"Oh, Ashley, I'm so happy to see you again," Annabel Thorne greeted the red-haired lady with a rare genuine affection in her voice.
'Thank you for having me here at such a short notice," the was-to-be-daughter-in-law embraced James' mother.
The two women got along very well. They always did.
And the unsuccessful scheme of Annabel to marry her son off to her favorite 'candidates' didn't ruin their relationship even after three years had passed.
"Please take a seat," Annabel invited and Ashley followed.
The table was laid out for a high tea. Ashley's favorite scones and desserts were well remembered and thoughtfully prepared.
Mrs. Thorne started to speak as she poured tea for Ashley.
"I'm terribly sorry about what happened - and what is happening now."
For Annabel, the apology was more important than a superficial 'How are you?' at this point.
