"You certainly enjoy having your fun, young Lucifuge," a man's voice, smooth and amused, said from beside me. "You have caused quite a commotion."
I pulled my eyes away from my mother, who was now smiling and talking with Sirzechs. I turned to look at the man who had come up to me.
He had neat brown hair and golden eyes. Deep inside those eyes, I could see the curious spark of a researcher.
It was Zaorom Nebiros, the leader of one of the Six Great Houses. He was wearing a fancy black and white uniform, and he looked very, very bored.
"Lord Flerity accidentally choked on his wine," I said, my face perfectly straight. "I was simply enjoying a conversation with him at that unlucky moment."
"The wine must have been very strong then," Zaorom said, a small smile playing on his lips, "for him to grab his own neck so tightly, as if his life was about to end."
"It seems that drinking too much can kill even demons," I replied, matching his tone. "Shall we drink to his health?"
"Ha ha," he laughed. The sparks in his eyes grew brighter.
He took a glass of wine from a nearby table that I offered him, while I took a glass filled with fruit juice.
My mother, who had spent a lot of time in the human world, did not like it when I drank alcohol, which could sometimes be a problem.
"I thought the meeting with my father and the other house leaders would take longer," I said, changing the subject. "Or did you decide to move it to a later time?"
"It is already over," he said with a small shrug. "Even though we are called the 'Great' Six Houses of Lucifer, and your father is considered our leader, we have very little to do with each other. We don't have many shared interests. In reality, we are all strangers to one another. We just happen to serve the same family, and we protect each other when there is a risk of losing our own power. Because of that, we have almost nothing to talk about."
"You are very open about that," I noted. "Wouldn't that hurt the reputation of the Six Houses if someone heard you say that?"
"I don't care much about that, or about my own reputation among the other demons, as long as it doesn't get in the way of my research," he said. "I thought you were the same, since you don't even try to take the position of heir from your brother."
He nodded his head toward Euclis, who was talking to the only two other children our age at the party. I had already said hello to them to be polite, but I had no desire to talk to children who were so obviously trying to get on the good side of the future leader of the House of Lucifuge.
"My father does not like having me around," I explained. "And my special family power is different from his. Because of that, my father would rather find a new wife and have another child with her than agree to make me the heir of the House."
"Does that make you sad?" he asked, his golden eyes watching me closely.
"Lord Nebiros, you are very curious about me, even though you have a reputation for being a loner who is not interested in anything but his strange research."
"Did I not say this when we first met?" he said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "I am interested in demons who have great potential or power, those who are not ordinary. And to study them better, I need more information about them, including their personalities."
"You may not have the crazy amount of power that the Gremory heir or the candidates for the new Ruler titles have, but you are very different from the other noble demons."
"A new family power, new knowledge, a talent for fighting that not every demon can achieve in a hundred years, and a mind that can understand my research at such a young age. How could a specimen like you not interest me?"
He leaned in closer, his golden eyes staring at me as if he wanted to see my very soul. Then, I imagined, he would want to cut open my body to make sure his ideas were correct.
I took a sip of my juice, sadly remembering the ten-thousand-year-old dragon wine I used to drink after big victories. I took one step back from the demon, who had gotten too close in his excitement.
"I am grateful for the compliments," I said, "but I will not be lowering the prices for the medicines and stimulants I supply. Also, would you mind moving back a little? Otherwise, new, unpleasant rumors might start."
The man blinked, looking confused. "Unpleasant rumors?"
"About your love for little boys," I said in a matter-of-fact tone. "In demon society, it is true that people make contracts with sodomites for profit, but such interests are not approved of among our own kind, as it has a negative effect on the overall population of our race."
"I…"
"The head of the House of Nebiros, who usually never leaves his lands, has started to visit the younger son of Rofocale Lucifuge often and for long periods of time," I continued, laying out the story.
"Because of this, a misunderstanding has arisen among those who have found out about it. It is not in my best interest for this misunderstanding to grow, because I am one of the people involved in it."
"I-I have no sexual interest in males," he stammered. "My interest in your body is purely for research purposes…"
"I do not doubt that, but you should be telling that to the others," I said. "Let's discuss the nature of family powers or some other topic another time, as we are attracting attention. Now, if you will allow me, I will leave."
Zaorom Nebiros froze, a look of awkwardness flashing across his face as he glanced at the other people in the room, who were now looking in our direction.
I guess the head of the House of Nebiros really didn't care much about what was happening in society, if he believed the nonsense I had just said.
He was, of course, an interesting person to talk to when it came to magical oddities and the bodies of living things, but sometimes he could be quite rude, asking uncomfortable questions that were dangerous to answer in the middle of a crowd.
Demons were well-known for their sneaky plots and their ability to use carelessly spoken words against the person who said them.
I kept a blank look on my face and walked toward my mother, planning to spend the rest of the party near her. Inside my body, my spiritual energy was flowing as usual. I was constantly pushing it to move faster to train and strengthen my body.
In the months since I had fixed my Spiritual Root, I had managed to go from the fifth to the ninth level of the Qi Gathering stage, but I still hadn't met the right conditions to move on to the next stage in a smooth and balanced way.
"…I hear your choir is getting more and more popular lately, Sirzechs," my mother was saying as I got closer. "Some people have even started to think about starting choirs in their own lands."
