Chapter 123 - The War of Attrition

The blue beam shooting up from the rooftop of Stark Tower pierced straight into the sky as the long-awaited Chitauri army swarmed out of the wormhole.

Everything on the ground was a target for them to destroy—everywhere they passed, only ruins remained, not a single survivor.

The first to rush in to help were not the Avengers, nor the Demon King's retainers or troops, but the street-level heroes who had always lived in New York.

Led by Matt, the Defenders were the first to stand up, fighting off the Chitauri soldiers while rescuing trapped civilians.

"Jessica! Fly up there and get the people still in the office buildings. Danny, Elektra! You two handle the civilians on the ground," Matt said, ears twitching as he assessed the situation and issued the most optimal orders.

Although Matt had never accepted Stick's request to lead the Chaste, Stick didn't misjudge him—Matt indeed had the qualities of a leader.

After Jessica and the others took off, Matt turned to Luke beside him.

"The two of us stay on the ground and draw their fire."

"I'm fine with that. But you?" Luke Cage didn't feel secure with Matt's human body being exposed like this.

"Don't worry. This is the best plan right now." Matt gave a carefree smile, then turned to Frank. "Frank, do whatever you want today. I won't say a thing."

"Heh~ just what I wanted! I'm gonna kill every last one of these alien scumbags!" Frank lifted his sniper rifle, a huge bag of weapons clattering on his back as he ran into a nearby building.

Matt didn't join the rescue team but chose to stay on the ground with Luke as bait—this was deliberate.

The battlefield noise was overwhelming; Matt had to limit his movement to a small radius. And nothing was safer than staying close to allies.

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

Whoosh!

Within moments, Matt and Cage were surrounded by Chitauri soldiers, energy beams firing at them from every direction.

Luke Cage roared and charged straight through the barrage, ripping a car door off and slamming it into several Chitauri soldiers.

Those unfortunate enough to be struck died instantly, creating a gap in their formation.

Matt slipped in through the gap right behind Luke, twirling his batons. Every strike carried lethal intent—no mercy for these alien monsters.

Luke, meanwhile, picked up one of the Chitauri spear-like energy rifles and simply stood there, trading shots with them.

I can kill you. But you can't kill me.

Jessica flew back and forth between the ground and the skyscrapers, carrying trapped civilians down to Danny and Elektra.

But there were far too many trapped people—no matter how many trips she made, the number barely seemed to decrease.

Just as Jessica was getting anxious, Peter swung in on his webs."Do you guys need help?"

"Spider-Man? Finally! Help me rescue people!" Jessica almost praised the heavens.

With Peter assisting, the high-altitude rescue work sped up significantly. Even if some clueless Chitauri soldiers tried to interfere, facing two super-strength humanoids meant only death.

And while these young street heroes were busy saving civilians, the Avengers finally entered the battlefield.

Tony, the first Avenger to reach New York, returned to Stark Tower and carefully soothed Loki while secretly slipping on the Mark VII summoning bracelet.

Caught off guard, Loki was blasted away by the Mark VII's palm cannon the moment it assembled around Tony. If the Leviathan war beast hadn't appeared, Tony would've continued chasing him.

"Cap, are you seeing this?" Tony hovered mid-air, staring in shock at the colossal creature flying in the sky.

Steve and the others on the ground also saw the giant. He surveyed the battlefield and issued orders:

"Tony, the skies are yours. Hawkeye, take high ground. Natasha, find Loki. Thor, summon more lightning. Doctor Banner, you—?"

Banner grinned and walked toward the Leviathan. "Here's a secret—I'm always angry."

"Raaahhhh!!!"

"HULK!!! SMASH!!!"

Boom!

Boom!

Boom!

Watching the Hulk unleash his fury, Steve and the others strangely felt relieved."Avengers—assemble!"

Tony flew beside a Leviathan, raised the laser weapon on his right arm, and fired—but Jarvis poured cold water on him.

"Sir, energy will deplete before penetrating the armor."

"Then what do I do?" Tony felt helpless.

A buzzing sound drew his attention toward the glass wall of the tower."Oh, it's the thing I hate most. But you're right on time."

Two Musou Dragons burst through the glass, soaring at the Leviathan. Although tiny compared to the Leviathan's massive body, the dragons could easily play the role of bone-gnawing worms.

Terrifying dragonfire erupted inside the creature, roasting the Chitauri soldiers alive before the dragons devoured them whole.

Tormented, the Leviathan wailed miserably and collapsed from the sky, never to rise again.

The Musou Dragon burst out of the Leviathan's corpse and instantly sought its next target. As it flew past Tony, it even made a very human-like mocking face.

"Jarvis… did a robot dragon just mock me?" Tony blinked in disbelief.

"Facial analysis: 87% match," Jarvis reported after actually analyzing the dragon's expression.

"Alright, enough analysis. Let's get back to work!"

"Yes, sir."

...

The battle in New York ignited a sense of justice in many people. The rescue teams were not just the Defenders and Peter—more and more people joined in on their own initiative.

Even Dr. Connors, hiding in the sewers with his conscience still intact, wanted to help—but his body belonged to the Lizard, not Connors.

"Damn it!"

Though Connors' green form didn't appear on the ground, many other green silhouettes did.

Twenty unmanned Melon Armors created by Professor Ryoma leapt from the Delanlong Castle, charging fiercely at the Chitauri.

With finger-mounted machine guns and dual blade edges, they tore through the Chitauri ranks. Some Melon Armors even transformed into giant rolling melons, flattening enemies as they went.

Woz and the others each controlled a Time Majin, hunting down the scattered Leviathans. After all, unless individual combat power surpassed a certain threshold, they were useless on a battlefield like this.

Zade looked up at the endless flood of Chitauri pouring in and sighed. Movies really couldn't compare to the brutality of a real battlefield. Good thing he'd built an army—otherwise he might genuinely be drowned by these aliens.

Tokiwa Sougo raised his belt and turned to Zade.

"That 'god' who wants to rule humanity—where is he? I want to play with him."
