Chapter 53 - A Final Farewell

The landing was not smooth, in fact it would be better to describe the landing as extremely rough. It all went wrong when on her decent she misjudged her wingspan and managed to clip her wing on the top of one of the trees, this caused her to spin off course. Luna was clung to her neck like a koala refusing to let go and screaming the entire time. They impacted the ground with a echoing boom!

So now here they sat some time later with Luna tending a fire and slowly cooking up some of the fire drake they killed whilst Violet nursed her injuries, either from the impact with the teee or the ground she had managed to badly injure her wing, thankfully she didn't quite brake it but it was a close thing. She was also in a sullen mood thanks to the telling off she had received from Luna after they recovered from the crash.

It was a quite night with Violet making up for her transgression by acting as Luna's pillow and blanket all in one. This did make it hard for Luna to stay mad at her companion as the gesture was appreciated especially as she could feel the occasional twinge of pain that Violet felt from her extended wing through their bond. But knowing that her companion also felt a strong sense of pride and happiness at being able to provide for her in this way allowed any lingering harsh thoughts to wash away with the night.

Come morning Violet's wing was still feeling quite tender so they opted to walk, thankfully they had made great progress whilst flying the last day so they managed to arrive at the lake in the late afternoon. From there is was a simple process of walking around it till they reached the makeshift dock and headed back into the trees till they came across the burnt out remains of Luna's clan.

Nature was already in the process of reclaiming this are and vines along with small shrubs were already growing over the remains of the buildings.

Luna made her way into the center of the clearing and knelt down with her head bowed. Violet silently walked up next to her and laid down whilst resting her head against her companions side. "We should make or leave something here to remember them by." Violet softly suggested.

Feeling that she liked the idea she wondered if she could do something with her ice. So she began to form a block of ice she decided on keeping the monument simple. A small obelisk around 1 meter tall which was imbedded in the ground. She focused her Arctic ice focusing on how she wanted this to stay forever in place and to never melt. She felt her mana drain at a prodigious rate as she worked her literal magic. When she was nearly out and still needed more she began to panic slightly.

She was unable to stop the drain no matter how much she tried to halt the seemingly endless flow of mana. In desperation she flailed about trying to draw additional mana into herself regardless of where said mana was coming from.

Violet felt a strange tugging at the edge of her senses, and she noticed that she was beginning to loose her mana, at first it started off slow but the pace rapidly increased. She first felt a wave of surprise and then momentarily panic, but that all faded away when she realised where the mana was going. She watched in fascination as her void mana flowed through their bond and was eagerly sucked into Luna's creation. The previous monument of crystal clear blue ice took on a violet tint with veins of pure nothingness forming into the shape of snowflakes.

The process only took a minute but when it was finished both girls were quite low on mana, luna looked up to gaze at her creation in wonder as she observed the monument to her people in silence.

The two stayed like that for some time just silently observing the pillar of eternal ice. Luna ran through her memories of everyone she had lost but focused on the happy memories. Violet stayed with her providing what support she could to her companion in her time of need.

"I will miss you all, but know that I have taken vengeance on our foes and I will continue to live as you all would want me to… goodbye everyone." Luna's voice broke slightly at the end an a singular tear fell from her eye only to be brushed aside when a certain dragon gently licked her cheek.

Laughing at being licked Luna stood up and smiled faintly giving one last look at the monument along with her old home before decisively turning around and walking away, her trusty dragon companion following along behind her.

They walked in companionable silence for some time before Violet spoke. "I'm sure they would be proud of you, you have become a fierce warrior and a great companion."

"Thanks Violet, I appreciate that." Saying so she leant over and gave the dragon a tight hug to show her appreciation.

The two continued on in their journey and as the sun was beginning to set they finally arrived at the base of the lone mountain and Violet's first ever home. They steadily made their way up the short slope that lead to the cave that she came from. Entering it both of them were happy to note that no stray beasts had claimed this spot for themselves.

It remained as they had left it, a pool of crystal clear water lay to one side whilst a indentation in the ground in the middle was the spot upon which Violet's egg had laid for who knows how long. Violet sniffed the air feeling a sense of comfort from the all too familiar scents that permeated this space.

Together the two girls went about setting up camp, Luna laying down the furs and creating a small fire whilst Violet went about butchering the meat. Together they had a quiet meal as they both reminisced on times now passed and memories they would never forget.
