Chapter 2 - Does the Grail War Start?

Rin Tohsaka didn't exactly have the most dignified of mornings.

The alarm rang. She slammed it with the force of a Noble Phantasm, groaning as the hour finally sank in. With all the grace of a so-called elegant lady, she leapt out of bed and rushed through her routine.

Wash face. Eat a lonely breakfast. Fix hair into her usual twin-tails. Get dressed for school. Grab her bag.

She sighed on her way out the door, last night's events still gnawing at her thoughts.

After years of waiting, she had finally opened the box her father had left behind for her. Inside were a few trinkets: a small heart-shaped necklace, a curious scrap of snake skin, and notes written in his familiar hand.

But the one thing that made her freeze was the catalyst — the snake skin. Clearly meant for a Servant summoning.

And then there was the note.

"Rin, don't open this unless it's another Grail War. And don't get ahead of yourself — you're still a child."

If you asked Rin how she reacted, she would say she received it with poise, grace, and the seriousness befitting the heir of the Tohsaka family.

In reality, she screamed into her pillow for ten minutes straight.

After a few minutes of yelling into her Pillow, she took a deep breath, muttered a prayer that was through to her, to control her anger.

Then went to sleep, what she didn't know all that the alarm clocks in her house had been moved by an Hour.

So here she was, now going to school, as she was wondering why there were no Students on the road. Once she arrived at School, she met with Ayako, and she asked the girl for the time.

Only to realize she was 1 hour early, deciding to make the most of it, she decided to go to the Archery side. She had a few chats and then came in, Mash. After talking to Ayaka, she walked past the girl, but she had a guilty look. Ayako and Mash chatted.

She did notice Ayako was a bit tired, and wondered why that was the chase. As she walked away, as he moved, she saw someone.

"You're Early today, Tosaka".

She looked up to see a white-haired boy with messy hair, who was wearing the Same Boys' uniform from their school.

His yellow eyes met hers as he walked down. This was the Student Council President and one of Ritsuka's friends

[Insert Image Of Kadoc]

And another Mage, he was not part of the war, Rin had cornered him, which left a bad taste in the white hair boy's, as he looked at her

Rin blinked at him, caught off guard. "Kadoc? What are you doing here so early?"

He gave her a flat look, adjusting the strap of his school bag. "Same as you, I guess. Except I didn't scream into my pillow all night before remembering to set my clocks right."

Rin froze. "...How do you—"

"I'm a magus. And you're you," Kadoc muttered, running a hand through his messy white hair. "Half the school probably heard you from across the district."

Her cheeks burned red as she crossed her arms, glaring. "I'll have you know, it's unbecoming to mock the Tohsaka heir."

"Relax, I'm not mocking. Just... stating facts." He sighed, yellow eyes flicking past her toward the archery range where Ayako and Mash were still talking. "Besides... you've got bigger things to worry about than me."

For a moment, Rin thought she caught something in his tone. Not pity exactly, but knowledge.

She narrowed her eyes. "What do you know?"

Kadoc's lips curved into something like a smirk, though his voice stayed tired. "More than you'd like. Less than you think. That's the job description for people like me, isn't it?"

And with that, he moved past her, hands in his pockets.

Rin sighed as she remembered why the Boy was so hostile and so snarky with her.

Flashback

The rooftop wind whipped Rin's twin-tails as she planted her hands on her hips, eyes blazing with righteous fury. She had cornered him — Kadoc Zemlupus, the lethargic, white-haired Student Council President who always looked half-asleep in class.

"Don't play dumb with me," she snapped, stomping forward. "I know you're a magus. And let me make something clear: I won't lose to another mage like you in the Holy Grail War!"

Her words echoed across the empty rooftop, her pride swelling in her chest.

But Kadoc only blinked at her. Then—he laughed. Not cruelly, but dryly, like her declaration wasn't worth taking seriously.

"Grail War? As if." He lifted his right hand and rolled back his sleeve. His skin was pale, unmarked—completely bare of the crimson seals she expected to see.

"Do you see any Command Spells?" he asked, voice flat, tinged with a bitter amusement. "My family wouldn't be caught dead in that mess. The Holy Grail War is a blood circus for lunatics desperate to prove themselves. Zemlupuses don't waste their lives chasing fairy tales."

