Chapter 73 - ain 2

The trap had been sprung, casting a shroud of powerlessness over everyone. Their strength was stolen, leaving them vulnerable in the encroaching gloom. Seizing the moment, a band of assassins crept forward, their own powers untouched by the snare. Believing their prey was defenseless, one killer lunged toward the main tent, blade raised for a swift end.

But before his strike could land, the tent's fabric erupted. A shimmering blade, fueled by cold fury, pierced the assassin's chest with the speed of a falling star. The body was hoisted high into the air before being brutally cleaved in two. As the tent shredded apart, the Ice Lord emerged from the wreckage. His eyes burned with a lethal chill.

"Prepare for death, all who dare enter this domain," he growled, his voice cutting through the air like a blizzard. "Even stripped of our heights, you are nothing but insects to us. Come... meet your end!"

The assassins froze. They realized then that a mindless charge would be nothing short of suicide. Recovering their resolve, they ignited their blades with a searing, hellish flame and stormed forward. At that critical heartbeat, the Covenant Beast Mark on the Ice Lord's skin flared with a blinding light. He unleashed a tidal wave of frost that swallowed their flames whole, shattering their momentum. The killers gasped in terror: How could he wield such power when the trap should have rendered him hollow?

The Ice Lord gave them no time for questions. He melted the frost into a mist, and from the haze, Master Lau and Andre launched like thunderbolts. With a single strike that carried the weight of a mountain, Lau sent one assassin hurtling through the air. Simultaneously, Andre lunged at another, burying his steel deep into the killer's heart without a flicker of hesitation.

In the corner of the carnage, Ain knelt beside his wounded mother. His hand pressed firmly against her bleeding wound. He remained silent, but his eyes were a vortex of simmering rage. An assassin approached him, sword leveled at his throat, but suddenly stopped. A paralyzing aura of death emanated from the boy, a chill so profound it stole the killer's breath for a heartbeat. The assassin shook off the dread and swung, but Ain moved like a shadow.

In a blur of motion, Ain severed the man's leg. As the killer toppled, Ain't gaze met his—a look devoid of mercy. With systematic precision, he hacked away the man's limbs. The remaining assassins watched in horror, unable to move as their comrades were harvested in the blink of an eye.

The Bitter Vow

"How did you do it?" Andre asked, breathless. "How did you use your power?"

"The trap binds my own energy," the Ice Lord replied, cleaning his blade, "but the Covenant Beast is beyond such petty magic. Its power is merely dampened, not extinguished. But we have no time. We must save Ain's mother."

"Not before I find out who sent these cowards!" Ain barked. He stood over the limbless survivor. "Speak, before I carve what's left of you into pieces."

The assassin spat blood, a twisted grin on his face. "As if I'd tell a whelp like you..."

Before he could finish, Ain drove his sword into a non-lethal spot, drawing a guttural scream. "I'm not in the mood for talk," Ain hissed. "Who sent you? Was it the Fire Clan?"

The Ice Lord stepped in, placing a hand on Ain's shoulder. "Enough, Ain. Your mother comes first."

"Master Lau will tend to her!" Ain shouted, his voice cracking with grief and fury. "But before she opens her eyes, I want her to see the head of the man who tried to take her life!" He raised his sword for another strike, but the Ice Lord moved faster—his blade swept through the air, decapitating the assassin instantly.

Ain flew into a rage, grabbing the Ice Lord's robes. "Why?! I was going to make him talk!"

"Calm yourself," the Ice Lord said firmly, shaking him off. "I will take my vengeance on the entire clan later."

"Vengeance?" Andre interjected. "You're powerless, Ain! You won't even reach their gates alive."

"I don't care!" Ain screamed. "I will burn them all!"

Master Lau's voice rose above the chaos. "The one who was attacked is the one who decides. She is my lady, and we wait for her word. Until then, recover your strength. Only then can you do as you wish."

The Deal with the Devil

Ain eventually settled, his anger simmering beneath the surface. He and Andre were sent to gather medicinal herbs. Deep in the woods, amidst the shifting shadows, Ain saw a pair of glowing yellow eyes watching him before they vanished. He tried to leave the group under the guise of finding more herbs, but Lau held him back.

Suddenly, a thick, unnatural fog swirled around them. Within the white abyss, a cold hand gripped Ain's shoulder. A voice whispered secrets into his ear, beckoning him. When the fog cleared, Ain was gone.

"Where is he?" Andre demanded.

"The shadows of the Fire Clan," Lau muttered darkly. "I cannot leave her side to follow. You must go."

As Andre and the Ice Lord gave chase, Ain was already deep in the forest, following a mysterious stranger. "You said you could give me my power back," Ain demanded. "How?"

The stranger laughed. "Does revenge drive you so easily? You follow a man you don't even know."

"When you touched me, I felt a spark," Ain said, grabbing the man's collar. "I know you want something from the Fire Clan. Just tell me what it is."

The man smiled, revealing a strange, glowing crystal. "Swallow this. It will return your strength. Go to their clan and turn every inch of it to rubble."

Ain took the crystal and swallowed it without hesitation. A torrential flood of power surged through his veins. "I won't just leave it in rubble," Ain vowed. "I will turn them to ash."

As Ain vanished into the trees, the stranger whispered to the wind: "The mouse enters the trap. But I still need my other pieces. Andre... I see you, though you do not see me. What awaits you is far different from what you seek. And you, Ice Lord... you are the key to everything."

Suddenly, the fabric of reality tore open. A mystical portal erupted in front of Andre and the Ice Lord. It swallowed Andre, casting him into a strange, distant realm—while the Ice Lord was violently spat back out, finding himself standing exactly where he started: Right back in front of the tent.
