In the suitcase world, inside the alchemy workshop.
A sleek piece of alchemical equipment rested quietly on its metal stand atop the workbench, outer runes drifting in slow, faint pulses of light.
Lucien straightened after slotting in the final component and rolled his stiff neck with a quiet crack.
He was getting ready to refine a simplified version of the Philosopher's Stone.
Obviously he wasn't about to do it here in the suitcase or back at the manor—Lucien had no desire to find out what happened when a half-finished stone decided to throw a tantrum and take the whole place with it.
He'd already picked out a handful of remote islands for the job—proper nowhere places where even the birds stayed away. Worst-case scenario, the only thing getting vaporized would be a few square miles of empty rock.
During the break he pulled up the system panel.
Ever since the upgrade had put the system into sleep mode, the interface had gone a washed-out gray, like someone had thrown a thin veil over it.
Before it shut down, the system had promised existing loan progress would keep tracking in real time.
His eyes moved to the Jade Record fragment line. Repayment sat at one hundred percent.
The loan entry itself, however, still hadn't cleared.

"Bug, maybe?" Lucien muttered, turning a small metal fitting between his fingers. "Waiwai? Tongzi? You awake in there?"

He'd only asked on a whim. Actually getting an answer back caught him off guard.
Lucien blinked. "That fast? I figured you'd be out at least a year—maybe six months."
It hadn't even been a full month.

He shoved the sappy line aside and went straight to checking what had actually changed.
The interface looked mostly the same at first glance. He scrolled through it quickly.
The biggest update was in the loan categories. Two new tiers had been added: Quarterly Loan (three months / 90 days) and Half-Year Loan (six months / 180 days).
Lucien tapped his fingers on the workbench, thinking it over. Solid improvement.
It added some much-needed granularity—two extra steps between the monthly and yearly options. More variety, better pacing.
He'd always felt the jump from monthly to yearly loans was too wide. These new brackets filled the gap nicely.
Repayment difficulty and deadlines mattered, sure, but the real value was in the loan content itself.
With his strength climbing and his knowledge base growing, the old monthly loans had started feeling a little light. Only the rare title loans or the ones that completed proper sets still got his full attention.
He rubbed his thumb across his fingertips. "All right, show me what you've got lined up."

The system sounded properly lively again—exactly the way it used to be.
Right before the upgrade sleep it had gone all sluggish: slow replies, fewer daily triggers, the whole thing feeling half-asleep.
Now that it was back, loan triggers should be returning to normal frequency.
Lucien still had a couple of specific loans he kept circling back to—especially the elemental magic patterns and the full Plague Doctor set.
Who could resist finishing a complete collection?
He scrolled through the list at a steady pace, names flicking past.
Then he caught it.
A single icon glowed with a soft cyan light.
