As the rain got heavier, Emperor Dai Zhong decided to cancel the rest of performances and call it a night.
A curfew was also imposed on Capital City to ensure all civilians return to their homes and stayed indoors until the rain and possibly even a heavy storm subsided considering its geographical position close to lakes and seas with just mountains as shelter.
Floods and even typhoons could easily topple those mountains with Mother Nature strength and affected the capital and surrounding areas.
Based on history, when rain fell at night, it would usually stop at dawn during which people would be out of their homes to conduct their businesses as usual.
Despite of this unexpected disruption, most were happy with the festival celebrations and performances put by the best artistes the Majesty hired. It was an event worth celebrating and remembering after what they had been through in the last decade.
Unfortunately for Kai Seven, it had not been a good day and night for him.
What started out as good time with his friends turned out be a series of calamities and he held that girl - whoever she was in that man attire - liable.
From young, he had always outsmarted others - including his friends but today was the first time he got outsmarted.
Losing his wallet token unintentionally to her who he believed their arguments - over which story to be heard - was simply a distraction for her real agenda, being defeated and immobilized in one-to-one fight with her and though he managed to return home with his friends' help and fortunately no family member else around, he wanted to join and enjoy the Dai Unity Festival same nightfall.
Only to encounter that woman who behaved more like a man and got pursued by her relentlessly for reasons still unknown to him. If it was just her molested - which he admitted was not intentional but simply to retrieve what he lost, that person was too petty.
Be it he or she.
Just as he assumed night would be better since he managed to escape only to trespass palace vicinity and encounter Lady Li Shi and Highness. His curiosity still got the better of him and nearly cost his life when the latter hurled a dagger that missed his head by inches.
He swam to other side, climbed the pine tree and over the wall he came through. Upon back on ground, he hurried back to Capital City only to bump into someone that knocked him in pain momentarily.
Unlike other civilians, his home was in nearby Qing Tao nature hills about five kilometres away. Because the main Capital City gates were closed due to curfew, he could not return home and had to remain in Capital City.
Due to limited resources, his options were limited. Earlier on, he boasted to the storyteller that he had 60,000 gold tokens just to show off and impress upon his friends and that half man half woman he now regarded as his opponent though he was still figuring out what to do should he cross paths with her again.
He returned to Dai Long Teahouse as that was the only familiar route he knew. After all the chasing, hiding and trespassing, he could not even recall the Dai En garden he encountered the Highness and Lady Li Shi nor event venue where he joined in the celebrations only to be encounter and being pursued by that half-man half-woman.
As the Teahouse was closed now and would only open at dawn, Kai decided to take one of the benches and lay to rest. Droplets of water were still dripping upon him as he did so. Nevertheless, he hoped the rain would stop soon otherwise he might catch a cold or even fever. He became tired and slept.
At dawn break while the sun was still about to rise, Kai Seven woke up and opened his eyes instantly.
Awakened not by the opening doors of Dai Long Teahouse he made shelter on a bench in the outdoor section but by the roaring engines of what seemed to be a vehicle landing on the road. Upon opening his eyes, he saw the blue and white hovercraft descending from above and flanked by six hoverbikes mounted by Dai troopers of similar colours.
Not wanting to get into any more trouble, Kai immediately got to his feet, ran and hide behind one of the Teahouse pillars while keeping his eyes on what was about to happen.
Simultaneously, blue streaks of beam energy ripped through the early morning skies towards the convoy. Looking above he saw another two hoverbikes accelerating with identical troopers but without helmet masks firing with bike-mounted turret guns and blasters.
The six Imperial Dai troopers counter fired with their similar weapons with two of them falling to the ground and bikes hit.
Kang Jie and Zhan Bao did not like to do this.
But to rescue General Xue Lei, they had to despite realizing that other than themselves, no one else knew the real invitation agenda. For after years of fighting, they did not just see him as their commander but a friend and sworn brother.
From the moment they were on their own right after their commander left with his fellow commanders Fu and Kuang, they fell into the trap. Not by the Shibeibu Empire black and red troopers they were so accustomed to battling, fighting and killing but by their very own kind.
They were ambushed by ten hoverbikes which suddenly appeared from nowhere and opened fire on them. If not for their quick reflexes and skills they acquired from years of battle and learning from their commander, they would have been dead by now.
After killing those traitorous Dai troopers in self-defence, they hijacked two of the bikes and now mounted their own ambush on General Xue Lei and his convoy the same those troopers had launched upon them earlier. Despite being outnumbered six to two, they managed to get upper hand in dispatching another two of those troopers before advancing further.
At this moment, Commander Fu deactivated the bubble glass and together with his colleague Kuang and men, opened fire upon Kang Jie and Zhan Bao.
Two more of the Dai Imperial troopers fell, leaving with just two with Commanders Fu and Kuang who proved to be more experienced and accurate. One blast from the former sent Zhan Bao to his feet, clutching his right leg.
It was at this moment, General Xue Lei, got to his feet and disembarked from the hover carriage to see and address what was happening.
Upon seeing his own men creating chaos, he was shocked and asked, "Kang Jie and Zhan Bao, what're you both doing here?"
"General Xue, we're here to rescue you and bring you to somewhere safe," Kang Jie answered while still engaging in shooting combat.
"Please stop it! I ordered you!" Xue Lei shouted in anger.
"General Xue, this whole arrangement… is a setup," said Zhan Bao, while still enduring his leg injury. "They have no intention to bring us back but to silence us on the way!"
"Shut up and stop firing, Kang Jie!That is an order!"
At his command, Kang Jie stopped firing and so did Commanders Fu and Kuang and their two remaining men. Once fire exchange ceased, Xue Lei approached his two men whom he once regarded as sworn brothers in their years of battling Shibeibu Empire and defending Dai Dynasty.
"Kang Jie and Zhan Bao, I do not know what is happening and I do not want to know. All I knew was that our Majesty learnt our return and summoned me back."
"Do not…fall into their trap." Zhan Bao struggled to speak. "This has never been an invitation to summon us back."
"Please listen to Zhan Bao and me," Kang Jie added, bowing and kneeling before him. "This must be the work of that treacherous Premier Hu and his Imperial Royal Circle. They even pulled wool over his Majesty and everyone's eyes!"
