The abbess of Prajna Temple, Master Leichen, however, looked calm, as if she had long since seen through life and death, still silently chanting sutras and worshiping Buddha.

On Master Leichen's knees sat a pitch‑black baby, looking just over a year old. He was very ugly, even somewhat frightening, yet he could speak, and his words were astonishing.
