Chapter 2 - Chapter Three – Broken Vows

Elena

"You can't be serious, Elena." Lucy stood in the doorway of her tiny bathroom, watching me apply lipstick with shaking hands. "Please tell me you're not doing what I think you're doing."

I caught her eyes in the cracked mirror. The woman staring back at me looked hollow, desperate, nothing like the confident wife I used to be. But I'd spent the last three days thinking, and this was my only chance.

"The Reynolds Corporation gala is tonight," I said, smoothing down the black dress I'd salvaged from my old wardrobe. It was two years old, slightly loose now from the weight I'd lost since my world collapsed, but it was the only formal dress I owned that still fit. "Adrian will be there. All the major investors, board members, everyone who matters to his business."

"Elena, no." Lucy's voice was sharp. "You saw those divorce papers. You know what kind of man he's become. Going there will only make things worse."

"How could they possibly get worse?" I turned to face her, and I saw my own desperation reflected in her worried eyes. "He has my children, Lucy. Daniel won't even talk to me on the phone. Sophie cries every night asking when we're going home. The twins don't even know where their mommy went."

"So what's your plan? Storm into his fancy party and cause a scene?"

"My plan is to remind him of who we used to be." I picked up the small velvet box from the bathroom counter, my wedding ring. I'd taken it off the night he threw me out, but tonight, I was putting it back on. "Before the money, before the power went to his head, before Vanessa. He loved me once, Lucy. Really loved me."

"People change, Elena. And from what you've told me, Adrian has changed into someone who doesn't deserve you."

"Maybe. But I have to try." I slipped the ring onto my finger, and it felt foreign now, like it belonged to someone else. "I have to know I did everything possible to save my marriage, to keep my family together."

Lucy sighed, recognizing the stubborn set to my jaw. "Then at least let me drive you. I'll wait outside."

"No." I grabbed my small purse, one of the few designer pieces I'd managed to pack. "I need to do this alone."

The Grand Metropolitan Hotel ballroom was exactly as I remembered from years of attending these events as Adrian's wife. Crystal chandeliers cast everything in golden light, servers moved gracefully between clusters of the city's elite, and the air buzzed with the sound of deals being made over champagne and caviar.

For eight years, I'd belonged here. These people had known me, respected me as Mrs. Adrian Cole. Now, standing in the doorway in my old dress with my discount store shoes, I felt like an imposter.

"Elena?"

I turned to see Margaret Reynolds, wife of Adrian's biggest client, approaching with surprise written across her botoxed features.

"Margaret, hello." I forced a smile, grateful that at least one person was acknowledging me. "Lovely event, as always."

"I... Well, yes." Margaret's eyes darted around nervously. "Elena, dear, I'm not sure you should be here. Given the circumstances..."

"What circumstances?" I kept my voice steady, though my heart was racing.

"Well, the separation. And Adrian's announcement about.." She stopped abruptly, her face flushing. "Oh, dear. You don't know."

Before I could ask what she meant, a hush fell over the crowd near the main entrance. I turned and felt my blood freeze.

Adrian stood in the doorway like a king holding court, devastatingly handsome in his perfectly tailored tuxedo. His hair was styled immaculately, his smile confident and charming as he worked the room. But it wasn't Adrian who made my heart stop.

It was the woman on his arm.

Vanessa looked like something out of a magazine. Her red dress hugged every curve, her blonde hair fell in perfect waves over her shoulders, and diamonds, diamonds that should have been mine, sparkled at her throat and ears. She moved with the confidence of a woman who knew she was the most beautiful person in the room.

And everyone was staring at them like they were royalty.

"Oh, honey," Margaret whispered beside me, her voice full of pity. "You really didn't know."

I watched in horror as Adrian leaned down to whisper something in Vanessa's ear, making her laugh that musical laugh I'd heard before, in his office, over his desk, while my marriage died.

"Know what?" My voice came out as a croak.

"The engagement announcement. It's why he called this gala, actually. He's going to announce their engagement tonight."

The words hit me like a truck. Engagement. While our divorce wasn't even final. While our children were still asking when Mommy was coming home.

I started moving toward them before I realized what I was doing. The crowd seemed to part around me, conversations stopping as people recognized me. I heard whispers following in my wake:

"Is that Elena Cole?"

"I thought they were separated."

"What is she doing here?"

"This is awkward."

Adrian saw me coming. I watched his face change from surprise to annoyance to something that looked almost like disgust. Vanessa followed his gaze and her red lips curved into a satisfied smile.

"Adrian." I stopped in front of them, my voice carrying in the sudden quiet around us. "We need to talk."

"Elena." His voice was cold, professional. "I wasn't expecting you."

"Clearly." I looked at Vanessa, then back at him. "Can we speak privately? Please?"

"Whatever you have to say, you can say it here." Adrian's arm tightened around Vanessa's waist possessively. "Vanessa and I have no secrets."

The humiliation burned, but I pushed forward. "Adrian, please. Think about what you're doing. Think about our children. They need their family together."