"Stop talking nonsense! If the Majesty wanted us dead, we would be long ago!"
"Right after you left us…." Zhan Bao stammered. "Ten Dai troopers ambushed us, and we barely defeated them and made… our way here."
"General Xue, haven't you forgotten what you once told us?" Kang Jie reminded his commander and friend. "If something's wrong, it's up to us to put it right! If injustice occurs, it's up to us to see that justice being served."
"Yes, I said that." General Xue acknowledged though what had already happened in the past no longer mattered to him now. "But that was when we were battling the Shibeibu troops and placing our lives on the line for our kingdom and people! Now the situation is different. The Majesty had summoned me back to the capital and I cannot defy his order."
"Please Commander, listen to me and Zhan Bao! If you step into the palace, you may never get out alive!"
"If that is what is meant to be, so be it," Xue Lei acknowledged and accepted what was given to him be it trap or not. "From now, I'm no longer your commander. Please forget about me and take care of yourselves."
Turning back to jubilant Imperial Commanders Fu and Kuang, he made his way back to hovercraft.
But Zhan Bao would not take it lying down even when he was injured. Staggering up to his feet and pointing his blaster to his forehead, he said, "Since you refused to acknowledge us and what's coming, what's the point of me living on?"
He opened fire and fell dead.
"Zhan Bao!" Xue Lei cried out as he dashed back to his fallen comrade. So was his other man Kang Jie.
They mourned for a while before Xue Lei turned to Kang Jie saying, "Kang Jie, my mind has been made. If death was to be my future, so be it. I defend my kingdom and my people. I take full responsibility with nothing to fear."
He headed back to the hovercraft with commanders Kuang and Fu, the latter pointing the blaster at Kang Jie, obviously to make sure he was not trying to be funny again.
They parted ways. Xue Lei headed back to palace with remaining convoy while Kang Jie carried his comrade's body over his shoulder and looked for a place to bury.
However light-hearted and critical Kai might be this was one situation he took seriously.
Never had he seen such committed men willing to fight and die for one another. Still since he got expelled from Dai Academy, he could never fully understand the chemistry and relationship bond between them.
But having witnessed what had just happened, Kai felt the need to lend a helping hand even though he had never met, spoken nor have any connections with them.
The rain had stopped completely, Sunlight began to shine. Now was the perfect time to make his move which he could not last night.
This is the story of General Xue Lei and his closest comrades Kang Jie and Zhan Bao:
It happened way before this story, before Dai Zhong became Emperor, when he, Dai Chong and their sister Dai Yu were still children and most importantly when their parents Emperor Dai Ci and Empress Dowager Dai Yuan were alive and still ruling.
Even as recruits, they met, trained together and turned fast friends.
United by their unwavering loyalty to Dai Dynasty, sharing a common goal in serving and defending their nation from long-time foes Shibeibu Empire, the trio shared a deep commitment to the values of patriotism and honour.
On battlefield, they achieved several victories in their campaigns despite suffering major casualties from ambushes and counterattacks from enemies.
Because of their complete trust, knowledge and coordination which were essential to their victories. Besides battle tactics and use of Gladiators mecha, the trio were renowned for their remarkable martial arts skills in different areas. As a result, their combined strength made them a formidable force even when outnumbered and intimidated by enemies in numbers and more advanced technology.
Each of them contributed their unique skills and strengths to battalion through their abilities, thinking and personality.
Xue Lei is a brilliant strategist, great in fencing and swordplay be it with traditional blades or beam saber.
Zhan Bao possesses exceptional Dai Qi attack, throw and block techniques as well as deadly accurate in arrows and blasters marksmanship.
Kang Jie is good in riding horses as individual and leading cavalry, fighting with spears, has great agility and critical thinking skills.
Along with their trust and willing to complement one another, this is what
made them strong in battlefields and even willing to defend the First Capital City despite its eventual downfall. Both as individuals going through thick and thin, fighting as well as piloting Dai Gladiators.
These united them as sworn brothers willing to look after one to make personal sacrifices for the greater good. They fought together, endured hardships, and even faced the risk of death side by side, cementing their bond as true comrades.
In life and death.
Even when Zhan Bao killed himself, this is still their story.
Kang Jie carried his dead comrade over his back out of the Capital City with a heavy heart.
As soon as he did, drizzle of rain came upon again. He remained shocked and could not understand his comrade's actions. It happened so fast in mere seconds. They almost had upper hand over those traitorous Dai troopers twice and nearly rescued their commander.
Since these happened too suddenly, he had no choice but to do what he needed. Starting with finding a place to bury his comrade since they were all orphans as their families were killed long time ago in Shibeibu invasion.
If that was not bad enough, they had no money. After being robbed by Shibeibu troopers during their captivity, the only thing that keep them alive till now was food rations their ruler gave them out of mercy due to his good will which remained a mystery now and probably forever to them.
After walking for a while, Kang Jie entered the green vicinity of what he recognized as Qing Tao hills. Spotting the fig tree, he decided to rest there and put down his comrade's corpse.
"Zhan Bao, I'm sorry I cannot afford your funeral," Kang Jie felt remorse and tearful. "The best and only thing I can do now is to bury you."
He began digging what seemed to be a soft ground with his own bare hands.
It was not easy and could take hours or days. But for his comrade, he kept digging and was determined to make a hole big enough for his comrade and then bury back with the soil he scattered.
While doing so halfway, he sensed movement behind him and asked in a stern tone," Who is that?"
"It is me. I'm just trying to help. I saw what happened just now."
Turning round, Kang Jie saw a long green-haired man in equally green tunic and white clothing - handing him a shovel. Though he was wary since he did not know nor meet him before, he took it reluctantly and began digging until the hole appeared big enough to bury his comrade. Though his hands by then turned dirty and slippery due to rain and mud, the very thought of their happier times together resolved his determination to do what he set out.
Suddenly, he hit something hard and concrete. He stopped hacking and using his right hand to clear whatever the soil covered. The answer soon revealed to him and stranger behind in the form of emerald jade box. By right, he should be curious and attempted to open to see what it contained. But still remembering his objective, he continued digging.
