Chapter 144 - CHAPTER-144

The moment Kai Arden stepped onto the stage, the entire atmosphere shifted. The lights caught him first — sharp beams sliding over the deep black of his tailored suit, making the fabric gleam subtly as if it had been crafted for that exact second. The jacket fit him flawlessly, sculpted along his shoulders and tapering at his waist, defining his lean frame with quiet authority. It wasn't just well-fitted — it was precise, like every measurement had been memorized by the tailor's hands.

Underneath, the dark maroon shirt added a dangerous contrast, rich and intense. The colour made his skin look warmer beneath the stage lights, the top button undone just enough to suggest ease without sacrificing elegance. A slim black tie fell perfectly straight down his torso, disciplined and sharp, brushing against the polished buckle of his belt.

Even the way he moved was controlled — one hand adjusting his blazer sleeve slightly, the other resting casually at his side. The trousers fell clean and straight, elongating him further, making him look taller, more commanding. There was no hesitation in his stride.

And that was the moment Alina saw him. At first, she hadn't even realized she was staring. Her gaze had simply lifted — and then it stopped completely.

Her breath caught. The man on the stage didn't just look handsome — he looked untouchable. Like he belonged under the lights. Like the world had been waiting for him to arrive. The maroon against black made him look dangerously refined, the kind of man who could ruin your peace with a single glance.

Her eyes moved without permission — from the sharp cut of his shoulders, down the smooth line of his chest, to the effortless way the suit hugged him as he stood there owning the room.

He didn't smile widely. He didn't need to, as his presence was enough. And Alina, for the first time in a long while, forgot how to look away.

The moment he stepped onto the stage, the atmosphere changed. It wasn't gradual. It was instant. Every camera swung toward him at once. The sharp mechanical whir of lenses adjusting filled the air. Drones hovering above tilted, their red indicator lights blinking as they focused on him. Flashlights exploded in bursts of white, one after another, so rapid that for a second the entire stage seemed to flicker like lightning trapped in a storm.

And every pair of eyes… was on him. Kai Arden stood under the lights as if he belonged there—as if the stage, the noise, the chaos, the attention were all extensions of him. Tonight, he was being introduced as the global brand ambassador of the luxury watch line.

A photographer called out, "Sir, please show us the watch."

Kai moved with effortless grace. He slid two fingers under the edge of his blazer sleeve and pulled it back just enough to reveal the watch. The movement was smooth, deliberate, almost lazy yet perfect for the cameras. Click. Click. Click.

He shifted his posture slightly, turning his wrist so the dial caught the light. Then another angle. Another pose. A faint tilt of his chin. A slight narrowing of his eyes. Every gesture was controlled, unhurried, and confident.

The CEO of the company soon joined him on stage. They shook hands, posed for photographs, and exchanged a few formal words. Cameras flashed again and again, reporters shouting questions that dissolved into noise.

Alina had seen him earlier that evening in the mirror, adjusting his tie in the quiet of the house. But this… this was different. Maybe it was the lights. Maybe it was the makeup. Or maybe… it was something else entirely.

There was a glow on his face—not artificial, not cosmetic. It was something that came from presence, from confidence, from the strange energy of a man who knew exactly who he was.

Alina stood among the crowd, unmoving. This is the man I live with, she thought. Yet here… he felt like someone else entirely.

The fans screaming his name, the way people leaned forward just to see him, the way cameras chased every movement of his hands… It felt unreal.

He wasn't just handsome. He was handsome like the first drop of rain touching dry earth. He was handsome like the cool scent in the air after a storm. He was handsome like a rainbow appearing quietly after thunder. He was handsome like a flower blooming under the sunlight, effortless and natural. From where she stood, the lights behind him made him look like a star suspended in a dark sky.

She noticed how one cameraman zoomed in close to his face—capturing the slight sparkle in his eyes, the subtle curve of his lips when he spoke, the way his expression softened when he laughed. Either that cameraman is very good at his job, Alina thought faintly, or he fell for Kai, too.

