Chapter 78 - Chapter 78: The Pale Crown's Grin

The moment Flint's arms burst into bright flames, the entire cave lit up like a miniature sunrise. Shadows vanished instantly. Everything that had been hidden in pitch-black darkness revealed itself in a brutal, blinding burst of orange light.

And there they were.

Twenty-three Mole Bears.

All surrounding Kairo and his group.

Their milky eyes squinted and flinched, unable to adapt quickly to the sudden brightness. The beasts hissed and snarled in confusion, stumbling backward, claws scraping loudly against stone.

Theo exhaled a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding. Sweat dripped down his cheek as he grinned.

"Good work, Flint."

Flint laughed—loud, wild, full of adrenaline.

"FINALLY, some damn visibility!"

Without waiting for the others, he rushed straight at the still-dazed Mole Bears. His flaming arm left a blazing streak behind him as he delivered a crushing punch to the nearest beast's face. The Mole Bear flew backward and slammed into a rock with a heavy thud.

Flint roared with excitement, "THIS IS AMAZING! Come on, you damn fur freaks! Let's see who's the boss of this cave now!"

His laughter echoed violently through the cavern.

Kairo watched from behind, his eyes wide but gleaming with the same dangerous thrill.

"Good… this is great," he muttered with a slightly manic grin.

Just behind him, Lilian let out a shaky, awkward smile.

"Okay… so, it wasn't my fire, but it worked out, I guess?"

"It sure did," Kairo said, glancing back at her with genuine gratitude. "Thanks for the help."

Lilian's face instantly turned red.

"Oh–no, no, this was nothing! I-I just— it's nothing at all!" she stuttered as she began nervously laughing, trying very hard not to make eye contact.

The flames reflected in her eyes…

and the battle had only just begun.

Flint didn't wait for the Mole Bears to recover. With fire blazing up his arm and an axe in his other hand, he charged forward like a living torch. Theo followed right beside him, his feet tapping against the stone floor as he activated Dash, his body blurring forward in a burst of speed.

"Rattle of the Deep!" Theo shouted as he slashed through the nearest Mole Bear. His blade carved a clean line across its chest, sparks flying as steel met coarse, stone-like fur.

Another Mole Bear lunged from the side, jaws open. Theo twisted mid-dash, his sword slicing upward and catching the beast under its chin. It stumbled back with a pained growl.

Behind him, Flint slammed into a Mole Bear, fire coating his fist as he delivered a devastating uppercut. The flaming punch landed right beneath the creature's jaw, sending it flipping backward onto the ground.

"GET OVER HERE, YOU OVERGROWN FURBALL!" Flint yelled, swinging his axe to intercept another bear. The metal blade connected with a loud crack, and the beast staggered before collapsing.

The battle became a whirlwind.

Theo spun left, cutting down a Mole Bear trying to flank Flint. Flint, in return, blocked another that was charging toward Theo. Their movements were messy but effective, fueled by adrenaline and the sudden clarity granted by the flames.

Growl. Slash. Burn. Crash.

One after another, Mole Bears fell.

First one.

Then another.

And then another.

By the time the dust settled for even a moment, ten Mole Bears lay defeated on the ground, their bodies scattered across the illuminated cavern floor.

Flint exhaled sharply, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his burning hand—his golden scales reflecting the fiery light.

"We're crushing it!" he barked out, grinning wildly.

Theo nodded, panting heavily yet smiling.

"Yeah… this is just how we do it. Right, Kairo?" he called back.

Kairo stood with Lilian behind him, his eyes scanning the area, Command Nexus flickering faintly in his gaze.

"Don't get sloppy," he warned, though a grin tugged at the corner of his mouth. "Keep your pace and don't get overconfi—"

But before he could finish, a deep, low hum rolled through the cave.

A vibration.

A sound full of weight.

Full of danger.

It came from deeper within the darkness.

And all three of them froze.

The hum echoed again—deeper, heavier—reverberating through the stone walls like the cave itself had begun to breathe. The darkness seemed to thicken, swallowing even the light from Flint's flaming arm. A cold draft rolled out from the depths, brushing past their legs and sending a chill creeping up their spines. Pebbles trembled on the ground, rattling in uneven patterns as though something massive was approaching.