Unknowingly, about two to three hours passed after he made a huge hole, bury his dead comrade and covered with what he just dogged out. The rain stopped and when the ground was flat again, he wiped his sweat and cleaned his soiled hands with his clothing before walking away.
As he was about depart, the same stranger cried out after him, "Sir, don't you want to see what this box contains?"
Instinctively, Kang Jie shook his head and waved his hand back, signaling that the box now belonged to the stranger, whatever his name was or however he looked.
For those no longer matter to him.
What mattered to him now was another thing he need to do after burying his comrade, friend and sworn brother.
Kai Seven gleefully grabbed that jade box and made his way home.
Throughout two to three hours, he did not even get to talk much to the stranger - until when he was about to leave - about the box. As much as he wanted to, he simply did not have the courage to due to the tragedy that befell his comrade and dealt him a huge blow.
But as soon as he was given permission to keep the box, that no longer mattered to him because whatever it contained, he had a strange feeling it could finally turn his luck and life around.
This two-storey manor was simply splendid and majestic.
It was not just an average home but one where one can retreat from the bustle of everyday life to find serenity and connect with the natural world. The view from top, the scent of pine in the air, and the distant manors form a tableau soothing and lifting the spirits.
It was also where architecture and nature co-existed in perfect harmony, creating a haven for those seeking both solace and beauty. Comprising of white walls and sky-blue roof representing holiness and serenity, the manor stood as a testament to architectural splendor with its two stories designed with intricate details that captured the eye.
The exterior was adorned with classic motifs, a harmonious blend of stone and clay that complimented the natural green surroundings. The stonework formed a sturdy foundation, while the wooden furniture added a touch of warmth to the estate.
But the focal point was the spacious balcony gracing the second floor. Surrounded by nature's tranquil beauty, it offered enchanting vistas of meticulously aligned rows of towering pine trees and similar manors in the distance. Its railing, crafted with intricate patterns, blended seamlessly with the greenery.
It extended outward, providing an elevated viewpoint from which to admire the captivating scenery. It also served as great venue for relaxation, offering a quiet sanctuary where one can bask either as individuals, with friends or family, admiring rows of majestic pine trees and neighboring manors combining both nature and social mobility into common surroundings.
Each tree stood tall and dignified, casting their evergreen shadows. The
fragrance of pine filled the air, creating a tranquil atmosphere, and the rustling of the leaves in the breeze added a gentle and soothing natural soundtrack to experience.
What made the balcony stood out more was a launchpad enabling easy access to the hovercraft while also providing a breathtaking view of the surroundings. It was equipped with safety rails and lighting to ensure ease of use during day and night.
This was what made the Li Residence.
Before entering home, Li Neng Yuan instructed two of his men to carry the unconscious person to the back entrance and bedroom.
For he did not wish to alarm his family for now. They had been worried about him since he left as a child to undergo education and training in Dai Academy. Though his parents visited him, and he returned home occasionally on off-days or vacation break, this was his official return and reunion with his parents for good.
Call it superstitious if you wish, it was not in Dai and his family culture to bring in a stranger whom he was not even sure whether it was a he or she nor of that person's motives. After dinner and when everyone was in more relaxed mood, he would inform them.
After disembarking from the horse, he entered the opening gates and up the ivy steps and doorway before announcing his arrival.
"Ah Fu, I'm back!" He called out his servant he first saw attending to errands.
His servant Ah Fu stopped what he was doing. Upon seeing him, his face lit up and he ran up to hug him in joy, much to his amazement.
"Young Master, it is you! It is you!" He smiled; his reaction and action certainly gave Neng Yuan the impression that he had not seen him for a very long time which was understandable. But when both compulsory education and national duty called, separation was inevitable.
Then again, as Neng Yuan once recalled this saying.
Absence makes the heart fonder.
"Ah Fu, what is going on? Who're you talking to?" The woman's voice suddenly disrupted the atmosphere.
Upon seeing her coming out in green clothing with dark blue tunic, Neng Yuan immediately recognized her as his mother Madam Li Qian An. But because he was still hugged by Ah Fu, he decided to let him rejoice first.
"Madam, young master is back!" He answered, still in his joy.
Immediately, her eyes lit up as well and she asked with equally cheerful smile, "Neng Yuan my boy, is that really you?"
Servant Ah Fu gave way for her to take a closer look.
Neng Yuan felt her gently hand moving up his cheek and saw tears of joy running in her eyes. He missed her badly too and regretted that until now, he was unable to spend time with her as much as he wanted. He decided to let her see and feel more of him just he had allowed Ah Fu to make sure he was a real person and not some illusion or ghost.
"Yes, mom. I'm happy to see you again."
"My dear boy!" She seemed to be unable to believe his presence. "You've grown so tall! I almost can't recognize you!"
Moments later, his father and Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan entered the living room and reacted the same way upon seeing him.
"My son, you're back!" His face beamed with happiness. "Look how much you've grown! Even taller than your old man!"
After he too had his fair share of hugging him, his father turned to Ah Fu and instructed, "Get all the servants to prepare his bed and early dinner to celebrate my son's return."
"Right away, sir." Ah Fu obliged before making his way to the kitchen area.
The evening dinner was simple and yet delicious.
The meal began with a big grey porcelain bowl of herbal Dai Yang vegetarian soup. A fragrant blend of herbs and spices wafted from the steamy green broth, it served as soothing and nourishing elixir, boasting a rich medley of natural flavors.
Alongside the herbal soup were plates of pearl white Dai Xiang rice, perfectly cooked to fluffy perfection. The grains glistened like precious gems in the soft amber light, providing a mild and comforting base for the savoury dishes to follow. The rice also served as both canvas and companion, ready to absorb the delightful flavours of both appetizers and main dishes.
Along with the rice were steamed Dai Huang Bai eggs. Boiled to a precise degree of heat, their silky-smooth texture, mild and yellow yolk centre created a pleasant combination. They were served only for Li Neng Yuan since he was still young and healthy.
Next came steamed Dai Shen fish. The tender and white body meat was subtly seasoned, allowing its natural flavors to shine through. The addition of aromatic herbs and a light drizzle of soy-based sauce enhanced the dish without overpowering the delicate fish. Steamed to perfection, this fish was both healthy and satisfying in taste.