Rin's mouth opened, then shut. She felt heat rising in her cheeks, but forced her chin higher. "...Then why—"

"Maybe you'd realize things faster if you weren't so high up on that Tohsaka pedestal," Kadoc cut her off, his yellow eyes sharp for once, not dull. "Didn't your dear old dad teach you anything?"

The words stung like a slap.

Rin froze, unable to retort. And Kadoc, clearly done, shoved his hands into his pockets and walked away.

End of Flashback

Rin pinched the bridge of her nose, exhaling through her teeth. Just remembering that rooftop encounter left a sour taste in her mouth. Kadoc always knew how to drag her pride through the mud.

"Why did I even waste my breath on him…" she muttered, shaking her head as she descended the stairwell.

And then, as if fate itself wanted to add insult to injury—

"Oh, Emiya."

She froze, her eyes narrowing before she even turned.

Ritsuka was coming up the stairs two steps at a time, casual as ever, his black hair slightly messy, school bag slung carelessly over his shoulder. He didn't look tired, didn't look rushed—just irritatingly calm.

"Morning," he said with that faint grin, like he'd already guessed she'd overslept.

Rin forced a polite smile that was more teeth than warmth. "…Morning."

Her inner thoughts, however, screamed: Of all the people I could have run into right now, it had to be him.

The day passed without much incident. Classes blurred together, lunch came and went, and by the time Rin walked back through the empty halls of her home, the sun was already beginning to set.

She slipped off her shoes, dropped her bag onto the couch, and was about to head upstairs when the blinking red light on the landline caught her eye.

Rin froze. Unlisted?

She pressed play.

A mechanical chime rang out first, followed by the detached voice of the machine:

> "You have one unlisted voice message from January 31st at 3:33 PM."

Then the real voice began.

It was flat—calm and cold, with the practiced control of a priest. But Rin heard it: the faint warmth at the edges, the subtle inflection that made the voice more human than it should have been. She knew that voice.

> "Rin, it's me. I would like to remind you that the deadline to enter the Holy Grail War is tomorrow. With the Master of Archer already accepted, there are now two spots left—Caster and Saber. I would like to know if you intend to take part or not. If not, the Church will extend its protection to you during the War.

> Also…" a faint pause, almost casual, "…don't miss Sunday service. It's not like you've missed a day before."

Click.

The message ended.

Rin let out a long breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding, her fist tightening at her side.j

So the deadline was here. And with Archer's Master already confirmed, the choices were running thin. If she didn't summon tonight or tomorrow, the chance would be gone.

She glanced at the snake-skin catalyst still sitting in her father's old box, its sheen almost mocking her hesitation.

"…Looks like it's tonight, then."

Later that night, the Tohsaka manor was alive with prana.

Rin stood within the summoning circle of her family, gemstones glittering in the lines of the ritual. The air was heavy, thick with magic.

"Two A.M.," she whispered to herself, steadying her nerves. The hour of my strongest alignment. Even without a proper catalyst, I should be able to call Saber…

Her eyes went to the fossilized snakeskin in the box. Her lips pressed into a thin line.

"…Not exactly standard for a Saber catalyst. But it is what Father left behind."

Her mind raced. Serpents and swords… Yamato Takeru came to mind. Maybe even something more divine, though she dared not hope.

Rin laid it down, took a breath, and began the chant.

Light bloomed. Wind howled through the chamber, the force of prana threatening to blow her off her feet. The circle flared—then exploded outward in a violent rush of dust and power.

When it cleared, Rin's eyes darted to her hand.

The Command Spells burned fresh and red against her skin.

She gasped. "I… did it! I'm a Master—!"

But then she blinked. The summoning chamber was empty.

"…Where's my Servant?"

Her heart skipped. Did I fail? Did I botch the time? Then her eyes went wide. The clocks—!

Before she could spiral further, a loud crash echoed upstairs.

Rin bolted from the basement, racing up the steps two at a time until she burst into her living room—

—and froze.

A man was sprawled comfortably on her couch, sipping wine from a golden chalice. The faint glow of magic lingered around him, one of her father's grimoires already open in his hand.

His hair gleamed like sunlight, his crimson eyes sharp and arrogant. Regal attire draped across his frame like it had been tailored by kings themselves.

[Insert image of Caster Gilgamesh]

He glanced at her, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.

"So," he drawled, "this age still hasn't learned to handle its toys properly. A child pries open the First Serpent's remains, and who else but I should answer?"

