Chapter 268 - Authority of the Eternal Warden

Shadow was the unseen manifestation of existence. The presence that persisted beyond direct perception, serving as a boundary between the revealed and the concealed. It existed wherever something could be perceived, yet remained beyond the limits of what could be seen.

Through Visitor of Darkness, Darius could interact with that manifestation.

Through the Black Sun Domain, his shadows became connected to divine authority.

And through the Warden's Authority, he could use them to guard, bind, and enforce the laws within his jurisdiction but these were not three names for the same power.

They were three different aspects of something Darius had spent countless hours trying to understand. In its simplest form…Shadow was not the absence of existence. It was the part of existence that remained beyond the light.

Darius stood before his reflection in the Lost Forest. For several moments, neither moved.

Then Darius straightened his back and inhaled. His reflection noticed the change immediately.

It saw an opening. The black-haired figure dashed forward, disappearing before its foot had even touched the ground a punch shot toward Darius's face from the left.

Darius didn't move.

The punch connected, sending him flying sideways through the air.

Before he could regain his balance, the reflection appeared above him and struck again.

Darius was sent downward, but the reflection was already moving.

It appeared from another angle.

Another punch.

Then another.

Every attack landed. Darius's body was thrown from one direction to another as his reflection relentlessly pursued him. The forest echoed with the sounds of impacts, and the ground beneath them cracked whenever Darius was driven into it. Yet something unusual was happening…Darius wasn't attempting to defend himself.

His eyes remained open, but his attention was somewhere else entirely.

"My shadow…."

He had always known that his powers were connected to Eryndor's Black Sun Domain. His title, the Warden of the Black Sun, had established that connection from the moment he received it but that was only part of the truth. His shadows had existed before he understood the divine nature of his title.

They came from somewhere else….The Shadow Realm. A separate space that Darius could enter and leave at will, a place where ordinary boundaries held little meaning and where his shadows could move without being restricted by the physical world.

He could enter it, he could emerge from it, he could use it to conceal himself, move through space, and attack from unexpected directions.

But the Shadow Realm was not the Black Sun Domain, the two were separate. Darius had been treating them as though they were different expressions of a single power, attempting to force his shadows to behave according to the laws of the Black Sun.

That was his mistake. The Shadow Realm is separate from the Black Sun Domain. His reflection struck him across the face.

Darius flew backward. "But I am connected to both." Another attack came and he was driven into the ground. "The Shadow Realm gives me access to shadows." The reflection landed beside him and seized him before he could rise. "The Black Sun gives those shadows their divine nature."

The reflection threw him upward and Darius's body rose through the air. His opponent followed, appearing above him before bringing both hands down.

The impact sent Darius crashing into the forest floor. The ground split beneath him. His reflection landed several meters away. It extended one hand and the Shadows gathered around its fingers, forming a long spear. The weapon was dark and featureless, its surface absorbing the light around it.

The reflection pulled its arm back and threw. The spear crossed the distance between them.

Darius exhaled and opened his eyes. The weapon stopped directly in front of his face. For a moment, it remained suspended in the air then the spear dissolved.

Its shape collapsed into ordinary darkness, scattering into wisps that disappeared before reaching the ground. Darius slowly stood. He brushed the dirt from his clothes and looked at his reflection. "It must've been fun for you to hit me that much." His expression remained calm.

The reflection didn't respond.

Darius rolled his shoulders before looking down at the shadow beneath his feet.

"I was thinking wrong all this time." He raised his gaze. "The Shadow Realm is separate from the Black Sun Domain. But I am connected to both through the shadows."

His right hand opened. A faint darkness gathered around his fingers.

"Because I am…" The air around him changed. His reflection stepped backward. Darius's eyes glowed with a deeper shade of purple. "…the Warden of the Black Sun." He extended his right hand but instead of reaching toward his reflection, his hand entered a different space.

His arm disappeared beyond the boundaries of the physical world. The reflection immediately reacted. It attempted to move. A portal opened in the sky beside it before the reflection could escape, a hand emerged from the opening and seized it by the throat.

Darius pulled.

The reflection was dragged through the portal and brought directly in front of him.