The main highlight however was the unique set of braised duck cubes, served with a tantalizing aroma. The meat was tender and succulent, having been slowly cooked to perfection in a savoury sauce. Each cube contained delicate balance of tenderness, rich and indulgent taste. The sauce, glazed over the duck, adds an extra layer of complexity, making each bite a memorable experience.
All these served on exquisite wooden table with cutlery sets of chopsticks, spoons and chili saucers of red with dark sauce.
While the whole Li family dined, the servant Ah Fu stood watch behind Neng Yuan, making sure everything was going smoothly as planned.
Looking at his son's Academy certificate of straight A achievements in theory education, physical training, practical and field combat, martial arts, marksmanship, mecha piloting and swordplay, Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan was very pleased and proud of his son.
There was a Dai logo seal and slogan that said Be Trained And Ready To Serve.
For years of upbringing first as child and now as adult had not gone to waste though mastering all these skills were challenging and required a strong will to focus, persist and pull through.
"Not bad, not bad, my son!" Teng Yuan gave his compliments.
His son simply smiled humbly in his reply, "All thanks to you and mother!"
"Neng Yuan, besides having this dinner to celebrate your return, I've something else to tell you."
Seeing that his son had matured and made him and his wife as proud parents, he decided now was also the time to inform him the news.
"What is it, father?"
"The Majesty will be holding a banquet tomorrow night to celebrate the Highness's return. So, my son, I want you to be there since you return too."
Upon hearing his father mentioning Highness, Li Neng Yuan sprang to full attention right away.
For he immediately knew his father was referring to Princess Dai Yu. To others, she was the Highness. But to him, she was much more than that. For they both trained in the same batch within the Academy, and he knew her slightly more than others.
"Neng Yuan, what's wrong?" His father asked with a concerned look, obviously noticing his knee-jerk reaction.
"Oh nothing, dad. I'm just happy as you on this special occasion." He answered again with a smile but deep inside his mind, he was thinking, Hmm…the Highness…Princess Dai Yu, I like to see her again.
This is Li Neng Yuan.
The only child and son of Imperial Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan and Madam Li Qian An. Athletic, elegant and tall in his looks that attracted many girls even from young.
Ranked as most outstanding cadets of Dai Academy in combat, education and physical training be it martial arts, swordplay or sports. What he has achieved is what many others aspire and want but only a few can emulate and graduate with the same credentials as him.
Recently promoted to West District law enforcement commander for his outstanding leadership qualities despite his young age.
Yet he remains humble, friendly and willing to help anyone he sees in need regardless of their appearance and background. Always willing to lend a listening ear, offer practical advice and aid to his parents, servants and someone he does not know but sees in trouble a while ago.
It is also because of these that made him popular with men and women who specially tend to be emotional and open with him than other men.
His horse-riding abilities, mecha piloting of conventional aircraft, hoverbikes and Gladiator MKs stands him out as among the most competent and reliable pilots - besides just a warrior with martial arts, sword fighting capabilities and weapons handling skills - that Dai Dynasty needs.
Outside of those, he is also creative and intelligent in speaking, presenting, playing musical instruments and composing poems.
But overall, Li Neng Yuan stands on the side of righteousness like General Xue Lei he idolizes as a boy.
Willing to stand up for the weak in justice and do what is needed to put wrong on the path of right. For this is what he should do, given the fact that he is Chief Advisor Li Teng Yuan's son and newly promoted commander upon his superiors' recommendations and graduation from Dai Academy.
Kai Seven happily whistled to himself on his way home though in the back of his mind, he wondered where that stranger - he helped hours ago - was heading.
Because from what he knew and saw from his years of upbringing in the natural greens and rural terrains of Qing Tao Hills, there were only a handful of huts, and his home was the last one still standing after a major flood.
Whether it was by luck or stronger foundation upon where his home stood, it remained a mystery. But that no longer was his concern. Though he did not know the name of person he had helped, he had unintentionally discovered the treasure box found while that person was digging. Whatever it contained must be something precious. But why it ended up beneath the soil remained an open question.
Despite looking rundown and old, his wooden hut still stood out as a rustic haven. Nestled amid the breathtaking natural greens of lush hill terrains, it seamlessly blended with its surroundings, creating a harmonious symbiosis with the pristine landscape.
It exuded a simplistic, yet timeless charm. Its design was unpretentious, with a pitched roof, a wooden façade, and large, unadorned windows that connected the interior with the natural beauty outside. The use of natural materials, like aged timber, provided the hut an earthy organic feel that complemented the hill terrains.
Moss-covered rocks and emerald foliage envelop the hut, softening its edges and creating a seamless transition between the man-made structure and the surrounding wilderness. Vines and climbing plants adorned the wooden walls, further connecting the hut to the vibrant landscape.
Upon reaching home, the first person he saw was his god sister Yin Er and the first thing he smelled was what she was cooking from the pan and wok on stove fire. Unlike others, the first room anyone would see upon entering his place as the kitchen while the living room was just a set of wooden stools and tables just outside, he passed by and where he and his family ate their meals when not at work.
"Hi Kai, you're finally back!" Yin Er greeted him with a smile while still cooking and making sure her dishes were up to standard later at dinner.
Kai did not respond to her directly. Instead, he was more drawn to delicious egg omelette she was cooking and picked up one of bean sprouts to bite upon. Though he was hungry having not eaten since yesterday, he did not want to let her, or anyone know.
"Wow, your cooking is getting better!" Kai praised her while savoring the taste. Wake me up when you are done. I'm getting tired and need to sleep now."
"But I need your help since you come back," Yin Er seemed to plead with him. "What happened to you yesterday? We have not seen you since morning."
"What happened to me?" Kai feigned ignorance; his eyes rolled up while trying to come up with an excuse. But knowing Yin Er's simple-minded personality, he decided to avoid the question and head to his room with his new-owned treasure chest.
Only to be stopped by his father's voice he immediately recognized.
"Kai, where've you been yesterday?" He suddenly entered, carrying kettles of hot water and obviously looking agitated. "The whole Capital City has been placed under curfew and everyone is back with their families at home, but you've been the death of me!"
