Chapter 17 - Chapter 17 – A Year of Waiting

The morning sunlight streamed through the window, but Ann's mind was elsewhere. She sat at her study table, textbooks open, notes scattered around her. The thought of Dennis—his hand in hers during the engagement, his soft whispers, his gentle eyes—made her smile unconsciously.

Her mother peeked in, noticing the dreamy expression. "Ann, are you studying or daydreaming again?"

Ann giggled. "A little of both, Ma. I can't help it… I keep thinking about Dennis."

Her mother smiled knowingly. "It's good that you're focused on your studies too. You'll have plenty of time for him once your exams are over and the wedding is near."

Ann's POV

Even though we're engaged, I know Dennis and I need to be patient. A year feels long, but I also know it's for the best. My studies matter, and he respects that.

Dennis's visits were the highlight of her weeks. Every Friday evening, he would arrive with a small bouquet or a box of sweets, sometimes just to sit and talk. They shared their dreams, little jokes, and sometimes, silence that felt comfortable rather than awkward.

One evening, Dennis leaned on the balcony railing beside her, watching the fields glow orange under the sunset. "I can't wait for the day we finally call each other husband and wife," he said softly.

Ann rested her head on his shoulder. "A year seems long sometimes. But then I think about how much I'll learn, how much I'll grow, and I feel it's worth waiting for."

He kissed her hair gently. "Every day we wait, every day we're apart… it's all just preparing us for the life we'll have together. And I'll be there, every step of the way, cheering for you, loving you, supporting you."

They laughed as Jacob barged onto the balcony, waving a hand. "You two are so obvious! Some privacy, please?"

Dennis chuckled and ruffled Jacob's hair playfully. "Some things are worth being obvious about."

Even during their small arguments—over minor misunderstandings or Ann's stubborn focus on her studies—they learned to communicate, to compromise, to listen. Each conflict ended in a laugh or a quiet apology whispered at night.

Dennis's POV

She's incredible—so determined, so kind, so patient. This year isn't just a wait; it's a chance to understand her, to build a foundation that will last a lifetime. Every visit, every talk, every shared meal… I cherish it all.

Festivals came and went, and Dennis always found a way to be part of them—helping decorate for Diwali, carrying Ann's books during Holi, or simply walking her home under a cool winter night. Each moment, however ordinary, became extraordinary in the glow of their love.

Finally, the last week of the engagement year arrived. Ann packed her books into her bag one evening, glancing at Dennis. "I can't believe it's almost time. One more week, and I'll officially be your wife."

He held her hands tightly, looking deep into her eyes. "I've waited for this year with patience, but it's flown by because of you. I'm ready, Ann. Ready for every morning and night, every laugh and every challenge… with you."

Ann's POV

I feel a mixture of excitement and nervousness. This year taught me patience, understanding, and how love can grow even in waiting. I'm ready too, ready to begin the next chapter with him by my side.

As they stood together, hand in hand, the sky painted in twilight shades, they didn't need words. Their hearts spoke clearly—about love, commitment, and the promise of a lifetime together.