As Kai stepped down from the stage, surrounded by security and event staff, his gaze moved across the crowd out of habit. And then— For a fraction of a second— He thought he saw her in the front row. He didn't stop walking, didn't turn back to confirm. But the thought lingered in his mind like an echo.

Was that… Alina? He frowned slightly, distracted.

Inside the exhibition area, several members of the event team gathered around him, showing different watch collections displayed in transparent glass cases. Tiny lights inside the cases illuminated the watches—and the reflections danced across Kai's face, making his features look even sharper, more defined.

He smiled politely at the people around him. Nodded, Listened and Responded. But something felt off. Alina, watching from a distance, noticed it immediately. The smile he wore now… was different, it was professional, Polished but not real.

Not like the smile she had seen the other evening when he stood alone in front of her door, laughing softly at the wind chimes. That smile had been warm, boyish, unguarded. This one… belonged to Kai Arden, the celebrity. And somewhere behind that polished expression, she felt he was distracted.

Because he was. His mind kept returning to the same thought. Was she really here? She had asked to come with him that night. He had told her she could join the fans. Did she actually come?

He leaned slightly toward Ryan, who stood nearby.

"I think I saw Alina here," Kai said quietly.

Ryan blinked. "Alina? No way. She's not interested in these things."

"I saw her."

Ryan studied his face, then nodded. "I'll check the cameras."  By saying that, he slipped away into the crowd.

Kai moved to a high table and picked up a glass of juice poured into a wine glass. He wasn't really drinking it—just holding it, waiting. The noise around him blurred into the background. Then he saw Ryan returning. And someone was walking beside him. Kai's fingers tightened slightly around the glass. It was definitely her.

From a distance, he saw her clearly now. Alina was wearing a dress that looked as though it had been woven out of moonlight.

The fabric was a soft ivory—neither pure white nor cream, but something warmer, gentler. The bodice was intricately detailed with delicate lace embroidery that traced floral patterns across her torso. The design hugged her waist perfectly, sculpting her silhouette in a way that was elegant rather than bold. A small keyhole opening rested just below her collarbone, subtle and refined, drawing attention to the graceful line of her neck without revealing too much.

The sleeves were what made the dress unforgettable. They flowed wide and airy from her shoulders, draping like soft wings with every movement. The material was light, almost translucent at the edges, catching the evening breeze as she walked. Each step caused the fabric to ripple gently, giving her an almost ethereal presence—as if she weren't walking, but gliding.

Below the fitted lace bodice, the dress fell into a long, pleated skirt that brushed the ground. The pleats moved in soft waves around her legs, creating a quiet rhythm with every step she took. It wasn't flashy. It wasn't loud. But it carried a quiet confidence—a calm, effortless beauty that didn't need attention to command it.

Kai noticed everything. From where he stood, he first saw the outline of her figure in the fading light. His gaze lifted slowly—starting from the hem of the flowing skirt that swayed around her ankles, travelling upward along the gentle folds of fabric. The way the lace clung to her waist made his jaw tighten slightly. Then his eyes moved higher, taking in the delicate detailing near her collarbone, the graceful slope of her shoulders beneath the wide sleeves.

He didn't even realize he had stopped breathing. Alina was walking toward him, completely unaware of the storm she was creating in his chest. She was talking to Ryan beside her, her hands moving slightly as she explained something, her voice calm and focused. A faint smile played on her lips—professional, composed.

Ryan was listening attentively, nodding as she spoke. But Kai wasn't hearing a word. All he could see was the way the evening light kissed the ivory fabric, the way the breeze teased the edges of her sleeves, the quiet confidence in her stride. She looked soft—but not fragile. Graceful—but not weak.

And when she finally lifted her eyes toward him, still mid-conversation, he felt something shift inside him. Because she wasn't just walking toward him. She was unknowingly walking straight into his guarded world—dressed like a dream he hadn't prepared himself to face.

Her hair was loose, falling softly over her shoulders, stirred now and then by the wind. She wasn't wearing heavy makeup—just enough to highlight her natural features. And she was smiling, laughing at something Ryan had said. Kai found himself staring. For a brief moment, the noise, the lights, the event—everything faded. All he could see… was her.