Suddenly remembering his earlier encounter, Kai decided to use that as his excuse for his absence by saying, "No, father! The city is not under any curfew. Rather it is General Xue Lei's return that made the guards decided to close the gates early."
But his father was not convinced, obviously knowing his character of hanging out with bad company of his so-called friends, always getting into trouble and lying to defend himself.
"Stop spouting nonsense!" He chided Kai in a stern look, obviously not believing him. "General Xue Lei has been away in battle for years trying to rescue the Emperor's brother. Til now, his whereabouts remain unknown, and we don't even know if he is still alive now."
"Father, whether you believe me or not, it's up to you." Kai maintained his stand though he had no evidence nor witness since he was alone in his encounter with General Xue and his men that time by chance. "But I'm certain I saw him."
"Ok, Kai. Since you saw him, tell me what he looks like." His father asked to test him obviously while sitting on the chair and placing the kettles on table.
Trying to recall General Xue's appearance and posture, Kai did his best to imitate while replying, "Well, he looks strong, tall and imposing in his majestic Dai armor. Though I have not seen him fight before, I can sense that he is highly skilled warrior. Just like me."
But his father refused to listen to any of this anymore. With a perplexed look, he threw back the question. "How can he look and be like you?"
This time, Kai had no answer. For his description was the best he could offer based on what he saw as lone witness.
"Son," His father De Qi slowed down his tone. "It's not like I like nagging at you. But please stop daydreaming for good. You're not young anymore. Even if you cannot become a scholar, warrior nor established a stable career, it is time for you to marry and settle down."
"Father," Kai felt the need to argue this time as this concerned his future and life. "How many times have I told you now is not the right time? I'm happy with being single. Anyway, I'm getting tired now. I have been stranded in Capital City since yesterday and did not have a decent sleep."
Turning to Yin Er, he said with a playful smile, "Wake me when dinner's ready."
"What's inside the chest you are holding?" She asked with a curious look at what he was holding.
"Sorry, that's my little secret." He stuck out his tongue mischievously before retiring to his bedroom which happens to be one of three compartments within the hut. The other room was occupied by his father and Yin Er who only slept there occasionally due to her duties as palace maid.
Once alone in his room, Kai Seven examined the mysterious jade treasure chest.
From its elegant design, it clearly stood out as a magnificent work of art. Its exterior was obviously adorned with seemingly real emerald jade and intricate carvings that seemed to hint of its history.
It was securely locked, with keyhole nowhere to be seen and seemingly suggesting whatever was inside spelt immense value. Obviously, secrets known to selected few.
Kai attempted to open the chest but however hard he tried, it simply would not open. While he was still struggling in his attempt, his father again called out to him, needing his help again with chores he absolutely hated doing.
Putting the chest under his bed, he laid down and went to sleep.
For he was really getting tired after being stranded during curfew and not sleeping well in the exterior compound of Dai Long Teahouse from last night to now.
This is Kai Seven.
Coming from a poor family, his mother died at childbirth after escaping from Shibeibu invasion of First Capital City.
Also known as Kai Qi, he is a young man with an unruly shock of long, vibrant green hair, a striking feature that sets him apart in any crowd.
As the only son of a fortune teller De Qi living in Qing Tao Hills and working in Capital City due to lower living costs and having to make ends meet, he has grown up surrounded by natural greenness of trees and barren terrains.
Besides being pregnant, his mother was already seriously injured while escaping with his father from Shibeibu's invasion of First Capital City.
Despite living with just his father and probably because of this, Kai possesses a mischievous, laid-back and easy-going demeanour that often belies the complexity of loss and despair over his mother he never met.
While Kai is charming in looks, he is not very smart even though he thinks he is and likes to show off to his family, friends and others whatever he knows but is always dismissed as talking nonsense - even when helping his father in fortune telling business.
Lazy and not interested in studying, he is eventually expelled after just six months in military for illegal gambling, getting into frequent fights with unreasonable and bullying cadets, beating up and nearly killing one commander whom he saw as abusive to himself and fellow cadets.
Even before as child, he has a penchant for getting into trouble with his questionable friends in Capital City that his father perceives as bad company and warned him many times to stay away but he refuses to listen.
He is also known for his dark sense of humour, often bending the facts or conjuring up elaborate excuses to defend his actions. Such as lusting for beautiful girls like most young men at his age. Except his god sister Yin Er.
Habits that break trust with his peers, worsens his relationship with his father on hot and cold and land him in precarious situations.
A nicer phase for lying.
Despite his proclivity for mischief, Kai is compassionate in heart and willing to help others in need such as the stranger he helped with digging and burying his comrade.
Sumeijian opened her eyes from what seemed to be a long slumber.
Her eyelids were still heavy and fluffy with specks. She felt as though her body had been accustomed to whatever she was lying on. Even though she could not tell what time it was now, her instincts told her that she had been asleep for quite some time.
Upon waking up, the first thing she saw was the smiling face of a woman.
Even when she was not fully conscious, she could tell the woman was middle-aged who reminded her very much of her late mother. Her rich brown hair was a cascade of chestnut waves and exuded an air of timeless grace, framing her face with few sliver threads that hinted at her wisdom and beauty earned and retained despite her age.
When her vision became clearer, she noticed the woman wearing a vivid ensemble, adorned in verdant green attire coupled with complementing dark blue tunic. Around her neck, a delicate white necklace graced her collar bone, its simplicity contrasting the vibrancy of her clothing.
"I'm glad you're finally awake." The woman greeted her.
Looking at her own entirely white attire and untied long blond hair flowing, she asked, "Where am I? What is this place?"
"You are in our home of Li Family Residence." The woman replied with her smile still on her cheeks. "My son rescued you. Don't worry, you're safe now. Nobody is going to harm you here."
Behind her, a familiar young man came forth. Upon seeing his blue raven hair and handsome looking face, she was filled with joy but at the same time being mindful of the unfamiliar surroundings. However instead of wearing the white Dai Imperial attire with blue stripes, logo and cloak, he was now in white clothing and sky-blue tunic.
Greeting her with a gentle smile, he introduced myself, "Hi, my name is Li Neng Yuan, and this is my mother Madam Li. How're you feeling now?"
