When Xi Lin received the MMS, her entire being felt uneasy.
Xi Lin came from a remote mountain village, where poverty and backwardness persisted. She attended school until the fourth grade, but then her family couldn't afford to send her any longer.
She helped with farm work and house chores until she turned sixteen, when her family wanted her to marry. However, she didn't want to end up like her good sister next door, married to an old man, stuck at home, having children, cooking, being constantly busy, and getting beaten by her husband. She really didn't want to live that kind of life.
But soon, her family found her a man, a middle-aged man whose wife had died and who wanted to remarry.
That man was tall, burly, and had a ferocious face. Xi Lin was somewhat frightened at the time.
When her good sister got beaten by her husband, she felt scared just looking at those wounds. How could she endure if she were to be beaten herself?
