Nevaeh turned her head and glared at Noreen. "Idiot! The water has already reached the glass and the door won't open. If you keep talking, we're going to drown here!"
The word "drown" shut Noreen up instantly. Her face went white. She yanked off her high heels and shoved them at Nevaeh.
Nevaeh hammered the heel against the top corner of the glass. She focused every ounce of strength and after a few hard knocks, the glass cracked with a loud crash. Relief tore through her chest.
She smashed a hole big enough and water rushed in.
When the inside and outside water levels evened out, Nevaeh pried the door open. She took a breath and let the current pull her out. She was about to call for Noreen to follow when a hand grabbed her neck from behind. The world tilted. Nevaeh lost her balance and went under, choking on a mouthful of river water.
But Noreen didn't care. She clung to Nevaeh's neck like a drowning animal, screaming, "Don't you dare leave me! If I die, you die too!"
