When Zev led Lyra into her chamber, Maggie was sitting there, taking in puffs upon puffs of herbal pipes. Lyra could not control the sobs that racked her body. Once Maggie saw them, she rose to her feet and guided Lyra to sit on her bed. She stared at the girl who looked so pitiful and ruined and sighed heavily. She placed Lyra's head on her abdomen and stroked her hair gently.
Maggie already knew what had happened to Lyra. She had overheard some omegas who returned from the scaffold talking about what had taken place. Maggie was an adult woman who had gone through hell in the vampires' den, but even she could never bring herself to watch those brutal executions, much less be asked to serve as an instrument of justice.
