Words shouldn't have this much power over a man like me. I've survived countless battles, endured betrayals that would break lesser men, but nothing prepared me for the casual way she delivered that blow.
Arnold had slept here sometimes.
The statement burrowed under my skin like a poison, settling deep in my bones. She'd said it without flinching, without any trace of guilt or hesitation.
Every fiber of my being wanted to tear this damned shirt from my body.
Yet I remained frozen in place. For every wave of jealous fury demanding I hurl the garment across the room, something stronger held me captive.
I refused to destroy this fragile moment.
I wouldn't give her reason to throw me out, not when she sat so near, tending to my injuries with gentle hands, not when Echo's sweet laughter drifted through these thin walls like music.
The risk was too great.
I forced the tempest down, concentrating on each breath until the storm quieted.
