Standing before the house of his childhood, Cheng Xiao's heart swelled with emotion. The door was open, and white smoke floated out, indicating that someone was cooking.
He quickly stepped inside. Everything seemed unchanged. The old man was at the stove preparing dinner, and he looked up in surprise as someone entered.
"小… Xiao?" Despite not having seen his grandson for many years, the old man immediately recognized him.
Cheng Xiao felt a rush of emotion. Instinctively, he rubbed his tearful eyes and forced a smile. "Grandpa, it's me. I'm back."
"Good, good, you're back," the trembling voice said. The old man hurried forward.
He reached out his aged hands to gently touch Cheng Xiao's face, his eyes full of concern. Muttering, he said, "You've lost weight. Have you suffered too much out there?"
"No, not at all," Cheng Xiao said, his voice slightly choked as tears welled up.
At that moment, the old man noticed a young lady standing behind Cheng Xiao and paused, puzzled. "Xiao, who is this?"
"Grandpa, hello. I'm Cheng Xiao's friend. My name is Ye Lingling," she said with a smile.
"Ye Lingling—a lovely name," the old man said, genuinely smiling. Then he asked, "You must be hungry after just returning to the village?"
"Xiao, you go inside and let Lingling wait a moment. Grandpa will make you both something to eat," he said, ushering them in. Meanwhile, he skillfully returned to the stove to cook.
"Grandpa, I'm not a child anymore. Let me help," Cheng Xiao said with a wry smile, stepping forward.
But the old man refused firmly. In his generation, if a child traveled so far just to come home, it was already a huge effort. He wanted Cheng Xiao to rest, and in his view, he was still capable enough to cook himself.
Cheng Xiao could only stand by to lend a hand without letting his grandfather overexert himself.
Soon, the two of them had prepared a table full of dishes. Though simple home-cooked meals, they were delicious and full of flavor.
As they ate and chatted, the aroma teased their shadow soldiers into craving a taste.
During the meal, Cheng Xiao told his grandfather about his cultivation progress over the years and the interesting events he had experienced—careful to leave out anything that might worry him.
When his grandfather learned that Cheng Xiao had reached the Soul Sect level, his face lit up with pride. "You little rascal, you've made your grandpa proud."
After the meal, Cheng Xiao and Ye Lingling tidied the dishes and took out the jade-green pill from Dugu Bo, smiling. "Grandpa, this pill was given to me by a friend. After taking it, it should extend your life by five years."
"Five years?" The old man was stunned for a moment, then waved his hand jokingly. "I'm already halfway to the grave. Five more years won't change much."
"You don't need anything else. Just stay well, and come visit more often," Cheng Xiao said.
"Grandpa, you should accept it," Ye Lingling added, placing the pill in his hand. "Cheng Xiao is still counting on you to spend more time with him."
"Grandpa, Lingling's right. You've been waiting for me to marry and have children, haven't you? You need to live a few more years, or you won't get to see your grandson," Cheng Xiao said with a smile.
"Alright then," the old man finally relented and took the pill from Ye Lingling.
Following Cheng Xiao's instructions, he swallowed the pill.
The moment it dissolved, he felt rejuvenated, as if he had returned to a few years ago when he had endless energy to care for Cheng Xiao.
Seeing this, Cheng Xiao and Ye Lingling smiled in satisfaction.
"It's late. Xiao, Lingling, you should sleep in the main room—it's spacious. I'll take the small room," the old man said, preparing bedding for them.
Since the house was at the foot of a mountain, it got cold at night. Although Cheng Xiao and Ye Lingling were soul masters and not afraid of cold, their grandfather still prepared a warm firebed for them.
"Grandpa, you should take the main room. The small room is cold," Cheng Xiao suggested.
"Yes, Grandpa, we can sleep in the small room. We're soul masters and not easily cold," Ye Lingling added.
Sighing, the old man said, "You two kids are really something. Fine, you sleep in the small room. I'll make sure the fire keeps it warm."
With that, he stepped outside to chop firewood.
Cheng Xiao and Ye Lingling exchanged a glance and smiled, then laid out the bedding in the small room.
Though called the "small room," it was just smaller and seldom used, so it was cold.
Once the firebed was lit, the old man reminded them not to get cold and returned to his own room.
Cheng Xiao and Ye Lingling lay together on the firebed. Because it wasn't very big, only a small gap separated them through the bedding.
Feeling the warmth from the bed, Cheng Xiao looked at the worn ceiling and said apologetically, "Lingling, sorry."
"Sorry for what?" Ye Lingling turned her head to look at him with a gentle smile. "Are you worried I'll dislike the place for being small?"
"Something like that," Cheng Xiao rubbed his nose and looked at her. "After living at the academy, this must feel pretty humble."
"It's fine. I actually think it's nice," she said with a bright smile.
"Really? You're not just saying that to comfort me?" Cheng Xiao asked.
"I'm not comforting you," Ye Lingling said, turning her face. "I just think you've worked hard. Growing up in a place like this, even entering the Soul Master Academy would be tough."
"Hard to imagine how much effort it took for you to reach where you are today," she continued.
"Perhaps. But now, I only think about making life better for the people I care about and those who care about me. That's all," she said softly.
"It will happen. If it's you, I believe it will," Cheng Xiao said.
