Jean-Claude, formerly a French Security Bureau agent, was a top-tier operative, capable of both combat and assassination, twenty years prior.
However, after seeing his comrades fall one by one, Jean-Claude felt there was absolutely no future in such a life.
Being a top agent seemed glamorous, but only he knew the hardships involved.
He risked his life for missions every day, yet the rewards were meager.
More importantly, his family life suffered. As an agent, he often disappeared for months on end, with no news of his whereabouts. Jean-Claude's wife had divorced him for this very reason.
After all, you never knew whether your loved one was alive or dead. Even if they died, you might not receive their death certificate for a year!
Thus, Jean-Claude chose to quit, requesting an internal transfer to a desk job within the Paris Police Department.
With his previous experience and prestige, he quickly rose to become the Deputy Director of the Paris Internal Security Bureau. Although the position wasn't high in rank, it held considerable power. Essentially, all the Petty Criminals in Paris fell under his jurisdiction.
Of course, this was limited to the lower-level gangs without any backing. The truly top-tier gangs were supported by powerful entities, and a mere Deputy Director wouldn't be enough to deal with them.
But it didn't matter. Having experienced so much life and death, Jean-Claude had no interest in punishing evil and promoting good. What he needed now was a warm family life, and maybe a little more money on the side.
As Deputy Director, he didn't need to get his hands dirty. No one dared to short him!
"Don't you know that attacking police officers is a serious crime! You're going to get yourselves into big trouble!"
Deputy Director Jean-Claude had felt something was wrong the moment he opened the door, because the house was too quiet.
His son and daughter were at that age where they were irritating to everyone. Normally, as soon as he opened the door, he would hear the children bickering and his wife getting angry.
Although this scene might seem annoying to others, Jean-Claude, who had finally returned to a normal life, enjoyed this family life very much.
So when Jean-Claude opened the door and heard nothing, he knew something was wrong. He immediately grabbed the vase by the door and held it in his hand.
He couldn't help it; he wasn't a special agent risking life and death anymore, so he didn't have a habit of carrying a gun.
At least, Paris seemed very peaceful on the surface!
He walked through the entryway into the living room and saw his wife and child bound, their mouths taped. A woman wearing a fox mask was sitting beside them, examining a silver handgun.
Jean-Claude steadied himself. Since the enemy hadn't killed his family directly, he could be sure they weren't people he'd offended in the past.
He quickly spoke, even though he knew that since the kidnappers dared to come, they wouldn't care about his identity. But some things still needed to be said.
"Director Jean-Claude, we don't know if we've caused trouble, but if you don't cooperate, your whole family will be in big trouble!" The man wearing a tiger mask sitting on the sofa spoke with a hint of mockery in his tone.
"What do you want?" Jean-Claude assessed the positions of both sides, considering the success of a surprise attack.
Bang!
Before he could even figure out how to act, a sharp gunshot rang out.
The vase he was holding behind his back had been shattered by a single shot.
"Curved Trajectory! Are you from the Brotherhood?" Jean-Claude's eyes widened. As a former senior agent of the French Security Bureau, he was naturally familiar with the unscientific shooting technique of Curved Trajectory.
The Brotherhood held a fearsome reputation in the underworld. Jean-Claude never expected to have any connection with such a legendary assassin organization.
He immediately gave a sheepish smile, behaving as obediently as a student late for class.
Reputation precedes reality. If it were just two ordinary petty criminals, Jean-Claude believed he could have turned the tables even if they held a hostage.
But since it was a top assassin from the renowned Brotherhood, he wouldn't go looking for trouble.
Jean-Claude looked at the woman who was still toying with her pistol. Wearing a fox mask and possessing such superb skills, she was likely the legendary Fire Fox, wasn't she?
As for Jean-Claude pinning the blame directly on Fire Fox, Jill claimed she knew nothing about it. She just thought the mask was fun and wore it for that reason, absolutely no other meaning!
After a peaceful and friendly conversation, Deputy Director Jean-Claude immediately wrote down the location of the Albaria Gang's lair. Although he didn't know why those Petty Criminals had provoked the Brotherhood, a group of shadow assassins, he wisely didn't ask.
The more you know, the faster you die. If the Brotherhood's killers wanted to kill someone, a mere deputy director like him wouldn't be enough.
"Eighty-seven Paradise Street. These scum actually dare to set up their base in a place like this?" Jill took off the mask, looking at the address in her hand. She felt that the gang organizations in France were even bolder than in America!
"It's normal. The smaller the gang, the more unscrupulous they are. When they get into serious business, they have to start caring about appearances!" As the saying goes, the ultimate goal of the underworld is to go legit. Small fries like the Albaria Gang could never go legit in their lifetime, so they might as well go all out and go down the dark path.
"Not easy to get in!" Li Qingyuan frowned, looking at the two burly men standing guard at the door.
With his skills, these two lackeys wouldn't be a match for him at all. But Paradise Street was a famous red-light district in Paris. There were technicians and tourists roaming around. It was really difficult to get rid of these two gatekeepers without alarming others.
"Let the old lady go down and seduce them, it'll be a piece of cake!" Jill straightened her collar, revealing a cleavage, and said.
She was already beautiful, and with the care and nourishment she'd received these past few days, she was even more radiant. If she were to get out of the car and simply beckon, she'd surely be able to blend right in.
"What are you thinking about! Even if I blew up this entire street, I wouldn't let you be taken advantage of. Stay put and don't move around!" Li Qingyuan snapped, annoyed. He wouldn't let Jill go and try to pull off some honey trap!
Even though with Jill's skills, she definitely wouldn't be at a disadvantage, he still felt like his own hat was in danger just from her being looked at too much!
"Look at how stingy you are!" Jill turned her head and chuckled softly, saying she hated it, but feeling secretly pleased.
This man, though he flirted around every day outside, was genuine with her!
