Every book I have ever loved ended. This one is ending too, only earlier than I planned.
I won't pretend this is the ending I had in mind. When I started writing The Man Who Only Works in the Rain, I imagined a last chapter full of answers, with every thread tied off and every question resolved. Instead, I'm writing to tell you that I'm stopping, and that the story stops here, unfinished.
I owe you an honest explanation. Writing takes time, energy and a kind of faith that the next page will be worth the effort. Lately I've had less of all three. I could keep forcing out words until the book was "done", but you deserve better than a book finished out of obligation. So do I.
To everyone who read this, thank you for your time, your patience and your curiosity. If a sentence stayed with you, or made you stop and think, then this book did what a book is supposed to do, even unfinished.
I don't know whether I'll ever come back, but I have an idea in mind. So this is not a closing of doors. It is a pause, and I'm leaving the light on.
