here. Time to return to Konoha."

They walked together through the burned streets until the last of the firelight fell behind them. Yumi leapt to Raven's shoulder, curling around her neck like living silk. "You've done a lot for a toddler," she murmured. "You cured Tsunade's phobia, turned Mei Terumī into an ally, saved the bloodline children, and now you've enslaved the richest man in the world. That's quite a week."

Raven gave a small, tired laugh. "A start, nothing more."

"Relax," Yumi teased. "You've got decades before the Fourth Great War even begins."

Raven's eyes hardened. "Decades? I don't intend to wait that long. There are things moving now—Mikoto Uchiha, her husband, their sons. If history repeats itself, the world burns again. I need to intercept that future before it forms."

Yumi tilted her head. "And what will you do with Mikoto?"

Raven's voice softened, almost fond. "Oh, nothing yet. I just look forward to seeing her face when she learns I'm alive."

"That sounds exactly like trouble."

Raven smiled faintly, her expression hidden as she pulled her hood up. "Of course it is."
