Chapter 155: The Constantly Evolving Demon Race

"You're awake, Kurtz!"

Waking up from a long slumber once more, Kurtz slowly opened his eyes. What greeted him was not the familiar face he expected, but a beautiful elven girl.

Kurtz blinked in confusion, his thoughts seemingly still lingering in the chaos of his long-sleeping soul and body's reconstruction.

It took him a while to realize that the elf before him was not the elven girl he was familiar with, but her apprentice, Ayla.

"Ayla? Why are you here?"

He instinctively searched for her familiar figure, but besides Ayla, the only other presence in the room was Orger, lying quietly by the bed, emitting a soft glow.

Orger was currently maintaining a translucent, pale golden barrier surrounding the entire bed.

"Serie had an urgent matter and had to leave. Before she left, she asked me to guard you and ensure your reconstruction process wasn't disturbed."

"Kurtz, how do you feel? Can you first disarm this barrier? Serie said only you can fully control Orger."

Ayla pointed to Orger, which was continuously casting barrier magic nearby.

Although Serie had left, she had left Orger behind to cast a barrier spell for Kurtz.

In Serie's opinion, there were almost no mages in this world who could break Orger 's barrier, but just in case, she still had her apprentice, Ayla, guard Kurtz.

"What happened?"

Kurtz sensed the state of his new body.

The reincarnation went perfectly, without any issues.

With a subtle thought, he sent an intention to Orger. The next second, the pale golden barrier quickly faded away, allowing Ayla to approach Kurtz.

"I'm fine." Kurtz stood up and stretched his new body. "What happened? Where did Serie go? She rarely leaves during such a critical moment of my reincarnation."

"It's the Demon Race! About a week before you woke up, traces of the Demon Race suddenly appeared in an elven town not far from the forest. They attacked the town, and many people died in it."

"The Demon Race?" Kurtz's brows instantly furrowed.

He hadn't expected that after only about a thousand years, these demons would emerge again.

Like unkillable cockroaches, they had now gathered once more and directly launched an attack on an elven town.

"How many are there? Are there any powerful demons among them?"

"I don't know the actual situation right now," Ayla shook her head. "When the news reached here, Serie was very angry. She immediately decided to take action herself."

Ayla's voice conveyed absolute trust in her teacher's powerful abilities, but a hint of worry was also visible in her eyes. Her teacher had been gone for almost a week, even though that town was only a day's journey from here.

"A week..." Kurtz's heart sank slightly.

With Serie's strength, dealing with ordinary demons shouldn't take much effort.

An entire week without returning meant the situation might be more complex, or rather, more dangerous, than he had expected.

"Tell me the location of that town. I'll go find her!"

"Kurtz! Your body..."

Ayla was a bit concerned. Although Kurtz said he was fine, he had just completed his reincarnation after all.

"Don't worry."

Kurtz picked up his weapons and Averge, ready to set off.

Although the magic power of his new body had not fully recovered, he didn't mind letting those demons experience what a close-range mage was like.

But before he could act, a powerful and familiar magical energy appeared within Kurtz's perception.

As the other party continued to approach, Kurtz and Ayla simultaneously looked towards the door.

The room door was pushed open.

Serie's figure appeared in the doorway.

She was still in her familiar white robe, her delicate face unchanged, only her complexion was a bit paler than usual, seemingly a side effect of excessive magic power use.

Even her breathing was much more rapid than usual; although she tried her best to hide it, it did not escape Kurtz's eyes.

"Serie." Kurtz walked over.

"Serie!" Ayla also immediately stepped forward.

Serie's gaze first fell on Kurtz. Seeing him successfully awakened, her cool eyes were filled with joy.

She nodded slightly to Ayla: "Ayla, you can go back for now."

"Yes!" Ayla looked worriedly at her teacher, then at Kurtz, and finally bowed respectfully before exiting the small house.

After the door closed, Serie fully turned her gaze to Kurtz.

"How do you feel this time?" Her tone sounded no different from usual, as if she had just gone out for a stroll.

Kurtz, however, did not catch her words. He simply came before her, took her small hand, and carefully sensed the magic power within her body.

Serie did not resist at all, simply allowing the man to hold her hand and let his presence probe into her body.

"Such a large loss of magic power?" Kurtz's tone deepened. "What happened? Did you encounter a powerful demon?"

Serie turned slightly, released Kurtz's hand, and walked to the table, taking out a bottle of magic recovery potion.

It was still an incredibly bitter taste, but after so many years, Serie had long grown used to it. Only her furrowed brows remained unchanged.

Only after finishing the potion did she slowly speak: "The demons in the town have all been cleared out. Most of them were not a threat, but—"

Her expression suddenly became serious: "There were a few demons among them that were very special."

"Special?" Kurtz pressed.

"Mm." Serie nodded. "Do you still remember the demon we encountered a thousand years ago who called himself one of the Four Heavenly Kings?"

"The one with petrification magic?"

Kurtz recalled the existence of this demon from the depths of his memory. Although his strength was not great, his magic was very special, as it was able to ignore some of Serie's defensive magic.

"Mm, this time I encountered the same type." Serie paused, seemingly recalling the battle: "Their attacks could bypass my defensive magic."

"You mean completely bypass it?"

"No." Serie shook her head. "It's more like penetration, or perhaps being nullified? It's hard to describe in words."

Serie's tone carried a hint of disbelief, an emotion Kurtz rarely saw in her.

"Kurtz, the Demon Race is evolving! I'm worried..."

She didn't continue, but Kurtz already fully understood her meaning.

Indeed, the magical knowledge of this world was constantly evolving, and the Demon Race naturally wouldn't remain stagnant.

After all, to some extent, the Demon Race was the most gifted race in this world.

This time, Serie encountered demons that could bypass her defensive magic. What about the next battle? Would she encounter demons that could directly pierce through her defensive magic, along with the mage behind it?

Serie seemed to have already imagined their appearance.

Kurtz's expression also darkened.

He walked in front of Serie and asked in a deep voice, "Did you take care of all those demons?"

"Mm! I dealt with them! To make sure, I used the same high-level magic I used against the Goddess back then."
