Chapter 1 - 0. Invasion

The Past - April 2028

Beep!

Daniel sat in the car, bored out of his mind. He wondered when he might be able to get back home. He was starting to feel really hungry.

'What on Earth could be causing so much traffic. I've been stuck in the same position for the past 30 minutes.'

Daniel continued fidgeting with the steering wheel as he waited. His annoyance grew with every passing second. He wondered if he should just take his phone to check out what was going on. The only problem was that he didn't want to be distracted once the cars started moving again. It was at a time like this that he wished that he got his car deck checked out, then at least he could just turn on the radio.

Bwoom.

Daniel felt the ground shake violently, but he was unfazed as they ahd been happening for some time. Although, Daniel noticed that these tremors were significantly more energetic than the previous ones. Daniel thought for a few moments about the strangeness of the tremors' sudden appearance. As far as he knew, Jacksonville hadn't had any earthquakes of this degree for a very long time. If he remembered correctly, it was 100 years ago or something like that; and as far as he knew, the tremors only caused a few bells to ring. Nothing overly serious.

Daniel sighed as he decided that the situation was just to odd and finally pulled his phone out of his pocket. However, before he could finish unlocking his phone, something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. He quickly looked up as he saw a shiny-looking object sailing through the air. Daniel squinted as he struggled to make out what this object was. He could only tell that it was getting closer and closer. As it did Daniel put all his attention into identifying the strange flying object.

"What the...? There's no way,...is that a pe-"

Kaboom!

An explosion of dust and debris went of a few dozen meters away from Daniel's car, causing it to flip over as the strange object crashed into the ground. Daniel's ears rang loudly as he tried to reorient himself. Daniel coughed loudly as he tried to catch his breath. He could now feel a great pressure and pain coming from across his chest and his lower abdomen. He slowly realised that he now hung upside down from the car seat. As he recovered, he unbuckled himself falling with a dull thud onto the roof of his car.

Thud.

Daniel yelped and quickly got up into a kneeling position and looked down to see the glass of his car's windshield covering the area which he landed in. He felt a stinging pain from his forehead and chin, and so he reached up, touching the areas and then brought his hand to eye level. Sure enough, his hands were now decorated with dark crimson liquid.

Daniel then moved towards his left to get the first aid kit from the glove compartment. He then turned to the door to get out but paused at the sight before him. He watched through the window with astonishment at the scene unfolding before him. A massive hole, about 4 meters in diameter, was now present in the highway bridge his car was currently on. Not only that but the bridge looked to be collapsing.

Daniel hastily got out of his crumpled car and noticed a growing procession of people all moving in the opposite direction to all the destruction.

After looking himself over to make sure that he had no injuries

'What a sucky way to end the day.'