"Our children are fine," he said dismissively. "They're adapting beautifully to their new reality."

"New reality?" My voice rose despite my efforts to stay calm. "You mean the reality where their father has abandoned them for his secretary?"

Gasps rippled through the crowd around us. Someone's phone camera flashed. This was becoming exactly what Lucy had warned me about, but I couldn't stop now.

"I haven't abandoned anyone," Adrian said, his voice deadly quiet. "I've simply chosen to surround myself with people who bring value to my life."

"Value?" The word came out as a bitter laugh. "What value am I lacking, Adrian? The fact that I gave birth to your children? That I supported your career for eight years? That I loved you when you had nothing?"

"The fact that you've become irrelevant." His words cut through the murmur of the crowd like a blade. "Look around you, Elena. This is my world. These are my peers. Can you honestly tell me you belong here anymore?"

I looked around at the faces staring at us, some pitying, some embarrassed, some openly fascinated by the drama unfolding before them. In my old dress and desperate expression, I suddenly saw myself as they must see me: the discarded wife, pathetic and grasping.

"I belonged here as your wife," I whispered. "I belonged here as the mother of your children."

"You belonged here when you were useful to me," Adrian corrected cruelly. "When you could hold an intelligent conversation, when you cared about more than playground schedules and diaper changes. When you were someone worth standing beside."

He pulled Vanessa closer, and she practically purred with satisfaction.

"This," he said, gesturing to Vanessa like she was a prize he'd won, "is the woman worthy of standing beside me. Not you."

The words landed like physical blows. Around us, the crowd shifted uncomfortably, but no one intervened. No one defended me. These people who had smiled at me for years, who had eaten at my table and praised my hosting skills, now watched my public humiliation like it was dinner theater.

Camera flashes went off around us. I could see reporters in the crowd now, scribbling notes, capturing every moment of my devastation for tomorrow's headlines.

"You're making a mistake," I said, my voice breaking. "Our children will never forgive you for this."

"Our children will understand that their father chose happiness over settling for mediocrity." Adrian's smile was sharp as a knife. "Now, if you'll excuse us, Vanessa and I have an announcement to make."

He guided Vanessa toward the small stage at the front of the ballroom, leaving me standing alone in the center of the crowd. The whispers grew louder:

"Did you see her face?"

"How embarrassing."

"I can't believe she came here."

"Poor things have no dignity left."

I wanted to run, but my legs felt like lead. I watched through a haze of tears as Adrian took the microphone, his arm still around Vanessa.

"Ladies and gentlemen," his voice boomed through the sound system, "thank you all for being here tonight. Vanessa and I wanted to share some wonderful news with all of you..."

I couldn't listen anymore. Somehow, I found the strength to move, pushing through the crowd toward the exit as Adrian's voice continued behind me, announcing his engagement to the woman who had destroyed my marriage.

The hotel lobby was a blur as I stumbled through it. The doorman gave me a pitying look as I waited for a taxi, and I realized I must look as broken as I felt.

The ride back to Lucy's apartment passed in a fog. I stared out the window at the city lights, thinking about how many times I'd driven these same streets with Adrian, heading home from events just like this one. Back when I mattered. Back when I was someone.

Lucy was waiting up for me, one look at my face telling her everything she needed to know.

"Oh, Elena," she whispered, wrapping me in her arms as I finally broke down completely.

I cried until there were no tears left, until my chest ached and my head pounded. Lucy helped me to the air mattress in the corner that had become my bed, but sleep wouldn't come.

At 3 AM, I heard Lucy's phone buzz. Then again. And again.

"Elena," she said softly, "I think you need to see this."

She handed me her phone, and I saw the headline that would haunt me for months to come:

"THE BILLIONAIRE'S PLAIN WIFE REPLACED: Adrian Cole's Public Humiliation of Ex Shocks Elite Gala"

Below it was a photo of me, tears streaming down my face, while Adrian and Vanessa looked on with barely concealed contempt.

The article was worse:

"In a shocking display at last night's Reynolds Corporation gala, billionaire Adrian Cole publicly humiliated his estranged wife Elena in front of the city's elite before announcing his engagement to stunning secretary Vanessa King. Witnesses described the scene as 'uncomfortable' and 'painful to watch' as the discarded wife begged for reconciliation..."

There were more photos. So many photos. Me crying. Me standing alone while people whispered. Me fleeing the ballroom like a wounded animal.

My private heartbreak had become public entertainment.

"Elena, breathe," Lucy was saying, but her voice seemed to come from very far away.

The pain in my chest was getting worse. Sharp, stabbing pain that made it hard to breathe. The room spun around me as I tried to sit up.

"I can't... I can't breathe," I gasped, clutching at my chest.

"Elena!" Lucy's voice was panicking now. "Elena, talk to me!"

But the darkness was closing in, and the last thing I remembered was wondering if this was how it ended. If the pain of losing everything—my husband, my children, my dignity was finally too much for my heart to bear.

Maybe it would be easier this way. Maybe I wouldn't have to wake up tomorrow and face a world where I was nothing more than a discarded wife
