Chapter 61: The Power of Origin
A few days later, Ryan returned to Pallet Town on a special Aether Foundation plane. Ryan's breeding facility had become quite famous, and the League thoughtfully built an airport and a dock to welcome visitors from all over the region.
After getting off the plane and walking for over ten minutes, Ryan returned to the ranch, where his main Pokémon were waiting to greet him. Nidoking, accompanied by Nidoqueen, rushed to Ryan, presenting two Pokémon eggs like treasures. Seeing the excited Nidoking and the blushing Nidoqueen, Ryan felt deeply overwhelmed: He's still young, why is he dealing with all this parental responsibility?
He couldn't possibly give these eggs to anyone else, unless they were someone close to him. The offspring of two exceptional Pokémon—two truly top-tier specimens. Charizard burst out of its Poké Ball and looked curiously at the two Pokémon eggs in Ryan's arms, with a touch of envy. (Ryan thought: I absolutely have to get Charizard a new Poké Ball, one that can't just burst open like that!)
Ryan rolled his eyes at Charizard. This guy was quite efficient. Not long after he and the Salazzle got together, they had produced a Pokémon egg. Ryan gave the egg directly to Lillie to raise.
After the recent Indigo League tournament, Lillie had decided on her future path. She had told Ryan that being a trainer wasn't right for her, but she also loved Pokémon, so she decided to pursue the path of a breeder. After all, Ryan had such a large breeding facility, but ultimately, he still primarily caught Pokémon himself, and most of them were free-range, without proper scientific breeding methods.
So Lillie decided to become a breeder and help Ryan in the future. To give Lillie some practice, Ryan gave her the Pokémon egg—the offspring of Charizard and Salazzle—without hesitation.
After leaving the Pokémon eggs in the care of the Hydreigon pair, he checked on the other Pokémon. They were all very strong and healthy, seemingly training on their own without Ryan's supervision. Only Florges disliked fighting and had begun to act like Ash's Bulbasaur, managing the entire estate. With its strength, no Pokémon could challenge it, and its daily life was very comfortable and peaceful.
Ryan respected Florges's wishes and had no intention of forcing it, so he let Florges live freely.
But Ryan discovered that Mewtwo wasn't there. He asked Aerodactyl, who then told him that Mewtwo had rarely returned recently, but every time it came back, its strength would increase significantly, and now it could suppress all of Ryan's Pokémon. Almost no Pokémon could survive a single move from Mewtwo.
"Father." A telepathic message came.
Ryan was still pondering about Mewtwo when it appeared before him in a flash. Mewtwo gave him a warm embrace, and Ryan sensed a hint of the aura of a legendary Pokémon emanating from Mewtwo. Combined with what Aerodactyl had said, he had his answer.
He brought the Pokémon back to his second-floor villa and pulled Mewtwo into the room. Ryan looked at the somewhat uneasy Mewtwo and said, "The other Mewtwo has been training you, hasn't it?"
"Yes, Father," Mewtwo responded telepathically. "The other Mewtwo-senpai carries much darkness in his heart. I want to slowly influence him and prevent him from making a terrible mistake."
Listening to Mewtwo's words, Ryan felt as if his child had truly grown up. He patted Mewtwo's head as it sat cross-legged on the ground and said, "Mewtwo has matured. You have your own convictions, and I won't fault you for that. Even if you wanted to leave, I wouldn't stop you. You must remember that although you are a legendary Pokémon, you are still young compared to those ancient legendaries. Be careful."
"I understand, Father," Mewtwo said. "Mewtwo-senpai hasn't done anything harmful. On the contrary, he's been training me and teaching me how to feel the power of Origin."
"Origin power?!" Ryan asked in surprise. "Can you tell me about it?"
Mewtwo nodded and shared with Ryan what he was eager to understand. After a while, Ryan fell into deep thought. According to Mewtwo, comprehending Origin power was much like understanding the fundamental laws of one's own nature, similar to cultivation concepts in fantasy stories.
For example, Ho-Oh's Sacred Fire contains the essence of rebirth within the Fire-type. Even if other Pokémon could use Sacred Fire, without that element of revival, they wouldn't be able to resurrect the three legendary beasts. Another example is Cresselia's lunar dance bringing sweet dreams, Darkrai's dark void creating nightmares, and Celebbi's time travel—these are all examples of Origin laws.
Mewtwo's Origin law is destruction—the devastating power of Psychic-type moves. This is why in the anime, after Mewtwo was created, its strength was nearly equal to that of a first-tier legendary Pokémon.
However, comprehending one's own Origin power is extremely mystical, and only Pokémon of the same species can pass down this knowledge. It's even more difficult for other species to comprehend it.
"Ding. Origin Power registered. Special Mission - train a legendary Pokémon within three years, and defeat and capture a legendary Pokémon. Rewards: 100 million diamonds, 100 million fame points, 100 million gold coins, five Master Balls, five sets of evolution stones (can be specified), and activation of the Legendary Trainer system. Penalty for failure: Deduction of 100 million diamonds, 100 million fame points, and 100 million gold coins, plus closure of the shop and lottery systems."
"Whoa. There's actually a penalty! Looks like this is a mandatory mission," Ryan gasped. "And the reward is too tempting. I absolutely have to complete it!"
That was true. But according to the system's logic, it wouldn't assign Ryan a mission he was guaranteed to fail. Even before he had diamonds, it often gave him bonus missions, proving it was a fair system. But this time, the timeline was three years, meaning the system didn't believe Ryan could complete legendary Pokémon training within three years.
"Origin laws?" Ryan muttered to himself. There was really no way Ryan could teach the Pokémon about this; they had to discover it themselves.
After leaving the room, he explained everything to his Pokémon and let them figure it out on their own. Charizard dragged Mewtwo along to spar and test their abilities. The other Pokémon were puzzled, except for Aerodactyl, who seemed to be contemplating something. After all, it was a Pokémon that had lived for countless eons and might have a better understanding of Origin power.
Cosmog wandered around aimlessly, looking everywhere, full of curiosity about its new surroundings.
After sending the Pokémon away, Ryan received a call from Lorelei. Ryan picked up the phone and said, "Lorelei, what can I do for you?"
"Don't worry, I'm not asking you to become one of the Elite Four," Lorelei said with mild irritation. "Sabrina and Lt. Surge, whom you recommended, have already been hired. The Elite Four positions are currently full, so we don't need your help with that."
"Oh, that's good. Then what did you want to talk to me about?" Ryan asked.
"I heard you're going to challenge the Silver Conference in Johto?" Lorelei said seriously. "Could you help us investigate a remaining dark organization that the League dismantled? Their leader is still missing, but according to reports, he's still in Johto. Please keep an eye out for him during your travels."
"Understood. I'll do that," Ryan agreed.
After hanging up the phone, Ryan took a deep breath and thought: Pryce? I hope I can reach him. Otherwise, with his obsession, he might really attack Celebi.