Composing herself, Sumeijian get up from the soft cotton bed she had been sleeping and now sitting upon.
"I…am feeling a little better now." Sumeijian answered, doing her best to forge grittiness to get more attention and concern from the man she was infatuated moments ago and now looking directly into his face.
"From what I see," Neng Yuan said. "You don't look like a local. If so, what brings you here to Dai Capital City?"
"My name is Sumeijian." Then she paused for a while, being wary of what she was about to say next. Knowing that Dai Dynasty and Shibeibu Empire were still enemies at bitter war, she decided not to disclose her true background for fear of being immediately rejected and even kicked out by the man she was now obsessed with and his entire family.
So, she conjured a story saying: "I come here with my father on a business trip. To protect me from bad guys, he dressed me like a man. Then on our way home, we were attacked by robbers. My father told me to run while he fended off those robbers. At first, I was reluctant but being his daughter and in that heated moment, I must listen to him upon his strong insistence.
While I'm okay now, I do not know what happened to my father. I'm very worried now. He could be killed by those robbers in wanting to distract them from me!"
Thinking of her late mother whom Neng Yuan's mother reminded her of, she succeeded in getting her tears to well in her eyes and run down her cheeks.
"Don't worry, Sumeijian. I and my men will help you find your father." Li Neng Yuan assured her.
"But right now, you need to rest first." His mother added, her smile still on. "It's getting late, still raining and tomorrow morning; my son and our men will help you find and be reunited with your father."
Seeing that her ploy worked, Sumeijian nodded and did exactly as she was told.
The following morning, Sumeijian and Li Neng Yuan found themselves back on the bustling streets of Dai Capital City, a short 15-minute distance from Western District Zone where the latter and his family were living.
Escorted by Neng Yuan's servants Ah Fu and Ah Nan, they mounted a citywide search for her father.
The city's main attractions unfolded before them, a tapestry of shophouses, shopping districts, skyline towers, and office buildings, adorned with the vibrant chaos of bazaars and street performances by talented artists.
But Sumeijian remained indifferent. For she had explored these streets earlier, in the guise of a man, and the city's glittering façade held no allure for her now. Now she was dressed almost like Neng Yuan but instead of standard and sky-blue tunic, hers was entirely in pink over her white clothing his mother earlier prepared for her while she was unconscious.
Her agenda was never to find her absent father. Though her father was alive, he had never been with her and late maid Chanqinger through their exploration of Capital City since they ran away from home in the first place.
Her only intention was to win Neng Yuan's affection and be with him as long as possible. From the moment she first saw him, she felt attracted to the newly promoted West District commander. Her unspoken infatuation was the driving force behind her fabricated lie leading them on what she already knew was a wild goose chase.
At noon when most people were about to have lunch, Neng Yuan turned to her asking, "Did your father know anyone here in the city? Or you know of any places here that he frequented?"
Sumeijian shook her head naturally before answering, "No. My father never told me."
"Then it'll be hard to find him. Can you also tell me what your father looks like? So that I can sent my men to search for him as well?"
Her face turned cold upon hearing this. She knew what her father was like and looking around, she could not find anyone with slightest resemblance to him. Even if there were any, her ploy might be exposed as nobody knew her other than that young punk. Therefore, instead of responding, she remained silent.
"I'll recognize him when I see him again," She came up with another answer suddenly entering her mind.
"It's okay if you do not wish to tell me. I understand, "Neng Yuan said. "If today we cannot find him, we can search again tomorrow. In the meantime, you can stay at my place. Are you hungry now? Can we find a place to eat first?"
Just as Sumeijian was about to say yes, she noticed three men coming out from one of the shops, one of them saying, "This fortune teller is very accurate in his prediction, but I cannot say the same for his son."
Probably noticing what she was seeing, Neng Yuan turned to her and suggested, "Why don't we visit this fortune teller since those customers said he was accurate in his predictions? Perhaps he could point us your father's whereabouts?"
Though feeling hungry now, Sumeijian was also wary not to give herself away. Realizing that the man she developed feelings for turned out to be the law enforcement commander who would not be deceived easily and for long, she nodded.
Nestled amidst the shophouses, a small fortune-telling shop stood as a mini sanctuary of mysticism and ancient wisdom.
Its entrance, decorated with colorful trinkets and symbols, beckoned those seeking insights into their destinies.
The atmosphere exuded an air of mystique, with dimly lit interiors creating atmosphere of intrigue. The scent of burning incense wafted through the air, enveloping visitors in a fragrant embrace that heightened the sense of otherworldly anticipation.
The shelves were filled with books on fortune telling, geomancy and array of timeless artifacts in ancient scrolls, ornate statues, and a plethora of divination tools such as tarot cards, joss paper, crystal balls and chopsticks co-existed in harmonious disarray, each promising a glimpse into the future.
The shop's eclectic collection revealed the diversity of preserved practices over generations.
Kai Seven reluctantly stood in for his father who was out on errands of buying more candles, firewood, matchsticks, groceries and food that their hut was running out of supplies that morning and was still not back yet.
Knowing his father to be more capable and popular, he initially wanted to switch roles, but his father was not easily taken in, knowing that he would most likely hang out with bad company of his so-called friends and get into trouble again.
Unlike his father, Kai knew nothing about fortune telling but to be a filial son which was compulsory by Dai law and make ends meet since he had no other skill having been expelled by Academy and unable to get a proper stable job, he did what he was supposed to do with great reluctance.
Dressed in traditional purple fortune-teller robes with yellow intricate patterns over his casual white clothing and green tunic, he sat behind the table with white plain paper, brushes and black inn bottle.
Despite reading many books on fortune telling and geomancy, none of the words made any sense to him and worse still, his father's patience in teaching and testing him was now limited to the core as he still could not comprehend and eventually lost interest. But because he could not afford to be ignorant in front of customers who paid for their food and daily essentials, he simply conjured convincing lies to look professional.
Anyway, from what he saw, he was confident that customers would still pay him whether his predictions were accurate or not or even of outcomes not favorable to them.
But on this day, a familiar face came back to haunt him.
