Chapter 17 – Frosted Thrones and Shared Fronts

The citadel of Glaciem Vale hummed like a living glacier, its spires drinking energy from geothermal cores buried beneath the ice. Within the Hall of Frosted Crowns, nobles of the Tailborn Dominion gathered in crescent formation. Above the central dais, holograms of rift activity shimmered like constellations projected on frozen glass.

At the head sat King Iskandar Veyr, mantle heavy with synth-fur, his crown woven with crystalline ice resonating faintly with stored Origin energy. His eyes, pale as glaciers, surveyed his council.

The Rift Debate

Lord Syven spoke first, cybernetic monocle flickering.

"The humans move swiftly. Aldrich's council approved a bold measure: dungeon-type rifts will be trial zones for their Academy and Rift-Hunters. Their youth will be forged there—or broken."

Whispers filled the hall.

Duchess Avelyne leaned forward, her voice calm, edged like frost.

"It is reckless… and ingenious. A crucible disguised as curriculum. Failures are weeded out. Survivors emerge with scars and strength. They mean to train not just soldiers, but sovereigns."

A murmur of agreement followed.

"But the cost," another noble objected. "Dungeon rifts devour indiscriminately. If their Academy falters, the humans may destabilize entire sectors. Why risk such loss?"

Eryndor, the archivist, tapped his staff. Holograms shifted, displaying dungeon rift schematics.

"Because dungeon-types differ from breaches. They evolve. They grow. If left alone, they consume. If harnessed, they may yield resources, technology, knowledge. Aldrich understands: control begins with exposure."

Beyond Awakening

Eryndor's voice deepened as he projected cellular structures magnified to luminous clusters.

"You still speak as though Awakening were the end. It is not. After Awakening lies Integration—where talent rewrites the body, down to cells and veins. Biology is no longer biology. It becomes resonance."

The projection shifted—cells humming with miniature wormhole-like cores, or crystallized energy webs.

"And some whisper of Transcendence, where existence itself bends. Few survive. Fewer still wield it. Aldrich is said to be close to that precipice."

Uneasy silence filled the hall.

The Kings' Powers

Iskandar rose, his presence silencing all. He lifted one hand.

The air bent. A drone in mid-flight froze. Its wings stopped. Light around it slowed, photons dragging like reluctant rivers. Nobles gasped, clutching at their augmentations as kinetic implants stuttered to stillness.

"This," Iskandar said quietly, "is Absolute Stasis. Momentum. Energy. Vibration. All yield when I command silence."

The stasis shattered. Reality rushed back. The nobles breathed as though surfacing from icy water.

Lord Syven swallowed.

"Majesty… with such might, why do we not claim the dungeons first?"

Iskandar's gaze swept the chamber.

"Because strength without caution is suicide. My stasis halts what is. But Aldrich bends what was and will be. I freeze existence; he rewrites causality. Do you see? Our powers are not weapons against each other. They are anchors holding civilization against collapse."

Duchess Avelyne murmured,

"And the Grayscale Sovereignty? Their monarch?"

Eryndor's eyes flickered.

"They say his talent maps probability itself. Every battle, every rift, every anomaly is laid before him as equations. Against such sight, even time and stasis may falter."

The hall fell into deep silence. The balance of civilization was fragile—and each dominion knew it.

Toward a Shared System

Finally, Iskandar raised his hand.

"The dungeon system proposed by Aldrich will not remain human alone. Rift-Hunters, Academies, Dominion youth—all will be tested. Dungeon expeditions will serve as trial and training alike. Rewards will be standardized. Failures will not be discarded; they will be lessons etched into policy."

Lord Syven frowned.

"And what of the Vart resources inside dungeons? That will stir conflict—"

"Resources are the root of survival," Iskandar interrupted. "But they will be shared. Supervised. Counted. We fight not each other. We fight entropy itself. Rift phenomena care little for borders."

The nobles bowed their heads.

Iskandar's final words lingered, cold and resolute:

"If humanity sharpens its blades in the dungeon, we will sharpen ours as well. Not for conquest, but for survival. Let the rifts learn—civilization endures."
