Chapter 14 - Chapter Twelve: Steel and Gold

After we finished eating and were on our way out, something happened—just like the night I was first attacked and became a werewolf. My body moved on its own. I stepped in front of my sister and crossed my arms, blocking an attack I hadn't even seen coming.

There was a sharp crack—the sound of bones breaking. Everything happened in the blink of an eye. I was about to punch the attacker when suddenly I felt myself being held back, frozen in place.

Confused, I turned and heard my sister say calmly, "Just let him be. He wasn't a threat to begin with."

A second later, I felt free again. That's when I realized—it was her. Danielle's extra ability was telekinesis, and she had been holding me still.

"But he attacked us first. He was aiming at you specifically," I protested.

Danielle sighed and shrugged. "He wants to be my boyfriend. I told him that if he wanted a chance, he at least had to beat me in a fight. Since he can't take me on directly because of my telekinesis, he tries these little ambushes instead. But no matter what, he never wins."

I looked at the man. He was clutching his broken hand—the same one he'd used to throw the punch I blocked a moment ago. His bones were already realigning, the wound regenerating. For a second, I thought it had been my arm that broke. But when I glanced down, I froze.

Instead of flesh and bone, my arms looked like they were made of steel.

Shocked, I touched my face. My whole body had turned into steel. And when I concentrated harder, my body shifted again—this time glowing gold.

Everyone stared at me in amusement. My heart raced. So it wasn't just shapeshifting faces… my extra ability also let me turn my body into metals.

Feeling a little embarrassed under their stares, I willed myself back into normal human form. "Guess people will think my ability is just… turning into steel and gold," I muttered. That was easier to explain than the whole truth.

Meanwhile, Danielle turned back to her would-be suitor, challenging him again. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the guy. If he really loved my sister, he should have known she had a strange sense of humor. Giving him a challenge she knew he could never win was her way of brushing him off.

Still, I understood why. Dealing with someone who couldn't take "no" for an answer would be exhausting for anyone.

After the man finally left, I headed home. I needed to sleep—tomorrow meant another early morning at work.