The couple entered the shop, accompanied by what looked like their two servants on either side. Kai immediately recognized the woman as the one who made fun of him, humiliated and pickpocketed him over some storytelling bid war. Though she was now dressed in more feminine attire of white clothing with all pink of standard and light tunic, he was sure she was the one who turned his life upside down in one day and night.
As for the other man with him, he could not recall exactly. Maybe or maybe not the same guy he ran into while trying to escape being spotted by the Highness and Lady Li Shi for eavesdropping on their private conversation.
Upon seeing the fortune teller, Sumeijian immediately recognized him as the long green-haired man who attempted to take advantage of but ended up being humiliated by her.
But in order not to alarm Neng Yuan and his servants, she decided to remain silent and play along despite glaring at him.
However, it turned out that Neng Yuan recognized him as well.
"Oh, it's you again." Neng Yuan greeted the fortune teller with the same gentle smile. Turning to Sumeijian, he said, "Last night while you were unconscious, this gentleman saved you as well besides me."
The young chap immediately turned away, seemingly in embarrassment over seeing her face.
"No, no, no! I don't recognize you! I think you must have mistaken me for someone else."
Neng Yuan shook his head while still smiling before stating his purpose of them being in the shop when they were all seated facing each other.
"This lady is looking for her father. Using your fortune-telling skills, can you tell us his whereabouts?"
Sumeijian continued glaring at the fortune teller, making sure that he was not up to any tricks nor trying to be funny otherwise she would put him in a worse position than before.
Feeling boxed in, Kai Seven had no choice but to comply.
Though he had never met the woman's companion before or even remember if it was the same guy he bumped into the night before, he had an intuition that he came from a rich family and was of high status based on his elegant attire.
But he was very sure the woman might not what she claimed to be based on her unwomanly behavior in their last two encounters. Her hair was longer now. However, given the current situation of him being in business and they were his potential customers, he had to do his job of standing in for his father.
Plucking up the courage to look at the royal man in his eyes, he granted his request by saying, "Sure. But before that, do you mind if this lady writes something on paper so that I can predict more accurately?"
Kai handed the lady a piece of white paper and brush filled with ink. But instead of taking from his hand, she snatched the paper rudely and began drawing what looked like a snake on it.
Upon handing to him, Kai did not quite understand what she was implying even though he knew her intentions behind was to annoy him deliberately at her pleasure.
But in order not to offend her male companion - whoever he was and do his job, he produced another paper and handed to her with the same brush saying, "Will it better for the lady to write a word so that I am able to give more accurate analysis?"
Again, Sumeijian bluntly snatched the paper from him with force.
But instead of drawing, she decided to write one word which was sheep in Dai character before presenting to the so-called trying to show off and act smart fortune teller.
She had no intention to be there in the first place and did not expect to see him for the third time. But to put herself in the good books of the other man she was in love with, she decided to use her silence instead of her voice to make things difficult for the fortune teller.
Upon looking at the word, Kai simply came up with another story by saying, "Sheep is mostly found in the north of Dai Dynasty but unfortunately that also happened to be the north which was now occupied by Shibeibu Empire as part of their territory.
Since your father happens to be there, I'm afraid…"
He secretly smiled to himself in mind as doing that was the only way to get his revenge over her who already humiliated him three times without offending her other companion.
"Afraid what?" The lady asked, obviously looking alarmed.
Sensing her look of alarm and probably desperation as well, Kai decided to deal her the final mental blow the same way she humiliated, pickpocketed and immobilized him by completing his sentence, "that he may no longer be in this world."
"What?" She almost cried out in grief. "How dare you speak ill of my father!"
"It's ok. Fortune tellers may not always be accurate," Her companion comforted her. Turning back to Kai, he produced 10 silver tokens and put them on the table. "Here is the fee for your services. We'll find another way to locate her father."
They both got up and left the shop.
Moments later, Kai's father returned and took over after instructing him to return to the hut with what he bought and cut firewood.
After leaving the Capital City and upon returning to the wooden hut on Qing Tao nature hills, he again found that he was alone as his god sister already left for palace to serve the Highness at dawn.
With no one around, Kai decided to take out the jaded treasure chest from under his bed and tried to open again. But no matter how hard he try, the chest stubbornly remained locked. Worse still, there was no keyhole in anywhere on its exterior top, sides and bottom let alone the key.
But despite being lazy in personality, he refused to give up and persisted
this time round. The fact that this treasure chest was locked and hidden away in soil clearly spelt whatever it contained was precious or even priceless.
But then again if it was so precious, why did the owner choose not to keep but lock and hide away in rural areas like Qing Tao hills?
As weird as his thoughts might be to others and even himself, he had a strong feeling that if he succeeded in opening the chest, whatever it contained might change his and his family life from poor to rich.
But the chest still refused to open. Eventually he got so frustrated that he threw it down the floor. At that moment, the chest finally sprang open and to his shock, out came three sharp gleaming daggers that sprang vertically and embedded in the above ceiling.
Kai Seven again felt relieved. He could have been killed just as he should have been by the dagger the Highness threw in his direction while he was hiding in the lake to avoid being seen earlier. Only this time, there was not one but three sharp daggers flying upwards simultaneously.
Looking down, Kai saw the remaining pair of daggers, emerald ring, crossbow and seven green tipped arrows. To others, they were just weapons on plain sight but to him, they were worth much in terms of value and whoever hid these in jaded chest certainly did not know how to cherish them and was foolish enough to hide them away. Taking the ring, he wore with glee.
After their encounter with fortune teller - whom Sumeijian perceived as imposter from the way he spoke and communicated with her and companion, they proceeded to Dai Long Teahouse - the same venue she first encountered him and his equally rowdy friends.
Her companion - also her saviour and ideal man - Li Neng Yuan was feeling hungry after searching for her father the whole day with his servants. To continue being in his good impressions, she decided to play along though she was hungry as well. She hoped that the innkeeper, his servants and even storyteller would not recognize her even though she was dressed as a woman she really was but in Li family attire that his mother had selected for her.
Because the ground floor was already crowded, they decided to walk up the stairs. Compared with other buildings with elevators Dai Long Teahouse was
still very much traditional but that was the way the founders, owners and families wanted to keep their culture alive.