He swirled the chalice lazily before smirking wider. "Of all my incarnations, mongrel, you managed to summon the best. Consider yourself fortunate."

Rin stood there, dumbfounded. "…Are you my Servant?"

The man's smile sharpened.

"Rejoice, mongrel. I have deemed your roof… sufficient."

Rin blinked twice, her lips parting slightly as she tried to process what she was seeing. "…Are you Saber?"

Gilgamesh leaned back deeper into her couch, swirling the wine in his chalice with casual disdain. His smirk widened, like a cat toying with prey.

"One of my many classes, yes," he said, his tone dripping with arrogance. "But this time, little girl, I am summoned as Caster. You should consider yourself fortunate—this age has nothing else that even approaches my majesty."

Rin pinched the bridge of her nose, exhaling through clenched teeth. She refused to rise to his bait. "…At least tell me your name."

Gilgamesh chuckled, the sound low and amused. "My name, you wish to know that?"

"Yes," Rin snapped, though she forced her voice into something resembling calm. "Your true name, Caster."

The King of Heroes tilted his chalice, golden eyes gleaming with mischief. "Very well. Remember it well, mongrel. I am Gilgamesh—the King of Uruk."

The name hit her like a lightning strike. Rin froze, her breath catching as her brain scrambled to process. Slowly, almost mechanically, her head turned toward him where he lounged like he owned her living room.

"G-Gilgamesh," she stammered. "Gilgamesh… as in Gilgamesh—the King of Heroes, the First Hero, the one from the Epic!? I… I summoned him?!"

Her voice cracked between disbelief and horror. Meanwhile, Gilgamesh only looked amused, as if her shock were nothing more than proper tribute.

"Of all the mongrels who might have tugged at my soul," he said lazily, "it seems you were chosen to bask in my presence. Rejoice, girl—you have summoned the pinnacle of mankind."

Gilgamesh smirked at her stunned expression, raising his chalice in mock salute.

"If you don't believe me, then confirm it with your own eyes. You can, can't you? With those so-called Master's eyes, is that what they call it?"

Rin's throat felt dry. Her fingers twitched as she channeled mana into her sight, her vision sharpening as glowing text scrolled faintly across Gilgamesh's form. The results almost made her stomach drop.

Class: Caster

True Name: Gilgamesh

Title: King of Uruk, The First Hero, The King of Heroes

Strength: B

Endurance: B

Agility: B+

Mana: A+++

Luck: A+

Noble Phantasm: EX

Rin nearly choked on her own breath. A… A+++ Mana? EX Noble Phantasm!? No way, that's… that's broken!

Gilgamesh leaned forward just slightly, watching the color drain from her face with the satisfaction of a predator savoring the kill.

"Now you see. Even as Caster, I am unrivaled. A true king's brilliance cannot be dimmed by trivialities like 'class containers.'"

Rin quickly cut off her mage-sight, clutching her arms around herself as though that might protect her sanity. "T-This is impossible… I was aiming for Saber! How in the world did you of all people—!?"

Gilgamesh laughed, a deep, resonant sound that filled the room like mocking thunder.

"Fate itself bends before me. Consider it your good fortune, girl, that I answered your little ritual. You may yet live long enough to be amusing."

Rin shoved the broom and dusting cloth into his hands, her smile sharp and just a little too sweet.

"Well then, Caster. Since you're a king, and since you already destroyed one of my rooms during your oh-so-grand entrance, don't you think a true king should take responsibility for his servant's quarters? You know—fix the mess you made?"

For a moment, Gilgamesh blinked at the mundane objects in his grasp. Then his shoulders began to shake, and he threw his head back in booming laughter.

"Hah! How utterly amusing!" he roared, red eyes alight with wicked delight. "A child dares command me to wield a broom? To think I would meet a Master with enough backbone to bare her teeth at the King of Heroes!"

He tossed the broom onto the couch with theatrical disdain, still grinning as he leaned forward.

"Very well, Rin Tohsaka. You are not without spirit. I shall listen to your prattle… a little. But do not mistake this for obedience."

Rin folded her arms, tapping her foot. "Fine by me. As long as you're not wrecking every room in my house."

Gilgamesh smirked wider, lifting his chalice again. "Hmph. Then amuse me, girl. Endure my majesty without crumbling, and perhaps I shall allow your little wish upon the Grail."
