Chapter 162: Two Different Ideologies
Day after day, life became different with Kurtz's awakening and Flamme's presence.
Flamme's talent was indeed astonishing; her understanding and control of magic far surpassed most magic apprentices, and the motivation stemming from hatred made her progress incredibly fast.
One day, Flamme was practicing Serie's newly taught magic alone in the open space outside the small house.
Kurtz stood by the window, watching quietly.
Serie silently walked to his side, her gaze also falling upon that small figure.
"Why?" Serie's voice was soft, breaking the silence between them.
She didn't look at Kurtz, only at Flamme. "Why are you suddenly interested in teaching her with me? This isn't like your usual style."
During these thousands of years, Kurtz and she had seen many beings from the outside world.
To pass the long hours, she would choose to teach magic to some creatures with good magical talent.
Among them, Aura was her most outstanding disciple.
Kurtz, however, had never done such a thing, as if the Godslayer who had spread magical knowledge everywhere a thousand years ago was not the same person as Kurtz a thousand years later.
To this, Kurtz's reply was, "Civilization finds its own way, and so does magic."
He had already given humanity in this world a head start; now it was time for them to develop freely, as that was the true path for magic.
Now, facing Serie's question again, Kurtz did not answer immediately.
He thought to himself:
To be able to teach that legendary human mage, watching her grow step by step, and finally become that "Flamme"? This was simply an unparalleled and wonderful experience.
But of course, he couldn't say that.
"Just passing the time." Kurtz tried to make his tone sound as casual as possible. "Watching her gradually master power is quite interesting. And…" He paused, his gaze falling on Flamme's focused profile. "Her talent is indeed worth nurturing properly."
Serie turned her head, scrutinizing Kurtz, as if trying to dig out something deeper from his calm expression.
She felt that Kurtz's attention to Flamme seemed to be more than just passing the time, but what exactly it was, she couldn't say.
In the end, she merely gave a faint "Hmm," without pressing further.
"Her progress is very fast." Serie's gaze returned to Flamme, with a hint of satisfaction. "That hatred is the best fuel to drive her forward."
Kurtz frowned.
This was precisely what he was worried about.
In the subsequent teaching, Kurtz increasingly clearly felt the unusual nature of Serie's teaching methods.
Serie's core teaching was extremely simple: how to more efficiently kill an opponent.
Whether it was demons or other races, it was all the same.
Most of the magic she taught Flamme was destructive, specifically targeting the opponent's weaknesses.
With every practice, Serie would emphasize the practical application of magic, simulating combat scenarios, and requiring Flamme's spellcasting to carry a clear "killing intent."
This action reminded him of when he first met Serie, and she asked him to use Light Arrow magic, which also had to be done with killing intent.
Serie continuously reinforced the sole goal in Flamme's mind, which was revenge.
Under Serie's guidance, Flamme also became increasingly cold, beginning to be driven by hatred.
Kurtz saw it with his eyes and worried in his heart.
He understood Serie's starting point and the hatred in Flamme's heart.
But he knew even more clearly that being completely driven by hatred was an extremely dangerous path.
The reason why Flamme in history was great was not only because of her powerful strength but also because of her sufficient rationality and, built upon that rationality, her exploration of magical knowledge.
He could not let this original ancient human mage fall.
Thus, Kurtz began his plan.
He did not directly deny Serie's teaching, nor did he question the goal of revenge in front of Flamme. He chose a more circuitous, more subtle approach.
He taught Flamme the magic from the holy scripture.
Sometimes, healing magic was the best antidote to heal a person.
Although Flamme somewhat didn't understand why Teacher Kurtz wanted to teach her this kind of magic that couldn't kill people, she still diligently learned it.
Once, a wounded fawn suddenly stumbled into their view.
Flamme instinctively moved to kill it with the Light Arrow she had just learned, but Kurtz stopped her.
"Wait." Kurtz crouched down, releasing soothing magical power to prevent the fawn from running off. "Try using the healing magic I just taught you. You don't need too much power, just a little."
Flamme was stunned for a moment, a flicker of confusion in her eyes.
Healing?
This seemed to go against the goal Teacher Serie had taught her.
But under Kurtz's persistent gaze, she still hesitantly extended her hand.
When the light representing vitality appeared from her fingertips, covering the fawn's bleeding area, and she watched the wound slowly heal, along with the fawn's gaze gradually becoming docile, a sense of satisfaction surged in Flamme's heart for the first time.
Something shifted inside her—brief, fragile, but undeniably present.
Serie stood not far away, taking all of this in.
She watched Kurtz gently teach Flamme, and watched the momentary confusion in Flamme's eyes.
She did not step forward to stop them, nor did she express any opinion.
Her golden pupils were utterly calm, showing no emotion.
She just quietly observed.
Observing Kurtz cast a few stones named rationality and gentleness into the hatred-filled heart of Flamme, attempting to stir up some different ripples.
She understood Kurtz's intention.
Kurtz was worried that hatred would destroy this child.
But Serie also had her persistence.
It was this deeply ingrained hatred that gave Flamme such astonishing perseverance, allowing her to make rapid progress in such a short time.
And this motivation would lead her to a whole new level, for which all sacrifices were worthwhile.
The differing ideologies between the two quietly clashed within Flamme's small body and mind.
Flamme, caught in the middle, sometimes felt confused.
When she practiced destructive magic, her heart was filled with hatred for demons. The memory of flames and screams drove her forward, sharpened her focus.
But when Kurtz taught her healing magic, and even took her to help a weak creature, a subtle but unsettling happiness would arise in her heart.
She didn't understand why Teacher Kurtz would teach her these things that were useless for revenge.
Didn't revenge only require killing the opponent?
But she trusted both teachers, especially the one who shared a name with the Godslayer she admired.
So, although confused, she still diligently learned everything Kurtz taught.
Serie saw Flamme's confusion and Kurtz's actions.
She did not interfere, but occasionally, when Kurtz taught Flamme magic, she would fix her gaze on the two of them.
As if weighing something, or perhaps just patiently waiting for time to provide the final answer.