The surviving Mole Bears froze mid-snarl. Their fur bristled upright, every strand standing on edge. One by one, they slowly turned toward the far end of the cavern… and lowered their heads in submission.

Kairo blinked.

"…What? Why are they behaving like this?"

This wasn't fear.

This was obedience.

A sick weight settled in his stomach.

Lilian stepped closer to him, clutching her staff. "This is probably… fine… right?" she asked, though her voice cracked halfway through.

Theo didn't even bother pretending. He wiped his blade on his sleeve and forced a grin.

"Nope. Not fine. This—" he jabbed his thumb toward the darkness, "—is never fine."

Something shifted at the back of the cave.

A massive shape.

A slow, deliberate movement.

The sound of claws scraping stone.

And then, from the abyssal shadows… something began to rise.

A massive shadow shifted in the dark—thick, heavy, its claws dragging across stone with a slow, grinding scrape that vibrated through the cave floor. One of the Mole Bears immediately scrambled aside, whimpering as a colossal figure pushed forward from the depths.

Kairo's stomach dropped.

Flint's flames flickered as he narrowed his eyes.

Theo tightened his grip on his sword until his knuckles whitened.

Lilian stuttered, "I-It… it can't be one of them, right…?"

Then they saw it.

The creature rose—slowly, deliberately—standing on two legs. It towered over the other Mole Bears, dwarfing them like children. The lesser beasts backed away in fear, some even fleeing into side tunnels.

Its frame was monstrous, built like a walking boulder wrapped in thick, coarse fur so dark it was nearly black. Its head hung low at first, shrouded completely in shadow.

Then it stepped forward.

The flames lit its face, and everyone froze.

Its head was pitch black, unnaturally so—like a slab of midnight carved into the shape of a beast. A long pale scar ran from its eye down to its jaw, splitting the darkness like a ghostly mark.

It inhaled sharply.

Then exhaled.

A blast of cold, frost-tinged air rolled across the cave floor—like the breath of death itself.

The surviving Mole Bears crawled back instantly, whimpering, flattening themselves to the stone as the larger monster's presence swallowed the cave like a suffocating shadow. They didn't dare look at it. They didn't dare breathe loudly.

But Flint?

Flint only burned brighter.

"Oh hell yeah," he grinned, flames roaring up his arm. "If this thing wants a fight—IT'LL GET A DAMN FIGHT!"

"Wait—Flint, NO!" Kairo shouted, eyes widening.

Too late.

Flint charged forward with reckless joy, claws scraping against the stone as he sprinted toward the colossal silhouette standing above the ledge. The monster shifted, preparing itself, its cold breath misting through the cave.

Kairo's panic spiked. He snapped open the Command Nexus, screens of light spiraling around him.

"What is that thing…? Come on, come on—show me—"

The words began forming.

Kairo froze.

His face drained of color.

"Flint—STOP! That's not a normal mons—"

But Flint was already airborne, flames exploding across his arm.

"TAKE THIS!"

He swung down.

The monster didn't dodge.

It didn't flinch.

It simply raised its massive paw and swatted Flint out of the air like a bug.

BOOM—!

Flint slammed into the cave wall, dust and rocks showering everywhere.

"FLINT!" Lilian screamed.

"You idiot!!" Theo shouted, rushing forward.

Flint groaned, pushing himself up on shaky legs. "Ow… okay… maybe… it's a little strong…"

The enormous creature stepped forward. Its shadow completely engulfed him, swallowing his figure in darkness. Its pale, corpse-like face leaned close, red eyes narrowing with cruel intelligence.

Kairo's Command Nexus glowed violently.

The name finally appeared:

[Pale Crown Mole Bear — Tier 4]

Royal class of Mole Bears. Extremely aggressive and sadistic. Known to torture prey for amusement.

Kairo gulped hard.

"Sadistic…? Oh god… we're screwed."

The Pale Crown's lip curled upward.

Then, in the flickering firelight, it formed a jagged, monstrous grin—

and released a low, guttural laughter that shook the entire cave.
