Chapter 30 - The Conductor’s Reckoning

The door opened into a vast chamber. Darkness clung to every corner, but the center was dominated by the Conductor's throne—a towering mass of black metal, flesh, and writhing shadows. Chains of fire and blood coiled around it, pulsing like a living heart.

The Conductor stood atop it, eyes blazing molten white. "Welcome… survivors. Or what remains of you," he hissed, his voice echoing in their skulls. "You've endured skin, blood, rot, dolls, flames, shadows… but now, the final test begins."

From the walls, the horrors of every carriage surged forward:

Skinned horrors clawed and reached.

Flooded corpses surged like waves.

Maggots and rot spread across the floor, wriggling into their boots.

Doll doubles mimicked every fearful motion.

Shadows reached inside their minds, twisting memories and desires.

Evelyn's lantern trembled in her hands, the light barely containing the onslaught. Her friends were bleeding, trembling, barely able to stand.

"Remember," she gasped, forcing herself forward, "the light… the light is all we have!"

The Conductor laughed, a sound like cracking fire and twisting metal. He raised a hand, and the chamber exploded into flames, shadows, and writhing flesh. Each scream from the horrors fed him, each flicker of fear fueling his power.

Sophie cried out as her doll double lunged, slicing her cheek with porcelain nails. Alex struggled against skinned horrors trying to drag him under. Leo's shadow pressed into his mind, forcing flashes of guilt and regret until his knees buckled.

Evelyn gritted her teeth. She slammed the lantern onto the floor. Light exploded, cutting a path through the chaos. She grabbed Sophie's arm, then Alex and Leo, dragging them forward.

The Conductor roared, flames and shadows tearing at them. "You… think… you can defy me?"

Evelyn screamed, pouring every ounce of will into the lantern. The light flared white-hot, burning through flesh, blood, rot, dolls, and shadows alike. The Conductor shrieked, writhing in pain as the combined light seared his form.

Step by step, they advanced. The horrors collapsed, shrieking, melting into ash, smoke, and blood.

Finally, Evelyn reached the base of the throne. She slammed the lantern down, channeling all her anger, fear, and hope. The Conductor let out a final scream, a sound that tore through the carriage itself. His body exploded into molten shadow, burning and dissolving into nothing.

Silence.

The carriage was empty. Smoke curled lazily in the corners. The lantern's glow faded, leaving them bruised, bleeding, shaken—but alive.

Sophie whispered, voice trembling, "Is… is it over?"

Evelyn held the cracked lantern, staring at the remnants of the throne. "For now… but this train… it never truly ends. It waits. Always."

A final whisper drifted through the carriage, almost tender, almost amused:"Until next time…"

The survivors collapsed, exhausted, broken—but still human.