Its feet left the ground. For the first time, the two stood close enough that Darius could see every detail of its expression. The reflection struggled..It attempted to summon its shadows, but the darkness around its body failed to respond as expected.

Darius watched without speaking…he understood now. He wasn't merely controlling the shadows that belonged to him. He could reach through the Shadow Realm and interact with the shadows connected to existence itself and when his divine authority was applied to that connection, the shadows became something more than a means of movement or attack.

They became an extension of his jurisdiction. Darkness began spreading upward from Darius's feet. It covered his shoes, climbed his legs, and gradually enveloped his entire body.

His torso disappeared beneath it, his arms followed. Only his neck and head remained uncovered.

The darkness didn't behave like an ordinary cloak. It moved with the quiet certainty of something that had already claimed the space around him. Darius looked directly at his reflection. "Yes," he said, his voice low. "I understand it now." His purple eyes brightened.

"Authority of the Eternal Warden — Absolute Restraint." The darkness spread outward. It covered the ground beneath his reflection, expanding across the battlefield until the entire area seemed to fall beneath an invisible boundary. Then the shadows moved. Chains emerged from the darkness.

They rose around the reflection from every direction, wrapping around its arms, legs, torso, and neck. The reflection struggled immediately Its body changed. Black liquid poured from its form, attempting to escape through the gaps between the chains but the chains followed.

They bound the black liquid itself. The reflection tried to separate into smaller pieces. Every fragment was restrained. It attempted to return to its original shape. The chains tightened no matter what form it took, the authority continued to recognize it as the same existence.

Darius released his grip. The reflection remained suspended in the air, held in place by the chains. Darius turned his back on it and walked toward a tree standing near the edge of the battlefield. The forest had been damaged by their prolonged fight. Several trees had fallen, and the ground was covered in scattered branches and broken stone.

Yet the tree before him remained standing. Darius stopped in front of it. He raised his head and examined its trunk. For years, he had perceived the world as a collection of separate things. Trees were trees, People were people, Buildings were buildings. Each possessed its own form, its own boundaries, its own existence but now, as he looked at the tree, something changed.

He could see its shadow. Not merely the dark shape cast across the ground by the light filtering through the forest. He could perceive the part of its existence that remained beyond direct perception. The unseen presence that persisted regardless of whether anyone acknowledged it.

The tree was not separate from its shadow. Its shadow was not an empty space left behind by light.

It was another manifestation of the tree's existence and Darius could reach it. He slowly extended his hand toward the trunk. The shadow beneath the tree shifted Darius felt something connect. For an instant, the distinction between himself and the tree seemed less absolute.

He wasn't absorbing it and he wasn't destroying it…He was recognizing that its shadow could become part of the domain he governed.

A quiet understanding settled within him. His authority was not simply the power to restrain an enemy. It was the power to establish what fell under his guardianship. Behind him, the reflection continued struggling. The chains shook as it attempted to break free. Darius lowered his hand.

Then he glanced backward over his right shoulder. His expression was calm.

"What falls under my guardianship shall never escape my keeping."

He snapped his fingers and the chains tightened. The reflection's body was pulled apart by the overwhelming force of the restraint, its form dissolving into black liquid before the remaining darkness scattered across the battlefield. The red crystal orb embedded within its chest fell to the ground.

It rolled once before coming to a stop. Darius walked over and picked it up. He examined the crystal briefly. Then he crushed it in his hand. The orb shattered and the remaining black liquid vanished. Silence returned to the Lost Forest.

Darius stood alone. The darkness surrounding his body slowly receded, and the chains disappeared into the ground.

The authority was canceled. For a moment, he remained standing then the exhaustion caught up with him. His knees gave way and Darius fell to the ground, catching himself with one hand before collapsing onto his side.

His breathing was heavy. The battle had lasted far longer than he could remember, and the final use of his authority had consumed nearly everything he had left. He stared up through the trees. A faint smile crossed his face. He had finally understood the relationship between his powers.

The Shadow Realm was his passage..the Black Sun was the source of his divine connection and the Warden's Authority was the law that gave his shadows the power to restrain existence itself.

Darius closed his eyes. For the first time since entering the Lost Forest, he allowed himself to rest.