There was only one table and four seats left just right after the last lunch group left. The teahouse servants cleared the dishes, cleaned up the table and one of them beckoned she, Neng Yuan and his own servants to take a seat and place orders while they were ready.
Sumeijian had never eaten there before since her last experience was not what she wanted. But when she finally saw the traditional yet still famous Dai dishes that Neng Yuan ordered with decisive ease and placed on the table right before that, she was almost tempted but at the same time, being mindful of what was with and around her.
The sumptuous lunch was laid out before them. turning out to be a small feast for just four of them. In the form of Dai culinary dishes, accompanied by the finest selection of Dai Long's famous blue pearls tea.
Steamed boiling soup with prawn dumplings, deer meat and steamed fish, infused with the warmth of ginger and the light touch of soy sauce along with four bowls of rice and tea in jug and cups.
When seated, Neng Yuan looked at her with a smile and placed a plate of rice with a spoon and pair of chopsticks before her before saying, "I know you're still worried about your father, but you still need to eat so that you have strength to find him."
Truth being said, Sumeijian was very hungry. But if she just splurged and gobbled up the food before her, it would certainly arouse his and his servants' suspicion. Since she came up with the story of her missing father that only she was certain their search would come to nothing, she had to resist the temptation and play her part of anxious and worried daughter well.
Besides, no one - in the right mind - would just attack the food and eat to their content in front of their peers simply out of hunger unless they no longer care about their parents.
But since Neng Yuan took the initiative of placing the food right before her, how could she ever refuse? Nodding her head, she picked up the chopsticks and started selecting the food.
"Sumeijian, I do not know what you like to eat," Neng Yuan said politely like a true gentleman. "So, I selected and ordered the best dishes this famous teahouse offers. I hope you enjoy them. Don't worry about your father. Once we finished eating, we continue our search and if we still can't find him, we do it again tomorrow."
Turning to his servants as well, he added, "This is my treat for you as well for helping me and her. Let us all eat."
So, all four of them began their lunch. Upon emptying the dishes and drinking the famous tea, Neng Yuan turned to Sumeijian, "May I ask you where you're from? Are you from neighboring town or countryside?"
Feeling uncomfortable by his sudden questions, Sumeijian simply countered by throwing back her own question, "Why do you ask?"
"Pardon me for asking. It's not just because I need to know where you're from. But if you can tell me, perhaps it'll be easier for me and my men to locate your father."
Sumeijian again did not know how to respond. All she ever wanted and hoped was her time with her dream guy right before her would last forever. But at the same time, she also remembered that he was also law enforcement commander. If she continued with her lie, it would be a matter of time before she got exposed.
Just as she was wondering what to do next, a commotion suddenly broke out. Something fell from the rooftop of opposite shophouse, and some civilians screamed out in fright. Most of the customers began coming down and rushing out of the Teahouse to see what was going on.
"Let us take a look as well." Neng Yuan suggested.
His servants nodded and in seconds, all four of them were out of the teahouse. There was a huge crowd gathering and murmuring of what might have taken place in noon right when everyone was having their lunch or half daybreak.
"Please give way," Neng Yuan told them, displaying what looked to be a white seal certifying his appointment as West District commander and major.
Looking at three Dai Imperial guards kneeling, he asked them," What's going on? What is this commotion all about?"
One of them gave way for him to take a closer look.
"Commander Li," He replied. "A middle-aged man just fell from the rooftop and is now dead. As to what happened, we're just as puzzled."
While everyone was, certainly not Sumeijian. For she did not know if this incident was a misfortune or blessing in disguise. But whichever, it now served as a perfect excuse for her real agenda which she was determined to fulfil by any means. The moment, she saw the corpse of the middle-aged man with beard and in overall grey clothing, an idea suddenly came into her head and sprang her into next act.
"Father!" She suddenly cried out with tears welling in her eyes and running down her face, again thinking of Neng Yuan's and her own mother to enhance her performance. Rushing to the man she did not even recognize; she continued her grief. "Father, how can you die just like that? I'm your only daughter and you're my only parent after mom died. How can you leave me? If you die, what am I going to do? Since you die, I might as well join you by going to the top and jump as well!"
Sumeijian got up and immediately rushed to the shophouse, looking for a way to go up the rooftop.
Only to be held back by Li Neng Yuan.
"Sumeijian, please don't do anything foolish. Your father might be gone but you still have me. I'm sorry about his death and understand your grief. If you want, you can stay at my place temporarily."
"My father is dead. With my mother gone as well, I'm the only one left." She continued crying, this time on his shoulder now that she was comforted by the man she wanted to be with, his hands on her shoulders.
Turning to his guards, Neng Yuan instructed strictly, "Seal this area immediately. I also want a full body examination and investigation into how this man died."
"Yes, commander." The guard - who earlier replied - acknowledged.
Focusing on Sumeijian, Neng Yuan reverted to his gentle tone. "Tonight, I
will not be joining you for dinner, but my mom will. The Highness has returned from Academy and I and my father need to be at the palace banquet at Majesty's invitation and order. If you need anything, you can tell her or my servants."
Sumeijian nodded while she continued crying. But in her mind, she was already jubilant. Her quick thinking into coming up with such a plank worked brilliantly as planned and she could now be staying with the man she longed to be with to her heart's desire.
As to how the investigation might turn out, it no longer matters. For they were not her priorities. What really mattered was she got exactly what she wanted. Other people -including even Li Neng Yuan himself - might not understand now but she believed he would eventually.
Elsewhere on the rooftop and unseen by everyone below, the four masked men stood watch.
After getting hold of the man who accidentally overheard their conversations in the hostel room they rented, they silenced him for fear of him indulging their real intentions of being in Dai Capital City before dumping him down the streets below.
They were also the ones who attacked Sumeijian and killed her maid Chanqinger only to be defeated by her male companion the night before. If not for their superior's orders, they could have killed Sumeijian as well but doing that would get them beheaded by the King and her father. Henceforth, she remained their top priority for them to get her back home safely.
If for not that highly skilled warrior, they met again and now recognized as law enforcement commander since the Dai guards seemed to report to him.
Nevertheless, they observed her with amusement.
She might have fooled everybody below but not them. Now that her maid died at their hands, they were the only ones who knew her real identity.
