The committee meeting had left Silver wound too tight to face her dorm room and Americus's inevitable interrogation about every micro-expression that had crossed her face during the hour spent in proximity to Eli. Instead, she'd grabbed her skating bag from their tower and headed for Ingalls, hoping the familiar ritual of practice might clear her head enough to function like a normal human being.
The rink was quiet in late afternoon, that perfect window between figure skating sessions and when the hockey team would storm in for their evening practice. Silver preferred it this way. The boards empty, overhead lights humming their mechanical song, the ice stretching before her like both invitation and challenge.
